My favorite 2021 release

While I can't say that I found the story of Stonefly exceptional, I liked virtually every other element of the game. I loved the loop of collecting resources, then developing new abilities and upgrading my ship. I liked the concept, a world in which humans are smaller than insects and pilot ships that resemble them. I liked the music, which makes the world feel all the more enchanting, and the graphical style, which reminded me of children's author Eric Carle (of Very Hungry Caterpillar fame). More than anything, though, I loved the combat. While a friend of mind commented on how frantic it could be (which is certainly the case), I found it immensely satisfying to gain competency here. Often when I was having problems, I'd realize that I'd been neglecting an ability that would turn out to be a game-changer. I also found the way that your ship "blows" hostile bugs off of leaves and logs to eliminate them to be satisfying in a way that simply killing them wouldn't be. I was constantly luring or pulling enemies to the sides of the arena, and would punctuate the demise of more irritating foes with a hearty "get the fuck out of here!" Stonefly is an outstanding ARPG, and well-worth your time if you have a soft spot for the genre.

Beautiful style marred by subpar gmeplay

It's a beautiful game with truly unique visual style well executed done with much attention to details and love. But while there are games that will do fine with just that feature most of the times games require well, gameplay and preferably a fun one. And while this game is beautiful for sure it's gameplay isn't so much. Much like the studio's previous game, Creature In The Well this particular game has an interesting idea at it's core that wasn't given much attention other than more or less it's existence. You play as a mechanical mecha-bug in a micro-world not unilke "Honey I've shrink our kids" exploring tall grass, tree branches and rocky shores while gathering resources needed to ungrage your mecha-bug and fighting bugs, slugs and other creatures living in that (micro-) world. The fighting itself is mostly takes form of arena battles where you are trapped in a hemisphere while deflecting waves of enemies. And fighting is, by far, is the weakest part of the game, It's not fun, it's tedious, it's unintuitive and repetitive. It's over-complicated and too easy at the same time as while you have dozens of abilities to use what you actually do is spamming one basic attack and occasionally heal yourself up until there would be no enemies left. Exploring on the other hand is mostly fun and meditating experience with just a right tempo and beautiful visuals and wonderful music to set the mood. The handcrafted nature of levels instead of proceduraly generated mazes from Creature In The Well helps alot too. All in all it's a fine game but it's not a fun one with a jarring story, boring and lackluster combat and occasional but irritating bugs here and there(sorry not sorry) that broke immersion.

Beautiful Concept, weird gameplay

An interesting concept and a amazing art style, like their previous game; Creature in the well. I really enjoy the game. Is not perfect, like the movement that feels weird sometimes and the navigation is something that go against you here and there. However, the game have some "flaws" that can kickout a lot of people. As I mention the movement of the game is "weird", if the game have a extended plane move in 3 dimensions wasnt a deal but with small plataforms with diferent heights the movement can be akward and stressful, falling a lot of time into nothing. The combat is a really interesting concept, with a kind of "sumo" or "Smash Bros" mechanic, because you have to get out of the ring the foes. Besides you can improve your vehicle with new movement and combat abilities. The game really need voice acting, because you have to chooose: play the game or read de dialogues, and with that polish in the animations and face expresions is a wasted oportunity. the histoty is simple but effective but the final fight its feels... meh. I really like this game and I enjoy every moment, even with all the flaws and details so I thing this is something that everyone have to play once at least.
