Description

No one is forced to join a cult. It welcomes you. It understands you. It envelops you until the words become more than truth - they make you whole.

In the late 1970s, the charismatic Isaac and Rebecca Walker lead the Collective Justice Mission. Labeled radicals and feeling persecuted by the US government, they relocate their followers to the one place they believe they can create a socialist utopia: the jungles of South America. There they build Freedom Town. But relatives left behind in the US become worried: what exactly is going on at this compound in the jungle?

  • Combines unique narrative with tight top-down action-infiltration gameplay in an open-ended environment.
  • Play how you want - you can avoid detection completely, take on the guards using non-lethal methods, or kill anyone who gets in your way.
  • Fully voiced game, starring Ellen McLain (best known as GLaDOS in Portal) and John Patrick Lowrie (the Sniper from Team Fortress 2) as the intense Rebecca and Isaac Walker.
  • Soak up the story through the town PA system, where the preachers share their dogma and beliefs.
  • Find more than 100 documents and letters scattered around camp which clue you into the true nature of Freedom Town in this particular game.
  • Every playthrough offers changing gameplay scenarios and story elements, with different character personalities and a shifting narrative told through investigation and action.
  • Live with the consequences of your choices through many possible endings.

How dangerous are the Walkers? Who are your allies and enemies? How far will you go to uncover the truth and save these people?

Simplistic and repetitive

The game sounded promising but for the price is it faaaar too simplistic and offers limited replayability regardless of what the description says. The guards are exceedingly simplistic and not very bright, basically nothing that happens directly outside their cone of sight is detected. At the same time they can move in unbelievably annoying and incoherent ways, and see you in buildings when it makes no sense for them to do so, and vice versa. You can carry corpses at ordinary running speed, so killing and dragging someone away within the view of another guard is easy. The alarms system makes basically no sense. The leaders upon hearing an alarm do not seem to go into lock down or anything similar. The plot element changes are interesting but far too surface level. You can see the settlers doing settler things but you can't really interact with them in any meaningful way, you can basically only interact with select characters whose personalities change slightly in each playthrough. Having some guy tell you to hand over your guns every time you want to talk to him in every single playthrough gets tiring real fast. The loudspeakers spamming propaganda at you with quips from the leaders is a nice touch, but even by the second playthrough you are aware of the severely limited number of lines that have been recorded, and when they differ by one or two lines you can already work out the current personality types of the leaders and what you must do quite quickly. tl;dr there is almost no purpose to interacting with the landscape or taking in the atmosphere. Loot everything for ammo and gear, find Alex, work out his opinion, act based on upon opinion, win condition met. Good ideas over-simplistically implemented.

Cool concept, poor execution

I really wanted to like this game. The story and concept was very original. Unfortunately, the game suffers from one of the most unacceptable flaws a stealth game can have: wonky controls. I've played some of the most punishing stealth games from Death to Spies to The Saboteur, and I don't mind a stealth game with brutal difficulty. But even on the easiest level, CitD makes it difficult to perform even the most basic tasks, like walking up a flight of stairs. Both mouse and keyboard controls are plagued by this problem. Remapping some keys and splitting some functions would help, but mostly it's a question of visibility cones and control issues. You actually have a better chance running through some areas pell mell than you do sneaking properly through an area in disguise. Hopefully future patches will address these issues and make the game what it could be, but until then better to give this one a pass.

Nearly unique

"The Church in the Darkness" is a top-down sneak/shoot 'em up about going into a dangerous and unknown situation and trying to keep your head. While the compound where the game takes place is clearly modelled off of The People's Temple, the variable nature of the major characters' sanities, drives, purposes, and interdependencies / relationships means that you shouldn't go into a given game assuming the leader is Jim Jones and imminent disaster is just around the corner. You are an intruder so they will react negatively to your presence, but they could all be reasonable people and legit true believers. There might not be anyone 'crazy' or meth'ed out. Or maybe the one or two who are don't really have any authority. The kid you're sent in to rescue might want to stay - how bad does it need to be to justify extracting him anyway? Or how good does it need to be to ignore his family's pleading and leave him to the future he has chosen (and is choosing)? Maybe you don't even want to leave, yourself? Or, maybe, it's a literal Hell on Earth situation, where 'going loud' and breaking the security apparatus by slaughtering anyone armed before the Flavor-Aid gets passed around might just save lives. If you're willing to engage at that level - needing to pass something like a real in-the-moment assessment of the cult instead of relying on Video Game violence-justified-through-assigned-antagonist-status 'Blood Templar' style play - if you can engage on that level, proactively reassessing how much of a spanner in the works you ought to be, then the relatively short game is worth replaying a couple of times. Death is quick if you get in over your head, but the scenario is short. Lots of unlocks to carry into future playthroughs. It's not AAA by any stretch, but a good addition to the 'late 90s/early 00s overhead shooter' genre (BOFH, TK Killers, Hotline Miami, Nocturn [the other one]) with MG:S inspired 'Infiltration' gameplay. A "Top 500" video game, probably.
