Winter Sale special: GOG’s staff favorite releases of 2023 – check out what we couldn’t stop playing!

We’re approaching the end of 2023. It was an amazing year on GOG with a plethora of great releases that once again showed us why we’ve fallen in love with gaming in the first place.
Since many of those games are now discounted during our Winter Sale, we thought we’d share with you a list of some of our favorite titles that joined our catalog this year, and add a few personalized messages from our employees saying why we think they’re amazing.
Let’s see if you’ll find your favorite release there!

Baldur's Gate 3

Favorite release of: All of us
Well, who would have thought, right? But in all seriousness, Baldur's Gate 3 absolutely blew our minds. Since its release, we’ve been constantly playing it, talking about it in the office, sharing our characters and their adventures, some even scheduled their days off just to roll some dice in this masterpiece.
It’s truly hard to find words to describe how good Baldur's Gate 3 is. If you haven’t yet picked it up, do yourself a favor, as we believe it will find a place on every “The best video games of all time” lists from now on.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Favorite release of: Maciej, our Full Stack Engineer
Why:
So far, I’ve finished Phantom Liberty 3 times, and the base game 6 times. Both Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion are masterpieces that keep me going back to Night City, and now Dogtown. I’ve never played a game that made me develop such a strong emotional connection with the protagonist. CD PROJEKT RED has mastered the art of gripping narrative and had me soaked in it for hours on end.
The only thing I don’t like is that the game eventually ends, leaving a hole in my heart that cannot be filled with any other title.

UNCHARTED™: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Favorite release of: Zuzanna, our Creative Communication Specialist
Why:
If you didn't have a chance to jump into the wild world of Nathan Drake yet – there won't be a better time for it. A thrilling adventure that'll keep you on the edge of your seat, amazingly paced, filled with challenges both in gunfights and puzzles. Gameplay aside though, with every step you take in this game, you'll keep being baffled at how simply beautiful it is!

Days Gone

Favorite release of: Olga, our LiveOps Specialist
Why:
From the moment I revved up my motorcycle and plunged into the post-apocalyptic world crafted by Bend Studio, I knew I was in for an unforgettable journey. Yet, it even surpassed my expectations. It’s absolutely not just a typical zombie apocalypse tale – it's a visceral experience filled with emotional depth and moral dilemmas. And when you combine that with intense action, survival elements, and the encouragement of exploration, well, it stays with you long after the Freaker-infested dust settles.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Favorite release of: Patrycja, our Product Specialist
Why:
I didn’t know that the shift to a turn-based RPG combat system would make Like a Dragon my favorite entry in the series. But of course it’s not just that. The game's blend of intense drama, humor, and heartfelt moments is quintessentially Yakuza. The vibrant district of Yokohama offers a captivating backdrop, and the diverse cast of characters, each with their own quirks and backstories, adds a unique charm. It manages to balance the serious and the absurd, delivering an unforgettable experience that both honors the franchise's legacy and introduces a fresh, compelling direction.

Beyond: Two Souls

Favorite release of: Adam, our Technical Producer
Why:
I’m a sucker for games with interactive storytelling, and with its innovative approach to that element, Beyond: Two Souls quickly became one of my favorite titles. The game's non-linear narrative structure allows for impactful choices, influencing the story's direction and outcome. The emotional depth and connection to Jodie's character are heightened by the outstanding performances and impressive motion capture technology. It truly stands out as a unique and emotionally resonant gaming experience, where the boundary between gaming and cinematic storytelling is blurred.

Fallout 4

Favorite release of: Wojciech, our Software Engineer
Why:
To be honest, every Fallout title would find itself on my list of my favorite GOG releases in their respective years. And with Fallout 4 joining our catalog this year, it’s no different! With its deep lore, extensive customization options, and the trademark Fallout humor, the game is yet another memorable and expansive journey through the world of my favorite franchise.

System Shock

Favorite release of: Paweł, our Software Engineer
Why:
The original 1994’s System Shock is undoubtedly my all-time favorite game. It’s a masterpiece that defined the genre with its complex narrative, suspenseful atmosphere, and amazing gameplay. I can’t tell you how happy I was when I played the 2023’s System Shock from Nightdive Studios and saw that their remake is everything I love about the original while looking and playing better than ever.

Age of Wonders 4

Favorite release of: Łukasz, our Product Designer
Why:
When you create a new entry in an award-winning strategy series the expectations are sky-high. But in my opinion, Age of Wonders 4 managed to meet them all. It looks amazing, the storytelling is great, the customization system is out of this world, and the gameplay remains true to the signature blend of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat while offering almost limitless possibilities. I love it and would recommend it to every strategy fan.

Bread & Fred

Favorite release of: Maciej, our Customer Support Team Lead
Why:
It’s just so fun and so cute, while simultaneously offering a rewarding challenge. Moreover, it checks all the boxes of great co-op titles, and even provides a single-player mode which plays just as good! It’s an incredible indie game and if you haven’t already, grab it for your mate and you and swing those penguins.

WORLD OF HORROR

Favorite release of: Małgorzata, our Senior Graphic Designer
Why:
A collection of deeply unsettling, delightful adventures, back then in early access and even more so now. This game is the perfect example of why horror genre thrives in indie category, and how much unique creativity is out there, still to be seen in the world of (horror) gaming.

Montezuma's Revenge

Favorite release of: Adam, our Technical Producer (yes, the same one as before, because he just couldn’t decide)
Why:
A classic 8-Bit era game, released after years by its original creator. It’s a platformer game with metroidvania elements with different difficulty levels. Help Pedro find the treasure hidden in the depths of a pyramid. It’s one of the first games I ever played in my life and the sound the game plays when you collect a key is forever imprinted in my brain.

True Love '95

Favorite release of: Jędrzej, our Creative Communication Specialist
Why:
If you’re looking for more adult-oriented fun, True Love '95 will give you that in immense amounts. It’s a classic remembered for its bold departure from traditional dating sim tropes that left a mark on the industry, showcasing the medium's potential for diverse storytelling and player interactions. And it all holds true even today. I’d recommend it to both fans of the genre and complete newcomers, but for the latter, beware: it might make you fill your library with more of those!

DREDGE

Favorite release of: Katarzyna, our Head of Design
Why:
Wonderfully mind-soothing and visually pleasing.
And we believe those are just some of many qualities of this exceptional adventure title with horror elements. A mystery in the depths and fishing to survive? Sign us up.

Against the Storm

Favorite release of: Wojciech, our PR Specialist
Why:
A city-builder? Survival? Rogue-lite? Fantasy setting? What a blend of genres! Explore the wilderness under the rhythm of the rain and do not be afraid to follow your queen's orders. And remember the golden rule: Before heading out on the road the team should be collected.

Jagged Alliance 3

Favorite release of: Bartłomiej, our Expert Product Designer
Why:
As a big fan of Jagged Alliance 2, I've been waiting 23 years for this game. After a bunch of tries that didn't quite bring the series back, the wait is finally over. JA3 is a worthy successor, retaining all the charm of JA2 whilst embracing two decades of advancements in turn-based strategy games. If you're up for a challenge, this game's definitely worth checking out.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Favorite release of: Virgile, our Creators Relationship Specialist
Why:
Literally Pathfinder, but in the 41st Millennium. No need for more description, only a reminder:
"Watch your brother, for his sin of heresy is thy sin of tolerance. - Macharians 16.4”

SteamWorld Build

Favorite release of: Piotr, our Software Engineer
Why:
Simplified city-builder, but I can't stop playing for some reason.
Well, sometimes simplicity is the key, and with the game’s unique aesthetics and setting, it proved to be the key to many hearts of players.

Now, this list could go on and on with all the awesome games that we’ve had this year. It’s hard to include them all, but they all have a special place in our hearts. If you’ve missed any of them, remember that you can grab most of those with special Winter Sale discounts right now!
