Always Sometimes Monsters isn't the first game to get clever with morality. It's not the first game that's had a few grey areas. It also isn't about either of those. It's about perspective. It's about empathy. It's about who we are and why we do what we do. That narrative is one of contradiction and hypocrisy, because that's what real people are about.

Rough gem with unfortunate bugs

If you go into this without expecting the next game that will blow your mind or keep you filled with excitement all the way through, then you'll enjoy this game a lot more for what it is. It does have quite a nice concept, even though there are some bits that keep you from fully enjoying it. The game is big on choice and consequence, with every decision making you wonder if you screwed up (game has multiple endings and you can get a bad ending quite easily). Being a good or bad character makes a big difference, and the game is filled with dialogue that will make you question the morality of your choices. However, despite your choices moving the game forward, there are bugs that make the whole purpose of the game a bit broken: Choices made throughout could be registered incorrectly and the game will act as if you did something differently during a key moment in the game, which negates your whole effort at being either a good or bad character. In this type of game, this sort of thing is very important and really messes up your experience. I hope the devs keep an eye on the reviews to notice these bugs and eventually fix them, as it would make the game be as intended and give a much better experience for every one. The game does have a few activities that are a chore rather than fun: your character needs to work to move the story forward, and time doesn't pass until you finish an activity. They are not that bad, and for certain key story moments it does give you the opportunity to take a shortcut. Unfortunately, the game doesn't make it clear though, and players could be 'forced' in activities that they didn't want just because they didn't know that there was a hidden shortcut they could take. Ending is a bit unsatisfactory too, and could have easily been made better with a few extra dialogue lines and variations. It would be nice if the devs added a couple of extra scenes during the ending bits to make your efforts more satisfying. I hope to see more for this game!

Un-put-down-able

The nice thing about the main character and their partner is you get to choose what race, gender, and gender of the partner you like best. So, for example, because I'm a gay guy I chose the main character as male and his partner as male too. That way the whole story was a gay romance. But it could easily be a heterosexual or lesbian romance too if you chose the appropriate characters. It was a great feeling to play a game with gay characters at the center of the story; you just don't see many games like this out there. The main goal of each day is to earn more money so you can continue your journey westward. You can take on some jobs to do that, you can steal money. The jobs are usually tedious points in the gameplay. Every so often the game will present a moral choice for you. If you take an immoral path, it helps you get money faster, or you can be moral, and pass up the opportunity. Some of the choices are pretty humourous because you would have to be a truly evil person to go through with some of them. The best part of the game is the story. I got excited to see if my character would make it to the west coast in time. I especially loved the scenes where the main character reminisces on how wonderful the romance used to be before everything went wrong. There is just a horrible feeling of despair whenever you come out of those memory scenes to the harsh cold reality that you don't have the romance anymore that I thought was well done.

Amazing!

I loved this so much! It's such a richly built world that's fun to explore, a complex story that's addictive and malleable to your choices! Not to be missed! But there are two things that confuse me. -------------- MAJOR SPOILERS -------------- On the final day, I objected to the wedding and he decided to marry me. But after being attacked by Sam and waking up, we go back to the scene from the beginning with the guy pointing the gun at the hooded person-who happens to be me! Who says that he rejected her and she wants to die now! But that DIDN'T happen! He didn't reject her! And after that we go back to the "real" ending when the couple go home, but he's tired so he went to rest and the door is locked, is that it? I don't know if it'll open again! Haha!

Its good

its another rpgmaker title so dont expect a lot of it, but the story is good and there a lot of moral decisions, if youa re like me and enjoy a good story over gameplay and graphics then youa re going to enjoy this title.
