Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

Rather dated graphics and character movement, but a good story with a poignant ending. I loved the character of Foster (aka Bob) with his dry humour and acerbic wit: aided in this by quirky Joey. As a downunder type, I would have liked the game even more had Bob and Joey had Aussie accents (It was set in Oz afterall) A great feature with the F5 key, was control over music volume, as the music drove me nuts and I could kill the sound. Also, I have to confess to having to slow the game down for the puzzle where one has to get back before the eye wakes up (my hand-eye coord is not what it once was). Bob learns about his Outback origins and for me makes the right choice at the end going back there.

I'm not a huge point-and-click fan, but when I got this free from GOG when I signed up, I decided to give it a try. The result was an entertaining few hours, as I worked my way downwards to figure out the evil power that controlled the city. I appreciated that most of the puzzles were straight-forward, although not all the mechanics are obvious (the ability to combine items to create a new item took me quite a while to figure out), but overall it was enjoyable figuring out how to proceed to the next step. As for the storyline, it's simple, but makes great use of the characters; your robot pal Joey is definitely a delight, as is his blatant Doctor Who joke that comes out of nowhere partway through the story. All in all, a good way to spend an afternoon (and part of the evening), especially if you are a fan of sci-fi storylines.

I liked the title and though it would be ok. It turned out to be a pleasure to play and non stop enjoyable. The graphics are really super nice and the characters are quite funny. I didn't want the game to end.

This game is unrelentingly hard to figure out, but the visual design is fantastic. Beneath a Steel Sky delivers awesome interior and exterior design with a good storyline and some cool concepts.

Works on most windows. Old school lateral thinking puzzler with rich graphics, humorous/ironic touches and subtle hints from the characters themselves. Make sure you save often and examine EVERYTHING.
