A Legionary's Life lets you play as a Roman soldier during the years of the Second Punic War and beyond. Rise up through the ranks and win prestigious awards or just focus on making it home in one piece; it's up to you.
This is a unique single-player game with RPG elements, extensive usage of attribute and skill checks, a turn-based combat system involving many variables and a touch of roguelike features.
In this game you will not be the hero who wins battles alone; you will be more like a gear in a much larger machine.
Features:
Live through (or die in) carefully reconstructed battles of the The Hannibalic War and the ensuing Second Macedonian War from the point of view of a pre-Marian Roman legionary.
Start as a poorly skilled conscript soldier in the middle of the Second Punic War. See how long you can remain alive and eventually become a respected veteran.
Permadeath: when your legionary dies, it's game over. However, the points earned by your most successful characters can be spent to enhance your future ones.
Dozens of random events affecting your life as a legionary.
Replay value. You will only see a fraction of the game in each run.
Turn-based combat system involving fatigue, morale, reach, confined space, high ground and more. Always keep your Stance high or you'll become a lot less effective and open to attacks. Adjust your Attitude to increase your odds of survival.
Frequent skill/attribute checks based on your values and the difficulty of the task at hand. For example, a good relevant attribute might give you a high chance to succeed at a specific task. If the chance is, say, 80%, it means you can still fail sometimes. Exceptionally high stats may even guarantee success, but they are difficult to attain.
Win rewards based on the real decorations used in the Roman army at the time, including Civic Crowns, Mural Crowns and Armillae.
Rise through the ranks in your maniple and become a Centurion. Or don't, and just try to survive until the end of the war.
Equip yourself with swords, helmets and armors from the mid-Republic era.

RNG? Yes, kind of. Your choices still matter though. Interesting, simple, yet original mechanics. And the story which seems pretty accurate (historically) and very well written.
I got this piece just yesterday and i can recommend it (price added a star). It is rather hard sometimes, but the rewards for your troop - let say, to yourself (i really like the boosting texts) - is also nice.
The grahics and the sound is hard from perfect ones, but the the over all sentences and possibilities offered through the battles and equipments made this game a good choice for your entertainment.
It requires brain usage. You clearly need to understand how it works - e.g. avoid chop while enemy got its full blue circle, at first you shall lower it to have more chance for hit.
It requires luck and nerves. In many cases hit is really chance based, but you can improve that with training and by participating in battles.
It requires bravery, courage. Hard to do or restart things, but without being brave you can expect low reward result (be brave and you can win more points/cash).
I was entertained with the story elements as well for quite a few hours, so just give it a try if you are looking for a challange and got the nerves.
It seems like all of the probability indicators are useless - I've connected with things that have a less than 5% of working and yet fail repeatedly on actions that show 60% or higher. The items don't really seem to do much either. I actually enjoy this game but after spending time really trying to learn the systems, it honestly just boils down to a garbage RNG system that really hampers the enjoyment of the game.
The writing and history is good and entertaining (especially to a Roman history fan like myself) but again, once it come to battle - you better hope your number turns up or it's going to be quite a massive slog.
When reading the reviews I saw a lot about the RNG and how it was punishing. I typically don't put a lot of stock in those kind of reviews. Boy, was I wrong.
Perfect Example: I perform well in a battle against soldiers and get promoted. While leading a squad on patrol, we are ambushed and I have to fight 2 bandits at one after getting wounded (without a skill check). They kill me. This was a RANDOM encounter with no stakes and not advancing the story at all.
Oh and by the way. Because the game is such a slog and the RNG is so heavy, you basically play the same battles over and over maybe getting a little farther or doing a little worse. I have never made it past the 3rd act and know exactly what battle will kill me every time and no amount of preparation help.
I suppose the game is supposed to be challenging but it does not feel great with the way its done.
Give this one a pass.
