Are you ready to take that burden?

One of the personal favorite RTS games of all time! Let me highlight a few important features: - Interesting story. Definitely not original but interesting nevertheless - Even if the mission is "destroy your opponents" there is enough background information to make it interesting - Most missions have more complicated objectives like preparing to defend your capital city (the upcoming army is really huge and it's not an easy mission), rescue a hostage, steal a magic book, consult the oracle (again, not that easy as you may think) and many more - Side quests which may turn out to be nearly indispensable - Excellent leveling system. Take care of your veteran units, they are much better than rookies. Train your heroes as much as possible - their experience is not lost from mission to mission! - Idle peasants will automatically join other nearby working peasant in his task. No more baby-sitting! - Three significantly different nations - Well designed difficulty system It's not the game without flaws, nations are not perfectly balanced if you plan to play with your friends. Some features and units are virtually useless. But nothing frustrating nor game-breaking. I recommend it to any RTS fan!

best worst rts ever

A friend of mine worked as the Supervisor in an elementary school computer room. We spent countless hours there playing this game under the guise of working on our science fair project. pros 3 distinct races unique for the time leveling system amazing midi music cons holy shit awful path finding ai who's idea of strategy is to send an unending single file line of troops at you

Good game, poor gog release

This is a really good game, but gog version doesn't make justice to it. It is basically a copy of Age Of Empires, if you have played AoE all is so familiar, the controls, UI, resources to collect, armies to build, enemies to defeat, walls and towers to raise, technologies to develop... Unfortunately there is also some frustration while playing it, especially on two things: pathfinding and AI. The pathfinding is bad. If you have 20 soldiers of the same type and you want to group to have a compact unit to engage the enemy, it's nearly impossible to do so, you have to select one by one your soldiers and try to group them. This is a big loss of time, and you CAN'T loose time on this game, you have to be really quick to be competitive. Add to this big flaw, that if there is some enemy near, your soldier(s) will try to catch him (sometimes even if you have halted them), resulting in a big mess. In this game would be great (and necessary) to put your archers behind your soldiers, use this kind of tactics, but it's nearly impossible to do this. Also the AI isn't the best, for example if they get out of resources, they send their peasants to explore and collect more, even if that means try to cross your lines and get destroyed again and again. The thing is that there was a nice version on the Spanish market, launched by FX Interactive, which patched and solved some of these problems (or at least minimized them). It included some nice expansions aswell (Gengis Khan, King Arthur, and the reigns of Magic - these expansions turned the game into a bit more-RPG, were really great). I've played lots of hours to these expansions 15 years ago, and they hadn't these flaws. There is no hint of where all these awesome content has lost. Hope they update it with this patches and campaings some day.

In its day a great RTS

When this game came out it was quite impressive looking, it combined alot of features that other games had, but it put it all in one package. Today it has some flaws as others mention, units in groups do not move with slowest, if they can they will move as fast as possible. path AI is about par for the day, but bad by today's standards. With the bad pointed out, where this game shines is the difficulty, As a RTS fanatic, this one proved to be smarter (or cheated more, the AI is set up well long before you are in most maps) then the average one of the day. Its not a Must have game, but if you love RTS games, its easily worth a look and play. It is one i have looked for over time and am happy to see on GOG.

Favorite RTS of all time.

I have been playing this game since 2000, I love it. I installed windows on my mac just to play this game. I wish I could get all my friends together to play this again, but sadly those days are long gone.
