What a horrible night to have a curse!

Someone should have warned the Covenant children: “Never read aloud strange rituals.” Little did they know that their childish game would unleash unspeakable horrors upon the unsuspecting world. Now, many years later, Jeremiah Covenant, the last sane sibling, lies on his deathbed knowing his fragile existence is the only thing restraining the curse. His only hope is Patrick Galloway, a fellow soldier from the Great War and a specialist in abolishing evil abominations.

Welcome to Clive Barker’s Undying, a horrifying FPS romp of curses, strange, mad creatures, and family dysfunction gone terribly wrong. Step into the shoes of Patrick Galloway as you attempt to banish the evil using your arcane magic and the ever-dependable six shooter of metal grace. Pray to whatever god you believe in because this journey may end up costing your soul. First person shooter meets the contemporary master of horror fiction, don't miss it!

Classic Horror title

Penned by the legendary Clive Barker, Undying sees you called to a friends family estate. Jeremiah thinks he is losing his mind and it is up to you to put a stop to his siblings. The game is based around a central hub as such, now this central hub though is actually a pretty dangerous in comparrison to other games. The hub itself is the house, which is haunted and has various creatures doing rather nasty things to the servants. As you progress you will unlock new areas to explore going to ruins on the outskirts of the gardens, catacombs under the house etc You have to solve the mystery of the family and stop the siblings. The game uses a modified Unreal Tournament Engine and does look a little dated but it actually suits the whole haunted house gritty atmosphere, I feel it adds to it. The sound is superb, voice acting, ambience, music and effects all add to the superb atmosphere created. At times you will hear something off in the distance which will put your nerves on edge, literally what you don't see can be just as jarring. You have a large selection of weapons which range from era specific handguns and rifles etc to more extravagant powerful melee weapons. You also have use of various magics to help see what has happened before, shift time (later in the game) and watch ghosts and victims alike. Whether you are a fan of horror titles or shooters Undying is a must have. Great writing / story, visuals and sound all wrapped up into an awesome game.

One of the best horror-themed FPS

Clive Barker's Undying is a mostly forgotten horror classic with a great storyline, without cliché characters, and a great atmosphere. It's also not about mindless shooting, despite being an FPS, for 2 reasons: 1. You can use magic (some are offensive, while others are defensive), and there are some which aren't made for combat (for example, looking into the past) 2. You don't have that much ammunition, and some enemies are immortal. About the main story, without spoiling it: you are Patrick Galloway, an Irish man wanted for murder. Patrick is innocent, and set up by an evil count, who is the arch-nemesis to the protagonist. One day, Patrick gets a letter from his old superior officer from World War I. He's weak and dying, so he invites Pat to his old family island, for a last wish. After that, hell breaks loose, and you will soon find out why. ;) The games uses elements from Lovecraft stories, as well as some more mystical elements, like time travel. Unfortunately, the game didn't sold so well despite good reviews. There was actually a planned multiplayer patch, but it was abandoned. It was published by EA, and because of the financial flop, it's unlikely there will ever be a sequel to this great game. Overall, I will give this game 4 of 5. It's creepy, got a great soundtrack, has great weapons and magic, and has an interesting storyline. Worth the money!

Horror classic!

It was one of the very few games that made me "really" scared. I beat FEAR, Amnesia, Condemned alone at night for example, and I was laughing lol. But even now, after all those years I find it difficult to install this game. This is the best Clive Barker game, though he hasn't written too many video games - so it's a must for all horror genre (movie/game/book) fans.

FPS as art. Scary art too

Undying is an FPS with an emphasis on atmosphere and story. It’s up there with games like Portal for just sucking you in and keeping you there. The game is beautiful. I don't just mean that the graphic are nice. Every room in the Gormangast-like mansion in which the game is set has tons of love poured into it. Thanks to the design and details every environment stands out from the last. Rural Ireland is invoked to beautiful and terrifying effect. I’ll never forget the sense of agoraphobia I felt approaching the high ruined monastery with a deep howling coming from down below. The intact monastery with snow all around and plainsong heard from inside is awe-inspiring, but slightly chilling. Look out for a section of the house clearly inspired by La Bell a Le-Bett. Unlike modern scary games Undying doesn't try to scare by simply nerfing your ability to fight, you get a really fun set of weapons and spells. It gets to you with creepy imagery, sounds and moments. A very spooky story (Seriously read all the text, it enhances the game tenfold), best of all a constant feeling of dread. You never feel safe unless the game wants you to (and that’s rare). Undying is a very scary game but it’s also really fun sometimes, some parts have a strong adventure feeling, it feels like Half-life at times. More than a horror FPS. Like being in a novel and a dream at the same time. Recommended even if you are not a horror fan

Still worth fullprice

I'm not so much into horror or Clive Barker at all - but this one got me. This title isn't only for horror-fans a must have - this title is the shining star that makes the sentence "There's something good in every genre!" entirely true. The first time it took me several attempts over more than a year to withstand it. Okay, I've been much younger then, but it really frosted my veins - in a good way. I dislike horror - not only because I always know what's going to happen next - but I absolutely love Clive Barker's Undying. It's a ride through lava and ice at the same time and worth more than twice the amount listed. FarCry or FEAR - the level design usually tells you where the next monster comes from and when it will come. Not with this game - you're on your own and you will die. No spoilers, no help, nothing more to say. Just get it. Turn off the lights. Maybe light a candle. Play it.
