Story

Three heroic explorers wander the post-apocalyptic desert on a mission to save their village from despair. They soon find a dark, twisted tower that has risen from the depths of the planet and seemingly holds the key to their survival. In order to ensure their victory, one of them has made a secret pact with the Titan of Death, Epimetheus, allowing them to reincarnate until they have accomplished their mission. But what fate lies in store for the heroes and their village?

Astalon: Tears Of The Earth is an action-platformer set in a dying world where life is cruel, but death can be a stepping stone to victory! Use the unique skills and weapons of Arias the fighter, Kyuli the rogue, and Algus the wizard, to surmount the mysterious tower and find the answers to their survival. Slay terrible monsters, discover powerful artifacts, and solve fiendish puzzles, reaching new heights in the tower with the aid of a Titan. Follow a story about friendship and sacrifice, building up the courage to take down giants to protect the weak and powerless. Strengthen your party and change their fate by embracing death. Discover the countless secrets of the Tower of Serpents!

An amazing game only dragged down a bit by luck or prior knowledge being required to make it through side areas earlier, plus the most unnecessary bit of artificial difficulty I've seen in recent years. It's called the Ruins of Trash and I just wanted to say that one more time. I'd write that on a brick and throw it through a window if I could.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a great reminder of what small developers can achieve with simple graphics and simpler controls. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who craves some old-fashioned platforming action and isn’t afraid to die a lot. Just remember to turn off the flashing lights and screen shake if you’re sensitive to that.

A must play for the fans of Metroidvania

This game is not only a really good MV, it mix it's own into the mix. You can´t heal early on, bear this in mind cause you will die and that's fine. When you die, you´ll lose some progress but you can buy upgrades! Upgrades can vary from stats for your characters to perks like indicators for the map, extra exp or the abilty to retrieve exp from distance. The game is ablend between Castlevania 3 with your typical MV, every character is important to traverse the map. Most puzzles are easy to solve, I didn't use a guide in the first playthrough. The map is fairly big, and the backtracking can be annoying if you didn't unlock the elevators and teleporters. The only thing I regreat from this game is not being able to play it as soon as I bought it, cause I couldn't put it down.

Great adventure platformer

I'll gladly admit I'm a sucker for platformers. And I love the exploration and unlocking of new abilities often found in metroidvanias. Got this on sale expecting to have an okay time with it. I did not, however, expect to get engrossed enough to immediately want to dive into the unlocked game modes at the end of the game. The graphics and sound evoke nostalgia for a system I never had when growing up. The gameplay is smooth and precise. Rarely did I feel I took damage because of bad mechanics or cheap enemies. There's plenty of challenge to be found, but very little of it felt cheap. The mechanic of starting from the beginning on every death seemed daunting, until I realised that apart from buying power between lives, your unlocked shortcuts stay open making death not that punishing, as long as you made a bit of progress in your last run. If you have a liking for platformers and for exploration I can wholeheartedly recommend this. Do note though: That filling in the bestiary is required for unlocking one of the extra modes. So if you want that, make sure to finish it before facing the end boss.

Very faithful to the Metroidvania genre

A huge map that is organically connected, As you gain abilities, the area you can go to expands, Soon hidden items and secrets, 8bit game style graphics and music, It is a game that mixes the classic sensibility with the modern Metroidvania genre. But only one thing is different. Ordinary "Modern Metroidvania" games allow you to upgrade your abilities at your base or save point, but this game requires you to die. At first, I thought it mixed the characteristics of "soul-like" or "rogue-like". However, looking back after seeing the ending, I see that only the upgrade method is different, and it is just a device for conveying the story.

Simply amazing!

I've just finished the game for the first time and it is one of the best metroidvanias I've played, for sure. Artwork, OST, design are all great, and the gameplay is demanding but really satisfying. At first I was a little intimidated by other reviews saying it's very difficult, but it gets easier as you explore and open shortcuts. Also, dying offers the chance to get a lot more QoL and strenght improvements. It does have some tough spots, but can be overcome with a little practice and patience. A strong recommendation in general, and a must-have for metroidvania lovers! My only complaint is lack of achievements here on GoG.

Better than expected.

Game is really well made for what it is and it perfectly fits my taste. Works great on Linux and performance is great. There is a lot of extra content available so make sure not to miss on it.
