A Normal Lost Phone is a game about exploring the intimacy of an unknown person whose phone was found by the player.
The game takes the shape of a narrative investigation: you have to search the phone’s text messages, pictures and applications, in order to learn about its former owner. Through this phone, you uncover Sam’s life, friends, family and relationships, until the evening when they turn 18 and mysteriously disappear.
Features
An immersive and intuitive way of introducing the narrative through a fake smartphone interface.
A game that bridges the gap between reality and fiction by letting players act as themselves. The game asks a simple question: if you close the app but still think about the game, have you truly stopped playing?
A relatable story that helps build empathy with the characters, allowing to explore difficult topics.
This is a nice short game about discovering the life of someone through their phone, and although it's not incredible gameplay wise, it still uses the video game medium in a pertinent and coherent way to deliver its story.
Definitely worth playing once, and who knows ? You might even get some insight into something you don't know much about, I know I did.
Bardzo spoko gierka! Kupiłem za mniej niż złotóweczkę i na 2h 40min grania to się opłaca - naprawdę przyjemna rzcz, choć trochę mało oryginalna... ale niektóre zagadki są powalone!
Really, the main point is discovering the story of the owner of the phone before it got lost. If you want a touching and believable story about friendships, relationships, bigotry and privacy and want to connect the dots between fragments of the story, this game might be for you. I found the characters well written and there are additional touches / interactions that add a bit of depth, and sometimes things get a new meaning. And I dare not say anything else about the story to not spoil it.
Gameplay-wise, it is rather simple. You found a normal lost smartphone with a simplified interface and you get to inspect the texts, pictures, … of the former owner. A few things are behind passwords, so you need to find those, but the puzzles are not hard if you follow the story (I looked up one hint, but I think it might not be really needed).
The interface is intuitive, but sometimes too barebones, e.g. swiching apps often does not preserve position, and since the game is very often "reading walls of text on a tiny phone interface", this is a bit annoying, but not too much. The music is nice and fits the game, the drawing is also cute.
I quite enjoyed the game, it hit home with me. I'd say, if you are not too conservative, give it a try (it's cheap and short :-D)
This is a short game (it takes just over 1 hour) with a very beautiful story. The "unfitting" theme is treated in a very spontaneous way. There are some puzzles related to passwords and codes to enter some applications, but nothing out of this world. The proposal is a short tour on someone's cell phone with a brilliant story. I found it very peaceful. Ideal for taking breaks from more complex games of the genre (adventure and point and click).
The Good:
Story - Fantastic. I liked reading all of the info and learning about the main character's life.
Music - I actually really enjoyed the soundtrack. Might have to go buy it now...
Art - Adorable, colorful, and added life to the main character.
Representation - The game is very informative on LGBTQ+ topics and challenges. I like that they included that for people who may not be aware (or for whom a "normal phone" game is easier to explain to their parents and friends).
I do have some gripes though. See below for those, but either way I still recommend this game. If you can get it for a decent price it is worth playing through.
The Gripes:
UI/UX - I liked the look and feel, but switching back and forth between screens and trying to remember dates and such that needed to be used elsewhere was annoying. If you left a screen it wouldn't stay where you put it. You couldn't do split screen or otherwise see multiple apps at once to make things easier.
Puzzles - Some were fairly simple and fine. I never really enjoyed them though. They were a chore to make sure you read everything on the phone hunting for the info you needed. It was a minor thrill when you finally figured it out at least. I found myself having to come back to things to remember where I had read something that was now important. There was lots of data that didn't add to the story too, nor was it interesting to read.
Don't spend too much time stuck on any one puzzle, look up a guide! I was able to solve all but one on my own and I agonized for an hour retreading old ground before I gave up. I was annoyed once I saw the solution. The other puzzles, while requiring thought and sometimes not being that intuitive, were at least straightforward and had plenty of clues to guide you. The last one though...I won't spoil it, but the elements involved and the one clue they gave along with some info that hadn't yet been used led me to think math was required. It was not -_-
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
