Discover the grim dark universes of Warhammer where there is only war. From Warhammer 40,000 to Warhammer Fantasy and more - discover it all on GOG Warhammer Franchise page.

Gladius Prime was known to Imperial scholars as a planet of archeological interest. During its colonization ancient relics were found, revealing hints of a shrouded past. But it was more than relics. Something awakened, an unspeakable horror from an ancient past, and the citizens of Gladius found themselves trapped in a terrible war for survival.

Gladius Prime was once a planet of peace. Now there is only war.

Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War brings you to a world of terror and violence. Four factions will engage in a brutal war for dominance over the planet’s resources.

In the first 4X turn-based strategy game set in Warhammer 40,000 you will lead one of four factions: Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks and Necrons, each with their own unique gameplay, technological tree, units and heroes.

Face a challenging AI or cooperate or compete with friends and strangers across the globe. Play as one of four iconic Warhammer factions (Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks or Necrons), each with their own unique playstyle and technology tree. Explore a randomly generated world filled with special features and threatening wildlife that can crush your troop's morale. Secure control of powerful ancient artefacts to grant you an edge against rival factions. Construct cities, buildings and fortifications to expand your empire and produce an army to vanquish your foes. Harvest resources and research new technologies to fuel and upgrade your machinery of war. Progress through a different storyline with each faction as their destiny on Gladius Prime, a world tainted by the warp, unfolds. In the end, when all the dust has settled, only one faction can emerge victorious. Command a wide array of devastating weaponry, issue city edicts and deploy tactical operations. Recruit hero units that possess distinct special abilities and can be equipped with items, ranging from advanced grenades to mighty relics of the past. As they become more and more powerful with each rank, they turn into true champions of your cause.

More like Advance Wars than Civ

Do you remember when they brought Age of Empires and Age of Mythology to the Nintendo DS and changed them into Advance Wars-esque turn based strategy games with upgradeable cities? Gladius is like that for Dawn of War 1. The premise is that a warp storm has ravaged a once-prosperous Imperial stronghold, destroying everything, randomizing the map, and littering the place with Old One artifacts. It's a hex-grid turn-based strategy game with city founding/developing/spreading, units with a movement phase and an attacking phase who get overwatch if they finish their turn without firing, and cappable resource hexes and goodie hut-equivalents. The factions collect resources in significantly different ways that encourage different playstyles (Orkz gain resources by fighting and winning!) Research in this game isn't so much discovering new technologies civ-style but more building up your war infrastructure Dawn of War-style. With researchable upgrades, (like grenades for guardsmen) even beginning units have a role to play in the endgame. Units also gain XP up to 10 levels and a nice thing is kill XP is spread through nearby supporting units. Other than setting permanent alliances in the game setup, there is no diplomacy in this game. There isn't even city-capturing. You defeat your enemy by demolishing their capitol, which is heavily armored and has heavy defensive guns. In fact everything in this game has guns, even basic resource harvesting structures. The only victory besides total extermination is an optional story questline. Independent monsters are scary powerful in this game. Think Conquest of Elysium 4 powerful. And the AI is smart enough to retreat and heal heavily damaged units. You're going to be fighting a war before you even see the enemy. Aesthetics-wise it's the most professional-looking of the Slitherine 40K games, but it's still pretty bare-bones compared to modern standards. Like I said, a turn-based Dawn of War 1.

one of the very best 40k games ever.

I played the main campaign as Space Marines on medium difficulty and the next 20 hours were absolutely packed with intense back and forth battle lines, desperate last stands, retreats, panicked rebuilding and fortifying, counter attacks, exploration, mysteries and witnessing tragic last stands by my IG AI team member, (who got absolutely swamped by hundreds of Ork units an died as heroes for the emperor, only to buy me some time.) (setting up teams that outnumber you is the key here) The early game exploration part works well, mid game works well, and they even have an epic endgame showdown which worked really really well, imo. There is a bucketload of units, your heroes have psychic blast waves, massive force field shields, and and and. The AI did an impressive job by forming battle lines, pulling out their wounded units, and I even had them trick me, when I felt smart and sneaky and set up an ambush and it turned out they were waiting for me all along, concealed. hats off. All this might be a coincidence, cos i guess the AI is not that smart all in all, but the mechanics here work so well with the 40k lore. This game is brutal, desperate and epic. pros: + great unit animations, modelling and textures, + map is suitably warhammerish. + zero performace issues on a GTX670 (5 years old) + only one crash. cons: -no unit sounds! no voice over. nada. totally inacceptable. I dont buy the "this is not RTS" argument. at least a death comment or ANYTHING that makes them seem less "dead and static". And I dont buy the "its too expensive" argument either. I work in media myself; reasonable VO actors incl studio time and licensing cost less than one day for a designer freelancer. Whatever the reason this is missing: it must be added! - the elevation levels on the map are difficult to see. cliffs are a great strategic feature, but the map looks too flat. - a 40k game without chaos is also bordering absurd. I hope they throw this in soon. all in all: fantastic game! go get it :-)

Ok I guess

The game is decent, but it doesn't really have that many hours in it. Too bad you need a 11 small DLC's to get a full game. I guess if it was the full game I'd give it 3 stars, because, that might up the replayability. As it is, I am not going to buy 11 DLC's just to get a full game and I can't give more than 2 stars for a core game that feels more like a demo, than a real game.

Decent short term fun with some bugs

Pros: Good variety between factions, 40k looks, fun win condition if you follow the tasks given by the game Cons: Gameplay itself is not too deep, which reduces replayability drastically, research tree is more like a research line and it's just sad, neutrals on the map become irrelevant very fast, map terrain features are not many and it makes the map feel like just a grid sometimes. Additionally the game has horrendous stability issues and very annoying bugs, e.g. using some abilities crashes the game and using others does nothing other than the animation. Basically it's a fun little skirmish game in 40k with very limited replayability and a bunch of bugs, and I would even say it's somewhat overpriced.
