The mass demands it!!!

This is what I love about GOG: One day, System Shock 2 finally gets released, everyone goes crazy, but life doesn't sop there. Each week we get more and more games, one day you get to buy an old classic, the next day you'll be introduced to a brand new, exciting indie gem... and some days you bump into games like Ultimate Body Blows (it had about 9 votes on it's request page As far as I remember). Still, This unpredictibility is what makes GOG for me:) Anyway, on the game itself: There isn't much to say. The body blows "series" were two very average fighting games trying to capitalize on the StreetFighter craze of the time. Originally, they've been released on the Amiga, where they became quite popular for some reason. Soon they compiled the two games together, reworked the graphics a tad bit, and released on pc also, under the name of Ultimate Body Blows. It is a very "meh" gmae on every possible aspect. The graphics are okay, but the gameplay is unbalanced and clunky. the controls are a little stiff (a common problem with many pc fighters), and the fighters are pretty bland to be honest. You might want to buy it for the sake of nostalgia, but the price is a little too high for a game such as this. If you really want to play some budget, pc exlusive street fighter clone from the early 90's, I suggest grab Superfighter instead. That one's for free.

Only for Amiga nostalgics

Playing sure was fun twenty years ago, when playing the arcade blowkbusters such as Street Fighter II at home was but a dream. Now that this dream has come true, you have to face reality: Ultimaty Body Blows is just a pathetic game, with poorly drawn graphics and anti-charismatic characters. If you want a decent fighting game for PC, go check One Must Fall 2097.

Simplistic fighting game

Body Blows is a simple fighting game, which is both its strength and weakness. Let's go over the various points. The graphics are poor. There's really no way around it. The SFX and music is okay to good. It's retro, but you may enjoy it. The controls are pretty decent, although hit detection is a bit off. It's shallow, which both means you won't spend months mastering it, but it also means you can pick it up pretty quickly. It's definitely better for players that simply don't have much time for games. Each character has a very limited move set, and nothing is more simple to throw off than your special move. Ready for it? You hold down the button. None of that "left, right, right, punch, kick, left, three-quarter circle, kick, hold punch and kick, quarter circle" stuff here. You hold down the button and that's it. However, you can't really expect to spam special moves and little else. Each time you use it, the bar increases and requires you to hold the button for a longer period of time. Initially you can surprise your opponent with it or incorporate it into a beatdown, but after using it a few times, you need some distance or a stunned opponent before you can think of using it. I do like that. That said, character balance is poor. Some characters are better than others. Way better. Way, way better. To enjoy the game, you would have to find one that fits your skill level in order to avoid easy mode or constant losses. I guess that means that most players can find some challenge in the game, but honestly I suspect it's just poor design. Can I recommend the game? The answer is a hesitant yes. I would not buy it at full price, but it's worth looking into during a very good sale.

Marred by poor controls

I actually had a boxed copy of this game for the PC back in the day, and seeing the game here on GoG, I was eager to fire it back up. And man is it just as hard as I remember, this is one of those fighting games where the CPU controlled characters have a much easier time block and reacting to your moves. I think this is partly game design....but alot of it is the controls. I can see how the control scheme was designed with a single button joystick in mind. You have one button for attack, WER for the up/jump controls. SD for left and right. And ZXC for the down controls. The idea being you hold attack and press the a direction to do different attacks. The problem is not only are the characters clunky to control, but the pre defined keys are AWFUL. You can re-assign them in dosbox, but to be honest, it doesn't help much. The effects are of a quality you'd expect from a game of this era, with some characters speech being easy to understand and some having you say "Huh? What'd he say?" The music is really nice, but I found that the in game music differed to the music in the downloadable soundtrack. Overall, I would say steer clear of this game unless, like me, you have some nostalgia for the title, it just doesn't play well enough to be a game I could recommend. (And even with the nostalgia goggles on it's hard to recommend, it really does play that badly)

Not Team 17's best.

The controls, while wonky are serviceable, mimicking the Commodore Amiga's one action button setup. These cannot be redefined, which is hella lame. The difficulty, even on the lowest setting is cheap to the point of being completely unfair. It does have a large roster of characters, so two player won't get stale. The voice samples are heavily compressed, but the music is decent. Even typing your name into the high score is contrived. But if you enter "hardcore" as your name, you can go back and play the game with invincibility.
