Great concept, middling execution, 3.5*

I love the ideas of this game. I've always wanted a starship captain simulator, and this is the best one I've played so far, even in its development state. You have meaningful decisions to make, nice role-playing, a crew to manage, and some fairly fun, punchy ship combat. However, there are some design decisions that make no sense. Pros: Its the only real starship captain simulator on the market. The game-play is fun, and there is plenty to do. The main story is interesting, and there are choices that affect how it progresses. The graphics in the main view are nice and combat feels solid and weighty. Cons: There are several odd quirks that make no sense. You will receive negative "perks" for your captain through literally no fault of your own when a randomized game event will come up out of nowhere that forces you to choose one of two bad choices that nerf your captain. This is incredibly annoying and makes no sense whatsoever. THESE ARE PERMANENT and start to ruin the fun of the game very quickly, especially since most of them are negative. There should be more classes of ships. You have cruisers and... maybe a battleship or two. There should be corvettes, frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, etc. You get constantly dropped out of warp to be attacked, and there is no radar or way to avoid them. Some of the ship designs are directly lifted from other games, as if they used the actual game assets (rebel galaxy and star point Gemini). The menus look like something from the 90's, and there are many unprofessional grammatical errors, Finally, you can't repair your own ship, instead you must go to an allied space station. which are super tedious to dock with after you've done it 20 times (DESPERATELY needs auto-dock). In closing, I've listed a lot of issues that will hopefully be remedied in the final version. The game has a lot of potential, which I hope they don't squander.

Really fun game

This is almost like playing Rebel Galaxy, but you get to go up and down and roll, but still in big ships like Rebel Galaxy. If you liked/loved Rebel Galaxy chances are you'll like/love this game. It is a really fun game and worth the asking price.

It is okay

I have waited 5 years to get the game finished, so I review again and also my review. ; ) First of all, you need to set the correct mindset for this game. This game is not a simulator or arcade space shooter, this is an interactive book. You shoot between dialogs. Good: - Nice ships. - Good story. (but your character's "development" is peaking at the end...) Netural: - No effective weapon range indicator. - No target lock. - The sometime real time enginering, recycling, medbay and research. - Camera change options just meh. - Voice acting is not the best but okay. - Sound. It's just meh... - No auto turrets. - You use rockets, projectile weapons until you try laser. - Secondary equipments (blue) are useless except 2, the shield recharge dome and weapon cooldown. - Music is okay. - Dice rolling became frustrating real soon. Good thing it can be turned off. Bad: - AI. Friendly and enemy ships are just fly, shoot like there's no tomorrow. - Camera. If something flies between your ship and the camera, you automatically target and shoot that object. Regardless if it's friend or foe. - Sometimes the lights are too bright. You must stare your ship from behind, that's constant bright, and some laser show during fights. Doesn't help that you can adjust the brightness of the engies. After these it's hard to see dark objects and ships. - Constant progress breaking bugs. You need to reload game or when there is dialog, don't bring up the inventory to do something productive. - Plot shielded enemies are just annoying. You shoot it, but don't know who it is and its life stops at 15% and don't go any lower when you finally relize that you can't kill it, you must destroly everybody else first. Overall, I'm not really angry, it was a good shooting, I have skipped most of the text, I'm not the reading type of guy and hardly think I ever play it again. If you like reading and fan of space operas, take it. Use the lowest difficulty and you will have a good time.

Been waiting a long time for this...

Back in 2001 on a crappy laptop with an 8mb integrated gpu, I found myself going through some demo CDs and came across a demo called Noble Armada. I lost days to this space sim/RPG based upon the tabletop game of the same name set in the Fading Suns universe. Unfortunately that game never made it to full release and I was never able to find any other game comparable, until now. While not entirely identical to the aforementioned game (lacks goods trading, boarding ability to take over ships and add to fleet) Between the Stars is still a damn fun time with great storytelling, fun ship combat and very interesting ground combat and skill check mechanics that show roots to a DnD-esque ruleset. Other people are drawing comparisons to Rebel Galaxy...yeah, kinda. Aside from the heavier RPG elements, Rebel Galaxy ship combat is more like Assassin's Creed Black Flag whereas this is more like Star Trek Online, only with free aim Awesome game, can't wait to see how it develops

The thing i've been waitig for

This is exaclty what i wanted from a space rpg. No more these build your own story nonsense... dont get me wrong i love Elite Dangerous but i love this more since here i have a purpose i can roleplay. also capital ships feel like capital (tough they could be a bit less manuvarable for my taste but maybe the later ships are bigger and handle heavier). so far a fun game.
