SuperPower 2 is the only global geopolitical simulation game which allows players to control entire countries. Players control countries in 3 major areas: political, economic and military, but this time, in a beautiful real-time 3D environment. Players build up their own countries and increase their influence in the broader world while competing against sophisticated A.I. Along the way, gamers make use of economic sanctions, political alliances, and military actions to wage their battles. SuperPower 2 offers the ability to fine-tune each country's performance, from creating or breaking treaties, to making tactical decisions in particular military conflicts.
  • 193 real countries all playable & equipped with realistic data drawn from the CIA World Factbook, the United Nations and U.S. Military databases.
  • Sophisticated A.I. designed to realistically simulate each country.
  • Real-life combat situations, with multiple forces joining and leaving battles as the balance of power shifts.
  • Real-time gameplay and Modular units building.
  • Solo scenarios and "sandbox mode", as well as full Multiplayer support for up to 32 players in a variety of styles, including world domination, economic master, and many others

The Definitive Modern World Game

Superpower is the game for the kind of people that like europa universalis, crusader kings or even iron hearts but want it to be based on a more realistic and contemporary perspective. the game's premise is actually very simple to understand: you can choose LITERALLY any country on earth(be it israel, the democratic republic of the congo, north korea, russia, china, japan, angola, libya whatever) in the contemporary modern world of the the 2000's and your goal is to turn that country, with whatever realistic reasources and influences it has into a world wide superpower: be it by increasing the country's wealth and GDP,conquering other nations or other such objectives that you normally associate with a worldwide superpower. the game is played from the perspective of a google-earth style map that can be displayed under multiple Criterias and the game itself lets you manage every aspect of the country you pick: from the rules it has on marriage, its civil budgets, its ruling party(provided its a multiple party democracy),buying different weapons, building missle and defence system, having covert operations in other countries or literally every diplomatic choice you can imagine. eventually: Your allowed to go to war and conquer nations in computer-rolled battles, letting you occupy and eventually assimilate territory. you can even say "screw it" to M.A.D(mutually assured destruction) and build a nuclear arsenal and initiate armaggedon. the beauty of the game is its realism: all countries are depicted in the most realistic way possible and the community for this game also has great patches to improve this realism factor of the game. all in all,if your in to grand strategy but want something more contemporary and relatable: this is the game for you.....just be sure to spread the word that gog has this game: it would make the world a better place :)

GOG version can play with Steam version!

Just tested out GOG and STEAM server discovery with the help of Mr. Monday. Turns out that SuperPower2 connects to the same matchmaking/discovery server (the server that sends you all of the active games so you can connect to them), so GOG users can play with STEAM users and vice versa. The details; Using a packet sniffer (Wireshark), I was able to manually inspect outgoing and incoming packets. After a little bit of snooping, I found 'gateway.nordic.rankedgaming.com' on an incoming packet. This suggested that Steam and GOG did in fact share a matchmaking server. I gave Mr. Monday a shout with his steam version and he graciously checked his server browser, and we compared against mine. He then set up a game using the Steam version, and I connected on my GOG version successfully. Hope that helps with any doubts you have about buying either version!

Missing the gameplay

Superpower 2 is something of a mixed bag. It does a good job on the economic and military simulation elements overall. The interface doesn't always make it clear why things are happening but you can learn to work around that as you get to know the game. But while Superpower 2 has plenty of depth it doesn't do terribly well as a game. You can do whatever you want, but there's little attempt to stop you achieving it. This can be unsatisfying. I let my game as Afghanistan run unattended for half an hour and when I came back the country was doing better than when I left.

Quick first impressions

Mind you: I never played this game before. First impressions: Works perfectly fine in Win 7x64. Cons: In settings there's no way to play it on a full screen 1920x1080. Game interface doesn't allow you to change the size of windows, seeing that you have plenty of space and these minuscule windows - it's really annoying. Treaties are messed up: countries can join them even though they weren't eligible to do that in real life (eg. Poland popping into EU in 2001), and joining any treaty seems to have only advantages - there's no duties or expenses or cons to anything, so you want to run though all of them and join everything you may. Map looks awful and is very non-functional (doesn't feel like Hearts of Iron or Europa Universalis at all). Interface is very click-heavy with little done to make it functional for the user. Managing your country is extremely simplified - to the point where sometimes it's just stupid (eg. options for internal laws about "Abortion" are: permitted / not permitted, moving capital city is just 2 clicks and no obvious effects) or almost intentionally made difficult (eg. no hints on what the effects of certain actions might be, the history screen is very... weird and picky in terms of what it wants to display, eg. there is government approval graph, but no unemployment or income graph?! some events and changes are displayed on it, but other are not for no logical reason I could think of). AI also seems to be doing some weird stuff... eg. tons of countries take control over cereals production? Really? Why specifically cereals?! To sum up the nation management side of the game let me give you this as an example: In my first play-through I played as Poland, standard difficulty custom scenario with an objective of raising GDP by 50%. It took me 3 years, 10 months and 27 days. WHAAAT?! I don't know, perhaps this game shines when it comes to wars and battles, but in a peace time - its... not great.
