Aarklash is a very straightforward game of tactical battle after tactical battle interspersed with some badly voiced exposition and some fairly easy puzzles to give you a breather between all those combat encounters.
I do like the setting, the glimpses of lore it gives you are interesting, and it has the bold, stylized aesthetic that was one of the main strengths of the miniatures game it's based on. But the characters have precious little to say, what they do say is generally quite poorly voiced, and the plot is abruptly cut in a non-ending that, with less time constraints and more budget, could conceivably have come across as an ominous bookend to the story.
In the end, fairly entertaining, and its pros manage to edge out its cons, so all in all a positive, if largely forgettable experience.
I bought this game on sale yesterday, not exactly expecting much.
Only a few hours in and it's one of the most fun games I've played in recent years. The combat is an absolute blast, the skill tree is interesting and actually requires some prior planning, and the graphics aren't too shabby at all.
I hadn't even heard of this game before the sale and I can already tell I'm going to be sinking a lot of hours into this.
Some backstory. The game is based on a miniature wargame called “Confrontation” and a table-top RPG called “Cadwallon”. Created by, now defunct French company, “Rackham Entertainment”.
I like the art and character design and overall style of the game. That's why I bought the so impulsively. Judging it only by the art design and I didn’t make my “due diligence” about the game.
My opinion is that this game appeals to a very niche audience - fans of the original table-tops and people who like only tactical battles. Like the ones in the original "Baldur's Gate" series or even harder battles. If this is the case, the lack of a story and tutorials and also the tactical table-top background makes perfect sense. There are gamers that want to "figure it out" by themselves. I'm fine with this kind of games.
But the advertising of the game never mention that. And I think that’s the main problem with many games these days. The advertisement makes them to appear to a broad audience, maybe to secure more sales. And the “Artificial Ingredients” like achievements or any other social bloat like the Steam Trading Cards, Market, Stats and Leaderboards are making the games to look “more valuable”. This incentivise the gamer to play a game just to get the “social credit” that deserves in the community. Even if the player don’t like the game. Because ‘You’re not a good gamer if you don’t achieve 100% completion’. I just don’t want to be manipulated with cheap tricks, any more.
The game is competently made. I didn’t have technical problems with the game itself. Only with the compatibility tool when I played it on Linux. For me, it worked fine with “lutris-6.13-3-x86_64”.
But honestly, It felt like a ”bait and switch”, to me with the simple linear non interactive plot and few conversations that are explaining the plot. Levels with little exploring or backtracking. And only the heavy tactical battle stuff.
The title really surprised me as i had not heard of it prior to seeing it on gog.com.
The combat mechanics are great and especially against bosses the positioning of your characters is very important.
There are few skills but they can be developed in different ways.
Currently i play the game with two different setups, one is very def focused and slowly wears the enemy down, one is very agressive with lots of aoe and high single target damage.
Characters are fun and not your usual run of the mill knight on shining armour.
If you like tactical combat you will probably want this.
This game reminds me of a current day Icewind Dale, which is a good thing! While I'm still early in the game, I really like what I've seen so far. The characters are all diverse and interesting, there are lots of different strategies when fighting enemies. I like being able to see what spell the enemy is casting and how long it'll take before it's cast. One character can refocus the mage's spell on herself. So this protects weaker characters by having the damage inflicted on the stronger one. It's also possible to get out of the way of a spell like a fireball. So there's lots of strategy and different things going on. Graphics are really nice too!
If you like games like Icewind Dale, I think you'll like this one.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
