Dungeon Keeper 2 - It's good to be bad

GoG.com has listened to my greatest wish in including one of the best games I've played in my life. Dungeon Keeper 2, the sequel to Dungeon Keeper (yeah, surprise, I know), has a great deal to recommend it for. Just to go through it: Gameplay - Dungeon Keeper 2 took the gameplay from the first part, polished it up, and then let it run wild. They've changed some functionality, some of the rooms, and that's completely to be expected. As an example, creatures can only be trained up to level 4 in the training room, and then require a different room (the Combat Pit), to advance any further. This approach causes to player to turtle less and wait for his creatures to reach level 10, and interact with his creatures more to get them to as high a level as possible or necessary. Other new gameplay elements include the stunning of creatures as they are dropped - In Dungeon Keeper you could flood a hallway with your most powerful creatures the second you saw an attack coming. In the second instalment a bit more tact was required due to this new approach, though I understand that some may dislike this. Overall though, the gameplay is smooth and polished, and it feels good if you keep your dungeon running smoothly. Of course, the basic mechanics remain the same - you have your dungeon heart, which is your life, essentially, your imps which do your menial tasks for you (though they don't cost gold to summon anymore, but rather the newly implemented mana), your portal which attracts your creatures based on the rooms which you've built, and so on. All in all, managing your creatures and your dungeon well is satisfying and well done. Next up: Sound design. While the music often feels a bit like background noise (with the exception of the fairly nice theme that plays during heavy combat), it is spot on to suit the game's atmosphere. The other aspect of sound, the sound effects, are great. Each creature has his or her own unique 'voice', and they're easily recognisable. And, most importantly, we have the mentor. He who inspires us all with his instructions, and above all his unrivaled sarcasm. He plays his part brilliantly, and I've often grinned after a particularly nasty remark. Graphics: Graphically the game was pretty good for its time. I'll admit I'm not the greatest judge on the planet, but the game looks great, the graphics very much suit its style, and it runs smoothly. What more could I possibly want? :P Summary: All in all, Dungeon Keeper 2 is an absolute classic - in my opinion, put the knife down - that deserves to be played by as many people as possible. While it has its flaws - combat feels clunky, and creatures do get confused from time to time - the final product is one that I've thoroughly enjoyed time and again, and I've long awaited a version of the game that could be played on a newer PC because the game was, quite frankly, a ***** to get working on a newer system. Thank you for this GoG.

UPDATED COMPATIBILITY - READ

This is what happened so far. When this was first released, it had Windows 7 listed as compatible. Everyone complained, saying it wasn't working, and Windows 7 was removed from the list of compatible systems on the site. Now it is back on the list (as of today or yesterday, it seems), so people should probably NOT look at older reviews to determine compatibility for this any more. I honestly haven't downloaded the game yet, so I can't confirm that they actually fixed it, but DK2 is a fantastic game, and people should keep an eye on new reviews to see if the errors have actually been fixed. Please up-vote this to get peoples attention.

Not as good as 1, but still great for DK fans

As others have said: this game isn't as good as the first game, but by no means does that mean this game isn't enjoyable. If you don't know anything about Dungeon Keeper games then you should really play the first one before even looking at this. What's new to DK2 is mostly a set of refinements and tweaks to the existing game mechanics, as well as beautiful new graphics that don't look like vomit a decade later on your giant TVs (see: Dungeon Keeper). The controls have also been vastly improved for the first person possession, and you can assign your creatures to group up with you whilst in first person which makes the game a lot less painful. The biggest change to the series is that it's now possible to mine through enemy walls. No longer can you just mine out your base, fortify and build up in relative safety. Not only does it mean the base aesthetics can be destroyed in an instant, but also you can't hole up every mission and max out your creatures levels - especially as you can only reach the mid-top levels via actual combat now. You can pit your creatures to gladiatorial combat to train them up now, which makes training actually require some seriously healing and micromanagement unless you want your army to be dead in a few minutes. Traps have also now been greatly modified: new inclusions being wooden barricades (to finally shore up those pesky holes in your walls!) sentry cannons and skeletal fear traps, among others. Whilst they look really cool it's quickly apparently that even the weakest of creatures can take out almost any trap (except maybe the fearsome lightning traps) in posession mode in a few seconds, without even being hit. All of this (except maybe traps) does lead to a more enjoyable experience in general, so it may raise the question why I would rate this game worse than the original. It all comes down to the campaign missions really: for the most part.. they aren't very good in comparison to the original. The biggest fun and challenges were taking on enemy keepers, not heroes, in the first one. In the second one there's only a handful of levels that have enemy keepers in them, and only one level in the whole game that has a free-for-all keeper fight (although that level is very, very good indeed which begs the question why there isn't more). Sure there are some fantastic hero levels too - such as having to build your entire dungeon in the ruins of an enemy castle without them noticing you are there, utilising secret doors and stealthily killing patrols - but ultimately most of the hero missions fall flat. There's also a sandbox mini-campaign where you are given perfect (or sometimes.. slightly less than perfect) conditions to build up a dungeon in total safety and meet some arbitrary requirements. It's what every fan dreams of but the lack of any challenge kind of ruins the fun of it - the hero waves are all player designed and triggered, so unless you're a sadist you don't have any reason to come close to losing ever. tl;dr version: Vastly improved engine and graphics, generally less enjoyable missions. Worth getting if you loved the first game but couldn't say the same if you wanted something better.

Fiendish Fun in the Underworld

Dungeon Keeper 2 is a hybrid action/builder/fantasy/RTS game in which you're cast as a demon charged with creating and running various layers of the underworld. In campaign mode you must destroy the realm of "The Sunlit Kingdom of the Heroes". ITS GOOD TO BE BAD and that's what you do in DK2. You build and manage your underworld, stock and populate it with variations on evil creatures, scary dungeons and other hellish themes so that do-gooders and niceness can be wiped from the face of the realm. All this is done via an on screen control panel and thru direct interaction with your hellish 3D underworld dungeon. It is of course, all in good fun and highly accessible. One aspect of DK2 you will like is its a very easy game to catch on to. With three modes to choose from - Campaign Mode, My Pet Dungeon Mode and Skirmish (sandbox) Mode. The first few levels of the Campaign Mode being very easy and very fun tutorials. With a great Tim Curry/Vincent Price-esque narration, by video game voiceover veteran Richard Ridings, to egg you on. In addition to the great tutorials and an easy to use interface (with just a tiny, almost negligible hint of clunk) there's a well set out manual if you ever do get stuck. A good variety of options and settings in regard to game speed, graphics quality etc also help your gaming experience. Visually, considering the 1990s "3D graphix" (wow dude!), it's not bad - altho that may vary as per your device and whether or not you have updated the game. While the viewing angles in-game are near seamless and many, ranging from top down to "shooter style" (which includes the ability to "possess" any one creature at a time in a first person view), the zoom is somewhat limited in that a higher more distant god's-eye view would have been useful. But all things considered, DK2 remains a very accessible and enjoyable RTS game and most important of all its FUN. And as you know if its not fun its not a game and DK2 is, if nothing else, a fun game. RATING 72%
