J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars comes with a bonus standalone puzzle game J.U.L.I.A.: Untold.

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars is an innovative narrative driven adventure game which is being developed due to overwhelming support from a successful crowdfunding campaign.

The story centers on Rachel Manners, a 35 year old astrobiologist. She is a member of an elite group of scientists, chosen to embark on one of the most critical missions ever conceived on Earth. Now Rachel is alone, orbiting an unknown planet. Her only companions are J.U.L.I.A., the space probe’s artificial intelligence and Mobot, a huge reconnaissance robot. Together, this unlikely trio will explore the mysteries of this solar system. But are they prepared for what they will find?

Story
After countless years of careful space observation, the enormous telescope Chandra 17 suddenly locates a solar system quite similar to our own. As all earthly observatories turned their attention towards this new discovery, a signal of artificial origin is detected from deep within the system.

Reaction was immediate and a mission plan was conceived. No expense was spared in the construction of a massive space probe. It was designed and equipped to be ideally suited for the ultimate challenge: to meet and study extraterrestrial sentient life-forms. Equal care was taken with the crew. Only the most prominent scientists were selected and trained to ideally represent planet Earth. Everything was perfectly planned and success was certain. Yet somehow, everything has gone terribly wrong…

Now, imagine being jolted awake by an emergency alarm. As your surroundings come into focus, you realize you were deep in cryogenic sleep on a vast space probe. But why you are there is an elusive memory. Disoriented, you rush to the control room searching for answers. Once there you learn from the ship’s AI that not only have you been asleep for decades, but you are also the last surviving member of the probe’s crew.

To make matters worse, the probe is severely damaged by a disastrous impact with a passing meteoroid swarm. First, you must make repairs. Not only is your own survival at stake, but you need to find out what happened to the crew and why you alone survived.
  • Travel to six unique planets and uncover their secrets.
  • Utilize an ingenious MOBOT – a mobile robot designed for planetary exploration to investigate remote solar systems.
  • Solve puzzles, gather clues, and communicate with the most temperamental artificial intelligence ever designed.

Nice puzzles, disappointing adventure

TL;DR: "a nice game with pleasant logic puzzle and a weak story-line that I will quickly forget". J.U.L.I.A. is a point-and-click, puzzle adventure game set in space. This is a remake of a 2012 game, made possible by a successful crowd-funding campaign - and if you are reading this review, you are probably trying to evaluate whether it is worth your money or not. Here are my two cents! About the graphics: overall good, but not jaw-dropping. The whole game is basically a succession of panels that mix "hand-painted" and 3D rendered objects. The scenes are mostly static, and you won't be able to change the viewpoint. Animations are quite good but they are not very frequent. About the gameplay/puzzles: this is where the game shines the most. Puzzles were diversified and enjoyable. They can all be solved with logic and I would define their difficulty as casual: I was able to finish the game without looking once at a walkthrough. About the story: sadly, that's the weakest point of the game. The plot is non-imaginative and riddled with holes. Most of the characters, including the main character that you incarnate, are idiotic beyond description. Worst: the puzzles rarely make any sense in the context of the story, and I felt like they were just laid there to justify being a point-and-click adventure... In addition the story is very linear, and you will go through cycles of "get this item", then "research a newly available upgrade", to finally "go to the previously locked place using the new upgrade". Rinse and repeat. Overall, my honest rating would be 3.5 stars. I finally settled on 3 stars instead of 4, because at its original price of 20$ this game is clearly overpriced. In fact i even felt a bit robbed getting it with a 50% discount... If you are looking for an interesting story that will make you think, I would suggest the excellent Primordia instead. If you are looking for incredible alien vistas, maybe try The Solus Project!

A rather good point and click adventure

I purchased this during the insomnia sale in 2016, and I have just gotten around to playing Julia. J.U.L.I.A is a rather enjoyable point and click adventure, with detective work and puzzles done in a way that awakens my brain and makes me feel more engaged with the experience. The included hintbook assists you in solving puzzles that you may find difficult on a step by step basis. to reduce spoilers as much as reasonably possible. The voice acting is of a reasonably high quality, with the characters immersing me in the game world and making me believe I am actually there in the place of the protagonist. I would recommend purchasing this , if you want a point and click sci-fi adventure that will challenge and awaken your brain, at a reasonable price.

My most-enjoyed point-and-click

One of the best point-and-click games I've ever played. That this was pretty much made by two guys with a budget of a few thousand crowdfunded dollars is incredible. I took a risk buying this game. I like space settings, but know that point-and-clicks is hardly a hotbed for groundbreaking games, but this exceeded expectations. This is a remake/update of an earlier game, which form the looks of it was a bit crap, but here no shortcuts were taken in making this a proper game. The standard is way more professional than it has any right to be, the graphics are yummy, the voice acting and writing isn't as awful as you'd imagine. Even the few comedy bits inserted in notes or conversation were funny. Most of the puzzles aren't ridiculously hard, but still challenging. One of the endings ends abruptly without satisfaction, and the plot goes a bit (ok, a lot) weird and maybe drags a bit, but overall this was an enjoyable experience of making futuristic screens go bloop bleep.

Standard point and click with puzzles

Honestly, I really enjoyed the first hour or two of this game. I won't spoil the story, but after the initial planet the story really goes off the rails. It really shot my expectations and what I wanted from the game. That said, it was still a fun game and I definitely recommend it. It's a little on the short side though.

irritating point and click adventure

I have tried to enjoy this adventure game, the landscapes and environments are inviting and look great graphically but the interface, obscure puzzles and captioning ruin the immersion of the game. It would have been better to skip the AI of the rover and let the player click on objects themselves, reading flavor text etc without the annoying voice acting and mandatory captioning to take over during exploration. There is no way to turn it off so you have to listen to the AI both in Julia the onboard computer and the robot rover talk the flavor texts. Game mechanics also get in the way of pleasurable exploration as I was constantly trying to find my way to 'inventory', mandatory readouts of objects scanned, traveling to planets, none of which is easily used. Game grinds to a stop while I fumble around trying to find that obscure report needed or plant id or object. The game itself plays out more like a test of what you explore and you have to do weird mini games where you story board the plot in minutae for no purpose at all that I could find out. Puzzles themselves range from find objects to complete actions to such obscure puzzles a walk thru is mandatory and even with the exact answer often the puzzles dont solve due to some minute color change or name insertion (where there are multiple identical names to choose from). There is a hint function for each puzzle, which lays out a bare bones description of what is to be done, but once again the instructions are extremely vague to be worthless. Voice acting is subpar, you wonder why such intelligent and skilled astronauts could be so unprofessional, gossipy and lack any mannerisms due to scientists. Julia herself is pretty worthless as a ship computer, unable to even turn off power and release fire fighting capabilities on her own. All in all, its a bit idiotic. The story is intriguing and flying to planets interesting. I just wish they let us do that and skip the dumb interfaces.
