Even bigger and better than it looks!
Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich is an excellent stand-alone game with an interesting mix of characters and powers, fun plotlines and no dramatic changes from the first game. New characters, slightly tweaked ranged power use and format, but other than that pretty much the same sort of thing. In a series of increasingly tricky missions (though none that are too challenging) you square off against Nazi supermen and their minions with squads of four heroes based off of classic Marvel creations. But the game really starts to shine when you check out the enormous community that has grown up to support it! A whole pile of talented folks, with Irrational's encouragement, added a truckload of extra goodies that can be easily included in the game, including: 'Skins' which can be placed on existing characters to transform them into popular superheroes. Wall-crawlers, shell-heads, men of steel... there are literally thousands available now. 'Meshes' which create a new frame for skins to be placed on. (Vertex's Godzilla mesh being a personal favourite.) These usually come with their own custom Skins. FX packs that add new power effects for the game. Lots of giant green things and web things, oddly enough. 'Mods' which provide whole adventures in different settings, often using familiar super-characters. A lot of the above is for the original game, but there's plenty out there for FFVT3R too, and conversion programs exist to transfer skins and meshes between the two games. Back in the day there was a thriving community dedicated to this game, and bits and pieces are still around on Yahoo message boards and a few diehard sites, like New Power Inc. (with Transformers!) or Alex's Freedom Fortress (probably the best place to start). Very, very highly recommended!
