Old style

Technical points first: graphics hold very well, art style is competent, voice acting more hit or miss. Overall atmospheric with good production values. The gameplay is what makes or breaks it, it's old style and not easy to reference. This is an action game, similar to a FPS in that most of the game is pointing, firing, choosing weapons as needed. It is also like a flight simulator in that you are flying a ship (underwater) and the control scheme flows from that genre. If you have a certain age you know games like Wing Commander, and this is similar: narrative driven linear missions. I found enemies, weapons and missions sufficiently varied. Escort missions can frustrate, but a couple replays and figuring the choreography sufficed to progress. The story has elements of cliche, but unusual setting helps.

Real fun, real weird.

Setup on a future dark-pseudocyberpunk-underwater world, Aquanox its a one-of-a-kind first person shooter. Although some of its missions have a "arena match" feeling and the story development its done in a quite crude way (A simple menu where you can just select the conversation) the game slowly embraces you as you go deep and deep in it. The story begins to develop as you begin to get used to the submarine fighting (Whose control is nothing related to a any other first person shooter I ever played, you have to get used to it and accept it) and the background story begins to grow larger and larger, and halfway the game you just realize that, even with its faults, with its particularities and with its not-so-great voice acting, you are having fun. I haven't played Archimedean dinasty, and I can't compare both games. I only know that, Aquanox its a really funny game, although not a perfect one.

A step down, but still good

I was genuinely disappointed by this way back when, as it failed to deliver on pretty much all fronts compared to Schleichfahrt (Archimedian Dynasty). No less, it's actually a decent underwater shooter with rather distinct mechanics, so I can't fault it for that. Not being as good as it's predecessor is a tough fate for many a game, yet some are still good games in their own right. I can't really add anything to what Flaser said, but I felt I had to give an opinion, as it's still kind of a part of my late youth.

My soul just had an experience. . .

I played this a long, long time ago (sadly, in this galaxy). I've been looking for a working copy ever since. All hail GOG, masters of my soul! The gameplay is excellent (if not perfect.) Underwater poses some interesting challenges to moving around and the way weapons work. It's fairly standard, but it does throw some twists your way. The story is. . .well, it's your typical giant monster lifeform of death underwater apocalypse story, but it is encased so well, that you won't notice most of the cliches. The graphics were, for the time, beautiful. I love being underwater, and this simulates it well. All in all, a dated, moderately cliche, alright playing game. I will never love another game as much as I did this one.

A quick summary.

As seen by someone how's not in to this type of game. I see a lot of long reviews here, so I'll give you my experience with this game in note form. install game, start game, watch intro and get a little hype up for the game, laugh at everybody but Flints voice, buy some shit, start mission, complete mission,start mission, complete mission,start mission, complete mission, start long mission, fail long mission and have to it all start over... from the start.... Every god DAMN time that STUPID A.I. fucks up or you get blasted by the FUCKTON of ships on your ass.... Need very long break from game. I don't know if this game was awesome back in the day, but I do know that's it's not the place to start with space shooters (Yeah I know it's under water, same difference). If you got this game as part of a weekend promo it's not something you loose sleep over, there is still some fun to be had in the game, if nothing else then to laugh at the voice acting.
