Battle Brothers is a turn based tactical RPG which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory?
The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.
Manage a medieval mercenary company in a procedurally generated open world.
Fight complex turn-based tactical battles with historical equipment and brutal injuries.
Permadeath. All characters that die in combat will stay dead – unless they return as the undead.
All characters come with their own background stories and traits. Want a stuttering ratcatcher, a greedy witch hunter or a drunkard disowned noble?
Character development without a restrictive class-system. Each character gains experience through combat, can level up and acquire powerful perks.
Equipment that matters. Different weapons grant unique skills – split shields with axes, stun enemies with maces, form a spearwall with spears or crush armor with a warhammer.
Diverse enemy roster. All enemies have unique equipment, skills and AI behavior.
A dynamic event system with atmospheric encounters and tough decisions outside of combat.
Three late game crises – a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge – add a looming threat.
Two full hours of orchestral soundtrack.
Overhype Studios is an independent game developer studio from Hamburg, Germany. We are devoted to making great games that we want to play ourselves. With Battle Brothers we thrive to reflect the creativity, complexity and originality from the old days when game developers where passionate gamers, not corporate businessmen. While doing this we took a lot of inspiration from some of best games out there: The original X-Com, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mount & Blade and Jagged Alliance.

Battle Brothers is probably the game I've spent most time playing in the last five years. I've gone back into it at each new DLC, and I'm not even that good. It can be crude and unforgiving but you can also lower the difficulty level. It's a simple premise but the way randomised (minor and major) events and interactions between party members are built, it's always entertaining. Deceivingly simply but very solid combat mechanics. If there's one thing I want from a game like this, it's a huge variety of weapons and equipment and BB fully delivers. It would be great to get even more perks (and further character specialisations to unlock at higher levels) to keep the game fresh in the late game. Great job for such a small team
Something that other reviewers have not mentioned:
This game has the meatiest, most satisfying melee sound effects I have ever heard.
THWACK bludgeon vs brigand face
SSSSSNICK dagger finds a weak spot
SLASSHHHH sword swings and misses
OOHRGGLLGAAARGHH opponent bleeds out and dies
Seriously, the audio experience brings this to glorious life. Play it with the sound turned up.
I don't need to praise the game otherwise, those who appreciate turn-based tactics have already bought this at least twice. It is that good.
This game is a piece of art from various aspects. It's the kind of game for that kind of person looking for a real challenge (Like myself)
The gameplay is great. It's unforgiving and very realistic, you will have to think and play it once and again until you get to know how is the best way to avoid the deaths of your mercenaries. (The Ironman Mode is the best way to play this)
The artwork has a lot of love put into it, it makes you feel like you are a part of this harsh world.
The mechanics are easy to learn but hard to master. Your team and your tactics are 100% customizable, so it's up to you to make your mercenary team succed in every encounter with minimal casualties. BTW, casualties are very hard to overcome, meaning that you will have to recruit another mercenary and equip them and train them from scratch. Sometimes that can be a real drawback, but that will only make you more careful next time.
It doesn't need any more updates (like some people say).
It's a perfect, bugless, finished game. Coming from indie developers, I would only ask for another great game such as this one!
Thank you Overhype Studios! I'm looking forward your next release!
One of the best mercenary games out there - right next to the Jagged Alliance and XCOM series. Awesome to see the devs are continuing development with the excellent (free) Lindwurm update, which came as a surprise as the team had said they were finished with the game. Now, we have the new Beasts & Exploration DLC on its way, and I'm seriously frothing to fight some giant ice Unholds and those cranky witches.
P.s. Actually bought 5 times - on Steam for myself, my brother, and two mates, and just decided DRM free would be nice and wanted to show the devs some love, so just got it on here too. Keep up the great work Overhype! You've got a legend in the making, and we humble gamers certainly appreciate it.
The game is amazing. I really enjoy how you make your own stories, and how you can have some battle encouters that you'll never forget. I never expeded that kind of impact on the imagination by just looking at the simple graphics. But it achieves that by having in depth mechanics, great flavour text, unique characters and high stakes battles. I remember very well my first fight with alps, running naked in the night. A few overwhelming fights, won agains all odds vs zombies, and how a bandid leader killed with a axe swing 3 of my guys ... :D I have been playing this game on off for a few years now, and it has the same effect each time I pick it up again. I am coming back now for the Desert DLC :)
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
