Very impressive so far

This review is based off patch 3 of early access. BG3 already has solved one of my greatest hates in modern CRPGs: item levels. I love that it doesn't matter if I'm level 1 or level 20 (well, 4 in EA): a sword is still a sword. It's my character itself who is amazing, NOT the shiny objects they're wearing. I get driven insane by the whole "this is a level 1 sword, it does 1-3 damage; this is a level 5 sword, it does 30-40 damage". A game forcing you to constantly upgrade weapons through a pointless treadmill is NOT fun. It's just tedious and boring, and removes the significance of when you get a magic item (eg. you find a legendary suit of armour, worn by a great tyrant who terrorised the world... Oh, sorry, it's level 5, you're level 10 now, here's a random common item that's now three times better...). I am so incredibly grateful to Larian for loyally implementing 5e's itemization where the power of the character is based off their own skills and abilities, not their gear. Thank you! I am also absolutely loving the story and characters. The companions are all compelling and I'm really enjoying the narrative - looking forward to seeing where it goes. I love that the game encourages you to actually consider the fact that you're all strangers drawn together by circumstance and that there's no reason for any of you to trust each other. The trust must be built over time. On the negative side, I would really like to see some of the D&D 5e rules followed closer. I think disengage should be a full action, not a bonus action, as it diminishes the rogue's speciality and it removes the risk/reward of whether or not to chance an opportunity attack. I would also really like to see ritual spells implemented along with reasons to not constantly long rest. At the moment, there's no reason not to long rest after every battle, which causes a bit of class imbalance, as wizards can just go all out every fight instead of needing to manage their resources.

So far so good (not great)

I was already prepared for what to expect, so I'm not surprised that the game looks more DoS3 than BG3 (by the way I love the DoS as much as BG saga so I don't mind at all). THE GOOD: - The story is interesting - The characters are well defined - The graphics are excellent - Nice interaction with the environment in combat (inheritance of the DoS system) - Party members interact a lot and make decisions on their own THE BAD: - No alignment system yet (maybe it will be available in the final release) - Combat is only "Turn Based" instead of "Real Time with Pause" (i'd have loved to have both, i hope in the final release) - Party limit is 4 instead of 6 (that's really bad, the thing i miss the most from BG, it forces me to have parties made only by cleric, fighter, wizard and rogue)

this game has serious issues

this game has "stolen" the name of baldurs gate, because it its not baldurs gate. the game puts on a nice looking graphics engine, but fails hard on camera handling, has ultra bad gameplay and balance issues to solve - even after one year of early access. the team size limit does not match the enemy armies, which power you out even if youre several levels on top of them - always, no matter which dices are rolling or strategy is taken. with being the only game i know that dodges completely all sales for a year now, although it is an EA, the given price for this game is way too much, compared to the gameplay issues it has for a year now. this game, with that price, those gameplay issues, hawking the name "baldurs gate", it is a clear _no_ recommendation. even without the name, it would not get a recommendation due to the other issues. it feels like a very cheeky cash grab! one can find way better games, which even more deserve the "baldurs gate" plate on it, way more backing story grounds combined with huge gameplay and balance depth for less money and released gold.

At this point, only for the curious

Though there is certainly fun and entertainment to be had, in some ways your actually doing yourself a disservice by not being able to play the game as a single seamless experience. in it's entirety. But rather, playing it in a state of flux, where graphics controls and features can vary and change from update to update, though usually for the better. Given the games scope, I don't think it will be ready for at least another year but I don't care because given the games technical scope and ambition and what they've accomplished already, particularly with regard to the level of detail I think that this will be the new king of crpgs and will remain so for a long time given how future proof the graphics are, with patch 6 improving things even further. But by level of detail I don't just mean in terms of graphics, but also in the amount of dialogue and voice acting. Tactical features and the things you can do to interact with the game world such as talk to any corpse of recently deceased using spells like speak with dead. To cosmetic details like grime and blood being bound to how long you've gone without rest or how low your hit points are. The detail is unprecedented. So for now, i like to play the game a bit with every content update and while progress is slow it is also meaningful, we will get there! But know what you're getting yourself into if you buy it now. There are many good and completed crpgs out right now, including some great older titles. More than enough to keep a player busy in the time being. But if you want a taste of the future, buy this now!

Good game but had to stop myself...

I own the Steam version of this game. I'm running an RX 5600XT, i5 9600K, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM. This game graphically is awesome in my opinion. I find myself spinning the maps and zooming in and out just to check out the detail...and the detail does not disappoint. The character creation is overwhelmingly deep. I have 7 builds and sometimes feel totally satisfied blowing an hour or two just building characters to potentially play with. It plays pretty much just like Larian's masterpiece Divine Divinity II with the addition of cutscenes and this is not a bad thing at all! So those are the good things. On to the not so good. I bought this one over a year ago and still, it's pre-release. There are some bugs to be fixed, but it is way better than what it had been from the beginning. In my 81 hours I never had a bug CTD but there were definitely some reloads necessary. Nothing that would make me quit playing, but know that it'll likely happen. It is huge. Have about 150GB for free space ready to occupy if you buy. If you run lean on space like I do then you should consider this. Those are the two minor detractants. The main detractant for me, and the reason I stopped playing until I hear of a final release, is that I hit the level cap about midway through Act I. Caps out at level 4. Still, it was a deal breaker for me, for now anyway and I wish I had known prior to purchase. It is uninstalled. I'm losing faith/hope/confidence that things are going to change anytime soon. Larian announced back in March of 2020 that the level cap was expected to be 10 for final release. Going on two years now....where's our leveling? Kind of a core component to D&D don't you think? Even if it wasn't a D&D game, it's a core component for any self-respecting RPG. Good half game they're selling at premium though. It gets a solid 3 from me and likely higher once it is a final release.
