LEAD THE RESISTANCE
A Twisted Fairy Tale
Full of mystical creatures from faraway lands, experience an expansive fantasy story through the vibrant world of Thra, where innocent Gelfling lives are consumed for their essence by the nefarious Skeksis. Unite the Gelfling tribes and drive the rebellion to success, or defeat...
Strategic Tactical Battles
Decades of developer experience building strategy games brings multi-layered, tactical role-playing game combat. Units can be customized for specific fights with unique gear and varied abilities across an expansive job system. Use guile, planning, and cunning to overcome superior foes.
Dynamic Environments
Thra is full of unpredictable environments, from arid deserts to lush forests, as dangerous as they are beautiful. Dynamic events on the battlefield may create opportunities or pose additional complications, necessitating rapid changes in strategy.
It's pretty good. A little slow at first, I was worried it was gonna suck, but it's a decent game for 22 bones. Not as deep and strategic as more classic tactic games, perhaps a little kid friendly, but that's to be expected with a Jim Henson series. All in all, it's a fun little tromp through the Dark Crystal universe, although, I was hoping they would expand upon the universe a little more. So far it's followed the plot of the series to a T... So if you haven't watched the Netflix series yet, this will kinda spoil the story for you.
I think it's worth the humble amount of moohlah they're asking if you're a fan
Having played Final Fantasy Tactics to death (then having revived it repeatedly and played it back to death), I've felt the itch to find a good new tactics game for the last several years. While fans of the genre often recommend going back and playing games from 20 years ago, I personally can't get back into 16 / 32-bit era graphics. Many newer games haven't quite pulled me in, and the plethora of freemium mobile gacha 'tactics' games has disappointed, to say the least.
Here, finally, is a game that (1) isn't mobile garbage and (2) strikes the right balance of theme and game-play. Like many adults of my generation, Dark Crystal struck a chord and remains etched into my psyche such that the new series was a welcome mix of nostalgia and world-building (as well as an entertaining story). To hear that the series had launched so specific a game as a tactical RPG (rather than a simple adventure game or even a Telltale-type story game) was quite a positive surprise.
To break the game down into pluses and minuses, the classes, combat options, and tiered / tiled battle maps are very satisfying and make for interesting and, often, strategic battles. One minus would be that some of the jobs/classes (including two of the three tier 3 jobs) feel underwhelming compared to others. Some basic number re-balancing could help with that, but I often feel like the few jobs I've been developing are better than the options I've been able to unlock later (not to mention the fizzgigs and podlings feeling less useful than the gelflings' job options). The graphics are nothing to write home about, but they fit the genre and the theme nicely (as above, obviously better than PSX or Game Boy Advanced graphics). The menu selection system could be improved, and implementing a means of selling unused equipment would also be a welcome addition, but the UI works alright and the gear options seem meaningful enough.
For the price ($20), this is well worth buying for tactical RPG fans.
Story: I've only watched the first episode of the show, but this seems to contain spoilers. The story is told comic panel style, after certain missions.
Gameplay: Closest match I would say would be Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift. Encounters tend to be 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5. Gelflings have a 3 basic job types, each of those has 2 sub jobs, and there are 3 prestige jobs, for a total of 12 different jobs. Fizzgigs each have their own job, while the podling has 5 different jobs to choose from. Challenge encounters basically let you replay a map with generic enemies, to continue to level your characters or to level characters that you don't normally use.
The game looks could be better I think, but well enough. The movements and camera work well. You follow the storyline of the Netflix series. So if you haven't seen it yet, you might want to do that first. The game is kind of a turn based story mode adventure. If you loved the series and like turn based games, take a look at it.
Although this is not a bad game by any means, there's also nothing I haven't seen before, if your a fan of the series, then you have an edge on us who hasn't seen it, it's based on the series and graphics wise it's a nice looking game the basic flow of the game is very slow at first, but does get more challenging later, and if you don't know the series you may be a bit confused on the story. It's a fun game and if your a fan of the series there's a lot to live about it but if your like me and play a lot of srpgs then there is nothing new that I haven't seen a thousand times not bad but not great either.
