Slow... Not great

I bought this on sale for like $5, so I probably won't return it (not worth the effort), but it's not great, even by 2015 standards. For starters, it has a fixed resolution that is MUCH lower than modern monitors, so you're playing in a small window in the middle of your screen. Add to that fairly tedious navigation and clunky controls and you get a game that could have been pretty awesome, but isn't. Graphics, sound, etc aren't bad, but also aren't stellar. It's hard to get past the mild blurriness in the tiny little window. I'm sure there's someone who might like this, but I'm definitely not it.

Played on IOS When New

I played a lot of this on the iPad when it first came out, because I was a fan of Rodeo Games' previous sci-fi tactical titles. Eventually too much of the game became DLC locked so I dropped it, but this is probably fair as a complete pack for $5 on sale. It's a light, tactical RPG where you crawl through (mostly) linear dungeons leveling up a party. There is an overworld section where you choose from available dungeons/quests on a map and then the tactical game where you adventure. I'd say you could easily get 15-20 hours of entertainment out of this if you like the style of game, so probably not a bad deal for the price if you like the franchise.

Best played on "Hardcore" mode

As other reviewers have previously stated the game can become monotonous/boring if played on the Normal or Easy modes. Where the game truly shines, though is if you play it on Hardcore mode. In that case the game becomes a Rogue-like. If one of your hardened heroes dies in the dungeon, then he's lost forever (along with all his inventory) and you have to either forget about him or hire a fresh one (starting from Level 1). Again: if one plays the game on the easier settings, it can indeed become a chore. But if you play it on Hardest mode, then you get all the sensations of playing a Roguelike: calculated risks, stress from random encounters and fear of losing a veteran party or an extremely powerful hero to an horde of Orks or victim of Undead magic. TLDR: if you're just looking for a casual experience playing an Warhammer-inspired tactic dungeon-crawler, then this game is not for you. But... if you're into Roguelike dungeon-crawlers, then give this game a chance (playing on the harder difficult setting) and you'll likely be pleasantly surprised.

Ever wished you could edit the game mechanics?

Ever wished you could edit the game mechanics when they don't make sense? Turn-based skirmish games are my favorite, but this game is frustrating. Pros: Good interface No glitches Runs in 1080p on my AMD FX6300 w/GeForce GT710 on Ubuntu 22.04. Cons: Interface - You can zoom out to see an entire room, but each turn the game zooms in close . Limited Maps - Each dungeon is rooms 4 people wide linked by 2 people wide halls. Space Hulk anyone? Why can't the game engine handle more open maps? Difficulty - Enemy strategy is undeveloped. Each enemy runs to a random player in its range. If it blocks another enemy it doesn't care. You can't move after your first melee attack, so you get stuck after killing the lone baddie that reached your dude. Instead of strategy, the devs kneecapped the player. Your characters miss often. The Ogre's Head Crusher skill fails until you're down to the last Rat Ogre. Prayers are mostly ignored. Winds of Magic disappear for 2 turns when a boss appears. It's not random. Higher enemies beat down any of your dudes in 1 turn. Only the Ogre's "Head Crusher" skill can do that to an enemy boss. Players can use all melee, ranged, & magic each turn, even if in melee. Magic users cast any spells they want if they have points. Archmage has either offense or defense magic each turn. Feels like a handicap to cover for no strategy. XP upgrades random. My War Priest is a fighter with low health; Shadow Warrior has more health than Trollslayer. XP goes to dude that makes killing blow or magic users healing others. Have to plan who gets XP for each kill. Bad spawning - Enemies spawn in melee, mixed right in with the fight. Just cleared a room? Enemies spawn behind you, requiring backtrack. Ranged & magic users spawn as far back as they can with line-of-sight, often rooms ago. Bosses can spawn in consecutive turns, overwhelming you. Mismatched enemy types often show up in the middle of a fight, but only fight you. It doesn't feel coherent.

Excellent Desktop Mac Game

I got it on sale but there's a lot of content here and it runs very nicely! On occasion I'm very happy to have a simple but extensive game to play on my Mac which runs smooth and doesn't require constant attention: something to play for a bit then pause when I need to get back to a Discord conversation or something finishes downloading. This game fits that niche nicely, arguably better than it even worked as a mobile game. There's everything here you could generally want in a no-frills RPG: loot, light character customization, an ongoing plot and sub-quests, lots of enemy types to fight, a straight forward interface, towns to visit for upgrades and buying and selling things. The Warhammer coat of paint is welcome because of adding some grit and personality to something that might otherwise have just been a D&D knock off. No voice overs, a pretty standard but not grating musical score, and thankfully what hasn't carried over is the constant adds or requirements for in-app purchases. For a tight, lengthy, simple RPG you can do much worse!
