You can’t remember anything. All you see is white around you. You hear a voice. You see a watch, swinging slowly in front of your eyes:

“I know you think everything is alright, but tell me, how come you can’t even remember her name?”

The Shattering places you in the mind of John Evans, where you struggle to piece together the fragments of your past and present. Not remembering is one thing, but what happens when your mind leads you down the twisting path of fake memories in order to shelter you from the truth?

Follow the voice of the Doctor as it guides you deeper into your mind, and experience the key moments of John’s life that define and shape him. Discover the truth, shatter the lies, find out what happened to John… and remember her name.

The Shattering is a first-person, story-driven, psychological thriller. It’s defining features are the dynamic environments, beautiful aesthetic and intriguing story. There are no failure conditions in The Shattering, nor complicated puzzles. The gameplay is meant to submerge you in the mind of John, as you take each step forward into the twisted mystery of what happened. A serene and emotionally charged soundtrack give every moment life, while the visuals delight at every corner.

A rich and constantly evolving world taking place in the mind of John, where there are no limits or rules.

Beautiful and rich realistic environments painted with a pristine white aesthetic provide a original scenery that stands apart.

An intriguing story split into 4 acts that pieces together knowledge of the past and understanding of the present as you progress.

A sublime, gripping and intense original score composed for the story of The Shattering breathes live into each moment.

The Shattering is a work of passion coming from a small group of 5 close friends lead by Marta Szymanska. Super Sexy Software started in spirit in 2013, when the first echoes of The Shattering started to take form. The project began from studying the contrast of white and black in horror and culture. The core theme draws on the premise that horrors and fear can be achieved through embracing white and the absence of information, rather than darkness and the obvious, though unseen, enemy.

Over various iterations, the game took shape and the decision was made to work on it in every spare moment that could be found. With members of the team residing in Poland, France and Switzerland, they grew in experience and efficiency as the true spirit of the studio was born. As the game progressed, the developers and Deck13 met at a networking event and the synergy between the companies resonated immediately. A publisher was found, and all the ingredients to finish The Shattering were ready.

With the full development spanning multiple years, births and deaths, tears and laughter, the only joy greater than that of the journey together as one team and family, is the joy of seeing The Shattering take shape and be played by people around the world. We’d like to thank you, the player, for taking interest in our passion. We hope our story can echo out and reach gamers around the world.

Very short, but also very intense

I'm not sure, if the term <> does any justice to this title. Because if you look at the game, what you do is ... walking. There is not much more interaction than clicking on the right objects. But I enjoyed this game SOOO MUCH. The tension rises with every hour of this game. With every minute you become more and more intrigued with the story and what's actually going on. Without any spoiler I have to say, I liked the part with the orphanage best. My heart almost broke experiencing what many pour souls have to go through in their early childhood days when being bullied. Amazing, how real it feels. All the mechanics in this game do a perfect job, the artstyle is simplistic, but gorgeous. It delivers a certain distance with it's cold colors, perfect fit to the topic. The narrator/therapist has a good voice acting and the sound ambiance in combination with the fantastic level design and animation just add up to an amazing experience. If you don't like <> you might think, you paid too much... I finished this title in approximatelly 5 hours, maybe less. But this were 5 hours of great entertainment. I still got goose bumps. So if you like games like Blackwood Crossing, this is something for you.

Not enough thought to be though provokin

WARNING! The GOG release of the game will not work past halfway through the game in random systems! I and many people already tried contacting the devs and posting on the forums, but they just don't care. The game is barely 3 hours long, it tries to tell a story about a man who is seeing a therapist about something that gave him PTSD using a sort of abstract storytelling, basically a minimalistic walking simulator where everything is white, not too much happens and the game is not clear on how to advance the story, leading you to clicking everywhere like crazy until something happens and the game decides to continue, without this it would probably be 1 hour. Also the stuff that happens to him is not that bad imo, get this on sale if you must play it and willing to risk throwing your money away if you are one of the many unlucky people this game doesn't work for.

It is short but good and well worth it

Today many gamers are just asking about how much playtime a game has to offer and if you ask me, that is the wrong thing to ask when it comes to the question whether a game is worth its price or not. Much more important in my opinion is the question how much you will enjoy the game. It's not really difficult to drag a game to get as much playtime as possible - the art lies in making each second enjoyable. That is what "The Shattering" is doing. If you like surreal and artsy settings in which everything can happen and if you like mystery and maybe even are interested a bit in psychology ... if you love movies like "Stay" or "Jacobs Ladder" then you will enjoy every single second of "The Shattering" since it breathes the same air. From the first second on I really enjoyed everything "The Shattering" had to offer: The great art, the love for details, the intelligent and unusual way of narration and the fact that everything could happen anytime. This was like a rollercoaster ride and while playing it I was constantly trying to piece the puzzle together. It was a great ride and now after my 5 hours of pure enjoyment I would buy it again, because it is that good and technically so well done. The free DLC they just added now also gives you the option to access each chapter of the game directly, listen to the complete soundtrack and some developer commentaries (which are also subtitled in different languages btw). To unlock the developer commentaries you will have to solve some puzzles just like in the game ... so it is additional playtime as well which the devs are giving away for free. I also enjoyed playing this DLC as well. For those of you who are more into story and atmosphere than challenges I cannot recommend this high enough.

Interesting, not game changing

It's difficult to stand out among the army of horror walking simulators. As of late, RedCandleGames' "Devotion", Wired Productions' "The Town of Light", most of Bloober Teams' masterpieces ("Layers of Fear" I and II, Observer: System Redux), Illusion Ray' Studios"The Beast Inside" or Sadsquare Studio's "Visage" have tried to add different kinds of layers or tones to violence, abuse, horror and pain from a first person perspective. Sometimes they choose a more adventurous and scary approach, sometimes they prefer to focus on studying the origins of personal trauma. A big budget game like "Outlast 2" tried to do both of them, with uneven results. Falling into the "personal description and horror" side of the equation,"The shattering" still offers some good, welcome surprises. Compared to games produced and designed by big budget companies, "The Shattering" could be seen as basic and unrefined in terms of visuals and gameplay. However, some of its scenes / levels are incredibly satisfying because of their convincing portrait of violence and damaged emotions. The game doesn't always succeed, sometimes verging into contrived territory. But when it gets it right, it really shines. Some chapters are outstanding nightmares, reminding me the most brilliant bits of "Layers of fear: Inheritance", "Visage" and "Devotion". In terms of gameplay, there isn't much to do, bar the occasional puzzle, but to unravel what went wrong in somebody's life. And boy, SO MANY THINGS WENT WRONG. Last but not least, being patient and thorough really makes a difference in "The shattering", cause the more you see, the more you know, the more you understand, the more you enjoy the pain. I don't think it is up there with the greatest walk sims (I'll always prefer "Layers of fear I & II" or "What remains of Edith Finch?") but it's enjoyable by itself. Can't wait to play its new DLC.

Short, but very, very Intense

The Game is a very well done "walking simulator" with some twists and an awesome story about a writer after a breakdown. Should be played by fans of the genre!
