This really is an incredible game, or rather, it was on the XBOX. This PC port was bad upon release, and has gotten unplayable over the years. The controls cannot be mapped to play with the controllers it were designed for, the game is buggy and arbitrarily crashes, and the graphical glitches are like a bad joke (Eyeballs popping up far away from the characters, tearing when moving about, colors all over the place) on all three computers I tried it on.
Beyond good & evil demo was the first game i played on my ps2, back then i was really surprise by it's graphics, atmosphere, enviroment and photography, the game looked like a playable playstation 1 cutscene but sadly i never got to play the full version.
Found out that most people call it an underrated gem, so i was happy to buy it.
PLOT
So the game starts and you play as "jade" a woman who fights aliens with a stick to protect the orphans, after you beat the aliens "Alpha Section" arrive, a mercenary group who is responsible to protect people from aliens and claim that they counter the alien attack.
As you progress you will work as a secret agent and your job is to uncover the truth behind Alpha Section and the alien attacks by taking a photo of every evidence.
GAMEPLAY
Combat
On starting the game you will notice how basic the combat system is and how bad the targeting system is.
Photography
gets boring quickly, you just have to take a basic photo of every different species you see, for example you can take a photo of pigman's ass and you get rewarded with money.
Also the evidence are very specific, you can't find any bonus hidden evidence only the necessary you need to progress.
Stealth
stealth do not work so well because the camera sabotage you most of the time,
camera sometimes is fixed in a very bad angle and also change jerkly, imagine tring to backstab someone and have the camera changed in the last seconds. In the end stealth part felt very basic for me.
Minigames
The game has some fun racing minigames but nothing special really.
Exploration
You can explore the world map with a hoverboat but it's way too small to feel like an explorer, you will mostly visit the city and shop.
CHARACTERS
Most characters have none existent character development like Hahn,Mei,Nino,Peepers,Jade they just try to look cool without saying anything intersting,
So with Basic combat, basic photography, basic stealth, i think the game is average and just overatted.
Camera - is your enemy. It uses advanced AI techniques to select angle where don't see a thing you really need. You are stealth - camera looks right at you not enemy. You try to use gyrodisk and camera look in opposite direction requiring a lot of time to position right. Also meaning of movement direction changing with changing camera angle. Sometimes camera could be controlled with mouth, sometimes mouse control direction too.
Control could be and should be remapped in SettingsApplication, coming along the game. Main problem is a lag in response, you couldn't just stop your combo against thin air to switch attack or sometimes Space/Shift acts like toggle and other like switch.
Game mechanics are carefully underthought. You doesn't get enough feeling on how to use them and you right at the final boss and... It hurts.
Unskipable cutscenes you forced to watch time after time while proceeding with quest adds pain too.
All these while story is ok (could be better, much better) and graphics is good enough.
I'm sorry, I'm yet another person who never played this game back in the day. Playing it now (2025) it still stands up and is thoroughly enjoyable. Heard some negative things about the remastered version so decided to play the original. It was amazing AFTER some tweaking. I found capping my monitor fps at 60 (otherwise cutscenes are messed up) + XPadder (for controller support) + DxWnd (for forcing a smaller windowed screen) + increasing FOV in bge.ini to be crucial. With all of these working, it was a dream. But it was very finicky to get them all (especially DxWnd) initially working so caveat emptor. This is a console-style low-FOV game at its core that is clearly meant to be played on a TV. That was never adjusted as part of the PC port. But if you don't have motion sickness or are playing on a TV you may not need all these tweaks.
I'll preface my review with some perspective: my partner recommended this game to me. It's the first time I've played it, and therefore I do not have the same nostalgic connection that some other players seem to have - which is not inherently a bad thing.
BG&E had a lot of potential as a game. You can feel the hard work that was put into it right from the first cutscene. However, BG&E is one of those games with a strong start that fizzles out near the end.
When we meet Jade, everything goes smooth. In a couple of minutes we learn that she's skilled, honest, brave, and empathetic. It's clear from the dialogue that she cares a lot about the children she's guarding - and all interactions with her partner show how much they care and trust one another. In short, we get to know Jade as a character early on, in ways that are natural to the player.
We do not get to know anyone else, which is a bummer to be honest.
One of the strongest aspects of BG&E is its atmosphere. The planet, Hillys, is inhabited by anthropomorphic animals who co-exist with humans. We are not told why and how they're there, they simply are. This makes the game different from many other sci-fi and fantasy titles that focus an awful lot on the surface-level of their world.
Which is what brings me back to my previous point: not getting to know the characters. We don't get to know Jade's acquaintances in the Pedestrian District, and worse, we don't get to know the members of IRIS, or even our second companion who we spend 70% of the game with.
When we reach the ending, one wonders: "how did we even get here?" From the meeting with IRIS and onward, the plot speeds up to such an extend that a lot of potential character growth is lost, especially by the ending, which felt very rushed and underwhelming.
However, this game is still worth playing. For the world, characters, the AMAZING ost, and overall adventurous feel. I would have loved this game as a kid, and that's enough reason for me to play.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
