This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
Great mix of Japanese and Western style RPG elements with great humor, a gripping story, and a very unique cast of characters.
Excellent storytelling via professional-quality cutscenes and dialogue will accompany you through the entire 50+ hour long adventure.
Huge world to explore with many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve. One playthrough is, by far, not enough to see it all.
Anachronox is a masterpiece of RPG joy. As a lover of RPG's you really, truly should get it - bargain of the decade for such a fun and funny, complex and intelligent game :)
The quake 2 engine now looks so bad it is brilliant and feels like stylized cartoon graphics. You can speak to almost everyone in the game and get unique responses.
Combat is like Final Fantasy but the game itself is one of the best written and well realised Sci-Fi universes in the RPG genre, rivalling mass effect for imagination. It is in my top 10 games of all time, and top 5 RPG's.
Anachronox has some pretty good story and writing, with gameplay from a third person perspective and combat akin to old school turn based Japanese RPGs along with equipment, item and leveling mechanics.
I'll admit, I was pretty engrossed with the story and the writing at first when I purchased this back in 2013 and was really charmed by the fact that it plays on my love for old-school JRPGs.
However, that novelty wore off, as I continued to play. Here are the issues I have with this game:
- Slow combat:
In classic JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy, the party and enemy hit each other relatively quickly and responsively.
Anachronox, on the other hand, each characters' animation, including the enemies, are so drawn out, you actually wait for them to finish.
- The MISS mechanic:
But you know, what's even more infuriating? Your characters MISSING their attacks. After waiting for your characters to finish their move only to have it miss was one of the things that turned me off real quickly and made me quit. I revisited the game from time to time, but this MISS mechanic always got on my nerves. When I did finally decided come back to finish this game (for my completionist sake), I thought this mechanic would improve as you level up or got better equipment. But you know what, it doesn't. Despite being higher level and having Excellent weapons for all your characters, this mechanic NEVER goes away!
Thankfully, reading through some of the Community forums, I learned you could speed up the game including combat by pressing and holding the "" key on your keyboard. This feature is the ONLY reason I was able to complete the game. But a game should never need an outside feature to improve QOL.
- Yoyo Questing:
My last and final gripe is how some of the quests you constantly need to go back and forth between places to get your items or rewards, not a big deal generally, but this often involves going through combat areas to reach your NPCs (see above..).
Would I play this again? No
The first three hours are a bit slow, but once the game gathers speed it shatters every expectation. Well crafted humor, brilliant plot and a fascinating setting mesh well with the JRPG style gameplay. One of my personal favorite games, despite its slow start.
I've always been one to support the underdog and Anachronox was no different, after finding the game at a local store I purchased it (Still have the original CD!), installed it and never played. Years later after getting tired seeing it on the shelf all lonely. I loaded the game up and played it from beginning to end. It just gripped me. A washed out detective, a crazy old man and a host of other brilliantly conceived characters. Anachronox often didn't make sense but that's a good thing, neither does the real world...
