Strategic Command: American Civil War - Wars in the Americas
Description
For the first time in the series’ history, Strategic Command will be taking you to the 19th century battlefields of the American Civil War. In this turn-based strategy game, you will control the armies, research, production and diplomatic policy of either the Union or the Confederacy during a time of great innovation and dramatic battles. Your decisions will determine whether the United States leaves this conflict as one nation or two.

What are your orders, Mr President?

A BRAND NEW BATTLEFIELD

Strategic Command: American Civil War comes with a massive 66,000 hex map, covering all of North America from Canada and New Mexico to the Caribbean at a 15km/9mi scale. This is the largest hex-based map ever offered by the Strategic Command series!

COMMAND YOUR ARMIES

With few professional soldiers ready to fight at the beginning of 1861, building an army will be just as important as ordering your men into battle. Thousands of volunteers are enlisting, and you will need to organise them into Brigades, Divisions and eventually Corps. Research will have to be undertaken to improve their weaponry and fighting skills.

Once their training is complete, you will be able to choose from a variety of famous Generals to lead them, including Lee, Jackson, Grant, McClellan, Beauregard and Sherman. With the fate of entire armies hinging on single battles, the appointment of talented Generals may well be the difference between victory and defeat.

RIVER WARFARE

The great rivers of North America, including the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland, can now be navigated by all-new river warships, with inland ports offering the opportunity for rapid movement, and their waters bringing the danger of amphibious attack.

THE AGE OF THE IRONCLAD

The war on the high seas has also been expanded, with ships now divided into rivercraft, coastal and sea-going vessels, and wooden and ironclad construction. With the most diverse roster of warships ever offered by a Strategic Command game, your admirals will have more opportunities than ever before to achieve victory at sea.

RECONNAISSANCE REWORKED

The fog of war has never been more important in shaping your success on the battlefield, as the lack of radio communications means that cavalry will be essential to locating enemy armies and avoiding ambush. Infantry scout detachments, partisan rangers and armoured trains can also be trained to expand the recon capabilities of your armies, while Generals willing to use experimental technology will have the opportunity to use observation balloons, taking the war to the skies.

EUROPEAN INTERVENTION

Diplomatic action, battlefield success and decision events such as the sale of the Confederate Cotton Stockpile or the Emancipation Proclamation will determine whether the European Great Powers intervene in the Civil War. The UK, France and Spain can all be persuaded to support the Confederate cause, and their entry could greatly alter the war’s outcome.

WAR IN MEXICO

As the Civil War divides the United States, the French Emperor Napoleon III is engaged in another battle for control of Mexico. The front lines in America’s southern neighbour will be constantly changing, and if France should enter the war, players will be able to take up the flag of the Republic or the Empire as the Civil War grows into a conflict to determine the fate of all of North America!

...AND MUCH MORE!

Using an enhanced version of the engine used by our WWI and WWII games, American Civil War also incorporates all of the much-loved features from previous titles in the series, ensuring that a great gaming experience awaits series veterans and new recruits alike!

FEATURES

6 campaigns covering the Civil War from first shot to last:

  • 1861 Blue and Gray
  • 1861 Manassas to Appomattox
  • 1862 Scott’s Great Snake
  • 1862 Trent War (Alternate History: What if the UK recognized the Confederacy?)
  • 1863 Lee Rides North
  • 1864 Make Georgia Howl

New unit types, including Balloons, Rangers, Monitors, River Gunboats and many more!

New technologies, including Naval Engines, Ironclads, Skirmishers and the Field Telegraph.

Riverine warfare is now possible, with waterways that can be navigated by 3 types of river vessel.

Official mods have been included with the game, allowing players to choose between two brand new map styles and the "classic" style used in our previous games.

The game also comes with an Editor that will enable you to make your own campaigns or mods.

Coastal and inland fortress defences play a much greater role in Civil War strategy, guarding many key ports and waterways. Built before the war, their locations are known to both sides.

Deactivating Partisan scripts, historical event popups and the European intervention mechanic now requires only a single event to be disabled.

Blast!

Strategic Command is the war game series that brings joy to my heart. The system is simple, but always has enough angles to keep you engaged, and generally takes multiple play throughs to wrap your mind around. It's a great way to dip your toe in the genre, and most agree that even when you move to a more difficult series, you will still come back and buy each and every Strategic Command game. This one is no different, we get to throw down in North America now.. joy! But.. Blast! This is the most sandbox heavy entry of the entire series, no doubt. It is also the most abstact, and perhaps the very first where it doesn't always feel like you are fighting the war at hand. When we think of the the civil war we think lines of men at key battles, which take months to prepare for, with swift climactic endings. This plays much more like a WW2 game taking place on a civil war map. And yet again they are putting way too much emphasis sea battles, which was the biggest problem in their WW1 game (one of my favorite games of all time). To look back on the American Civil War or WW1 and say that about 15-25 percent of the events should be hex based sea battles is ridiculous. I get it, blockades decide the outcome of wars.. but find a way to abstract it away from the hex warfare. And please... add one more visual level to the map.. aside from up close.. 5% less up close... and then the world map. These are basic things that hardcore fans speak with every release. We love your games! This game continues to grow, and is very fun to tinker with. The added decisions are helping with immersion, no question. If you want a fun sandbox strategy American Civil War game, or love the SC series, buy this and enjoy. Just a bit frustrating to see the same problems pop up yet again.

Engine ill-suited for the Civil War

I've played several of the Strategic Command games, but this one is the first that takes place during the 19th century. Knowing what the SC series is like, I was cautious about this one, and for good reason. The SC series is better fitted towards moving large units as 'fronts' such as in the world wars. The American civil war was about campaigns with army divisions and corps battling each other over terrain and flanking maneuvers. This is not modeled well in the SC engine. Yes, you can build units and move to capture enemy objectives, but the campaign doesn't play out as it would in any sort of historical way. The AI also seems to be confused as to strategy, so its units tend to move during turns only with the intent of maddening the player, and forcing the human opponent to chase down endless straggler units and guerillas that pop up rather than conducting a large campaign with focus and logical objectives. My biggest gripe about this game (and all SC games) is how manpower and losses are computed. By the end of my first campaign I had lost 64 units and the enemy had lost 145. That also includes naval. Ok, what does this mean in terms of manpower? The engine is ruthlessly simplistic towards this, as well as the more abstract elements of supply and reinforcement. On the plus side, the game does manage UI fairly well. The mini map shows areas controlled (most other civil war games seem to forget this simple feature). The choices for the played during event decisions is also fun. Do you clamp down on bootleggers selling gold and cotton to the enemy? And what about conscription? All these offer choices that will affect the game, and these can offer semi- and alternative history events unfolding. Overall it's a very 'MEH' game. If you're looking to grab a civil war game, there's Ultimate General, AGEOD's Civil War series, and of course Grand Tactician. All are better civil war games than this one, IMO.

Forces you to think in the future

Pros: - Approachable. Simple enough but not too much - Massive map alloving freedom of maneuver (eastern front is cramped tho) - Manageable scale and quick turns - Forces you to think many turns in the future when you make decisions - Not that many civil war games that focus on grand strategy - Addictive - Free campaigns outside civil war Cons: - One unit per hex makes some situations unrealistic due to scale, mainly eastern front and naval war - Simple combat. Not that big of a con as it's not the focus of this game - Basically only to nations (UK, France, Spain and Mexico can join in some cases). In other SC games I enjoy putting my allies under AI command and then living with their decisions This game is an absolute gem. It forces you to think many turns in the future when making decisions on what to research and how much, what to build, what to deploy where. Everything takes time, unit you bought arrives several turns later, moving from deploy hex to front takes turns, research is slow and units don't receive upgrades automatically. This tickles my brain just the right way. Combat is simple and reminiscent of Panzer General, although with added supply, morale, readiness and HQ bonus. Simplicity is not that bad though as this is strategy, not tactics game. Biggest downside of this game, and whole Strategic Command series, is that you can only have one unit per hex. This simplifies matters but creates unrealistic situations like eastern front resembling WWI trench warfare. Naval combat suffers the most from this, though not as much here as in SC:WWI where one naval combat could have ships in line stretching from UK to Norway. These problems with stacking prevention is my main reason of 4/5 instead of 5/5. If thinking where to attack, when and with what is more to your liking than the actual battles, then pick this up.

Strategic Command: American Civil War

i have played this many times and what i want to say is that this game has a much beter balance between sides, than the ww2 version, where the axis generally lose and that you 'don't feel like you're rushing from point a to b, blindly followin history. civil war seems to possess an element of freedom, whichever side you play.
