Beyond Good & Evil

Famous for underperforming on release, Beyond Good & Evil is one of Ubisoft's great cult classics. Set on the idyllic world of Hillys, we play as Jade, a photographer who finds herself wrapped up in a shadowy conspiracy as a cell of rebel journalists hires to sneak into the bases of the local military authority, the Alpha Sections, and uncover whatever links them to an invading alien race known as the DomZ. Part stealth, part action, part photography-simulator and part hovercraft driving, the game juggles a lot of hats at once, making it an ambitious title for the early 2000s, and this does mean it doesn't do anything brilliantly, but the powerful atmosphere and shining creativity on display carries Beyond Good & Evil in a beautiful way.

A fun openworld RPG/metroidvania with stealth & racing elements about taking pictures of wildlife & uncovering conspiracies in a 1984 regime. One of my favorite things about this game is the artstyle & setting itself & how it mix different visual themes. I can't put it into words. It feels sci fi while also feeling fantasical, nostalgic and vintage. As if someone dropped Star Wars into The Elder Scolls. Reminds me of the movie Treasure Planet when you add aliens & sci fi tech to a world stuck in the 1600:s It shouln't work as well as it does. I also like the real life inspirations even if it might be a bit stereotypical at times. You can interact with almost every alien you encounter, play mini games, explore, sneak and snap pictures of wildlife for money though i feel like there isnt a realistic balance between quantity & reward as you get paid massive sums snapping creatures you'll find almost instantly while other rarer creatures grant almost nothing. You can partake in races though its odd that not only are everyone fine with it, but you're the only one to shoot down your opponents (which is more or less required in the later races). You can also run into looters or be chased by the cops if not careful which feels a bit out of character for our kind hearted heroine, though it does add to the world building, realism & sense of consequence. Sadly the game kinda gets worse towards the end, probably due to time constraints and ends on a cliffhanger. Though the first 2/3:rds of the game is nothing short of a masterpiece. The real tragedy is that we may not ever see Jade get the depth she deserves as the No Man's Sky wannabe of a sequel (whenever it does come out) seems to dump her in favor of someone else. From what i seen of the trailer, the sequel seem to have drowned in ambition & forgotten the simplicity that gave the old game its magic. This is not a massive world like Skyrim or GTA but i think thats its strength. It makes it feel more at home & personal.

Epic title, sloppy port.

I have to say that Beyond Good & Evil is one of my favorite games of all time. It's got a strange yet beautiful world, a stunning, strong-willed protagonist and fantastic gameplay that blends stealth, combat and photography (!). As green-lipstick-wearing Jade you get to investigate a strange conspiracy on the planet Hillys. People are being abudcted by an alien force known as the DomZ. The Alpha Sections claim to have come to protect Hillys but there's something strange about them - there's clearly more going on than meets the eye. So Jade joins up with a group called IRIS to investigate the mystery and uncover the truth behind the kidnappings. As I said earlier, BG&E blends together a nice variety of gameplay styles and it actually manages to do everything quite well. What's upsetting about this is that the port to PC is a complete mess. If you can find this for a console you own, get it there. The PC version has numerous issues that may or may not crop up for you including poor sound quality, no controller suppourt and not even launching at all. If you want to brave these issues and try to make it work then you may be up for a fight. If you DO get it to work, however, this is a game you'll never forget. Overall, Beyond Good & Evil is a five-out-of-five game.. but due to the horrendous port of this title I have to give the PC version a two. Beware.

Underrated

Try this game. It's in many aspects like zelda, but with more mature themes. Love the soundtrack and the gameplay.
