The Laziest of the Whole Franchise

I am a big fan of both Dishonored games. So I am a little biased here. I bought this one on a promise of visiting the Void as a setting. The Void could have been the ultimate sandbox in Dishonored universe, as it could have given a lot of artistic freedoms to the developers. Without any spoilers, a player spends an entirety of 5 (five) minutes in the void at the end of the game. And that is it. I am not kidding. Main complaints about the game: - It has only 4 levels. In general shorter than Knife of Dunwall or Brigmore witches. 2 of the 4 levels are reused, which is a big letdown. - The game introduces 1 (one) new enemy type that you encounter in the last 15 minutes of the game. Easily avoided by just running. - Linear story and progression. There is only 1 decision in the game which you make at the very end. Apart from that, your actions will only change some articles in the newspapers, and nothing else. - Limited character development. Everything is set in stone by the developers. There is some fun to be had here. But it mostly comes from the solid mechanical foundation that Dishonored 2 provides. Combat and stealth is smooth, yet mostly limited in comparison to the main game. Dishonored 2: Death of the Outsider is by no means a bad game. However, I came to expect more from Arkane Studios. And I was disappointed with the overall experience. It is not a complete disaster, just a small portion of the same fun you had in Dishonored 2. Get it on a 50% sale or more. Otherwise it is not really worth it. P.S. GoG does not allow changing of the reviews after they are posted. Shameful display. Please complain about it in any form you can. Thank you.

For Dishonored fans only

Short enough to be a Dishonored 2 DLC. Even if it had been a DLC, numerous factors make Death of the Outsider feel like a low-budget, low-effort attempt. Re-used areas. Preset skill-tree. Linear progression through levels (all those alternate routes through a level Dishonored is known for? Mostly missing). No chaos system; there are no payoffs for playing stealthy / non-lethal. Gameplay becomes mundane fast because, with no customizable skill trees, you'll be doing the same things over and over. Despite the presence of NG+, few will want to bother with an immediate second playthrough. Fans of the series will still love the atmosphere, and Dishonored's unique graphical style returns. Daud returns but is criminally under-used. Billie Lurk (from the first Dishonored game's Knife of Dunwall DLC) is the protagonist here, and Rosario Dawson does a fantastic job voicing her. I also enjoyed all the lore surrounding the Void and actually getting to dig a little deeper into what sort of place it is. But that's about all there is to recommend Death of the Outsider. Worth a buy when discounted, though if you enjoyed Dishonored 2 be prepared for a game that may disappoint and fascinate in equal measure.

Weakest addition to the franchise

Death of the Outsider is in my opinion the weakest part of the whole franchise so far. Although I appreciate new powers and locations which are very interesting, I feel that the momentum that was presented in the rest of the franchise is lacking. I would not be surprise if it would fit someone's taste perfectly, but it is just such a side-step from the traditional pattern these games have, that fans of the series might find it not as satisfying. Even though I would not call the gameplay bad, it is still good but not as good as I was used to. The part that left me most dissapointed was the story. I can't tell you exactly what I didn't like about it to avoid spolers, but let me just say that sometimes less is more. I feel that I would be actually happier if I didn't play Death of the Outsider.

They could've tried harder.

There just little good that can be said about DOT. The idea was good, but poorly executed. Poor power design that most of them are the same that the previous games just with different style or effect. Same location of Dishonored 2 that could've been another place never seen like Tyvia or Morley. An old character with so much potencial wasted. And quite short for a Dishonored game. This should've been a DLC and not a separated game.

A letdown.

This is based on playing the "Dishonored: Death of the outsider" in the "Complete Edition": I felt that the third game was OK, but still a letdown. It was as short or shorter than the first and five years older original game, and far from as long as the previous and second game. I felt "under-powered" with so much less powers and abilities to choose from compared to at least Dishonored 2, and therefore felt underwhelmed by having less options and possibilities to adapt my tactics compared to the previous game(s). Too much recycling of at least two areas during the second and third mission in this game, and of an area from the second game in the fourth mission! I felt it ended abrupt: The "whole" game was about getting to the Void, and when finally there, it more or less just ended with choosing some arguments during a dialogue and left me feeling that the game ended with an anticlimax. Did the developers run out of money and had to end further development? The OG+ broke parts of the game by swapping and not adding powers and thereby making achievements and parts of the game impossible/unreasonably hard. With completely different powers, the game STILL required the original set of powers, gave you bonecharms for powers that you no longer had, and advice during load screens for powers that you no longer had. Another indication that the developers ran out of money to continue development or just sloppy development and lack of testing?? The game was rock solid without a single crash or bug that I can remember, with good sound, voicing and graphics in 1080p @ 60Hz. Liked the commentaries by Billie Lurk, at times they saved me from making mistakes and sometimes gave good hints. To sum up: Do not buy this game until it is very discounted, and do not play this game before you are too bored by the two previous and better games in the series to continue playing them! Not quite 4 stars but 3 solid stars IMHO (changed my mind from "Complete Collection" due to the flaws).
