Description
Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy is an original 3rd person action-adventure inspired by the mythology of ancient Egypt. Travelling the world via magical portals to foil the evil plans of Set. Sphinx's Journey will require all his wits, agility, and special powers. He will also rely on his reluctant hero friend, The Mummy, to help when being inconspicuous is the only solution. By finding the stolen magical crowns of Egypt, Sphinx can stop Set and save the world.

An ancient Egyptian Universal Empire once joined several worlds through Solar Disc portals. The old empire was destroyed and the civilizations in each world have suffered different fates, some of them have continued contact and others have lost it. These worlds have been separated for such a long time that many of them would not recognize each other.

The legend says that two forces, one negative, one positive, are trying to recover the old empire and all of its crowns again. But we know very little about these forces or if they really exist. Other people are simply trying to understand what happened and the real nature of each world. Meanwhile each world continues with it’s own way and history.

Recently, strange things have been happening… News is received from many places that problems are appearing; the normally peaceful villages are now at war, odd monsters appear in valleys where there was once placid ecology... Nobody knows why…

The chain of communication between the worlds remains partially abandoned, partially destroyed and so unstable that to use it is a sure way to cause even more problems and dangers. A long time ago the Great Wall in Heliopolis was built to protect the civilians. Many people have used the portals but disappeared without trace. For this reason you never know how you will be received in any of the locations or if you will get anywhere at all.
  • Use Sphinx and his increasing array of skills to face deadly mythical monsters while avoiding perilous traps with acrobatic ease. Weaken enemies and use capture beetles to store and unleash their abilities at will.
  • Take control the Mummy when strength & combat skills aren't needed — use the Mummy's stealth and unconventional antics to avoid enemies, solve puzzles and sabotage right under the enemy's nose.
  • Interact with hundreds of unique and imaginative creatures, enemies and allies
  • Fantastic graphics bring this mythical world based on Egyptian legends to life
  • Totally immersive storyline and epic gameplay

Really flawed port

A lot of people reviewed the Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy they played on consoles. I, too, played this game way back when, on the Nintendo Gamecube and, yes, it is one of the best titles that console had to offer, sadly extremely underrated and overlooked. The thing is, while this THQ Nordic PC port *is*, in essence, the same game, it's a pretty lousy port, and I truly hope they address some of the issues the game has, right now, with a patch -- sooner, rather than later. I know 3D platformers are best played with a controller, but at least they're somewhat playable with keyboard and mouse. This port, sadly, has very unintuitive keyboard controls (action buttons are Esc, TAB, F and Space, and they can't be remapped), while mouse controls the camera with no context sensitive or attack button mapped to the mouse buttons. I only played through the tutorial areas of both Sphinx and Mummy, it didn't take me too long, but it's enough to see how bad this port is. They added some graphical bells and whistles, but, to be fair, I would prefer to play it in 800x600 looking like it originally did, with no anti-aliasing, no multisampling and no option to adjust field of view, since it already looked great as it did back in the day, and have them focus on a *proper* intuitive control scheme for the keyboard and mouse. Not to mention the sound is all glitchy, though that may be just on my end -- a lot of times, sound effects will keep looping until I leave an area or a cutscene starts, just to be replaced by another loop of different sets of sound effects. I can still play the game, it's still as charming as it ever was, but the gameplay didn't translate well to PC, especially with such a lazy team doing the porting. Play this with a controller, if you have one, stay away from it if you only have a keyboard and a mouse. The game gets four stars from me because I loved the original console release. This port, however, would have deserved two stars, without nostalgia weighing in.

So worth it!

Upon noticing this game was available on GOG is was excited. Looking at other reviews I became skeptical. Like others I played this years ago on consoles (xbox/ps2) .. do I want to play it again on the PC.. YES!!.. and how glad to have made the purchase. So, its an old game and the graphics may not be out of this world but they are loads better than on ps2 (yes I actually compared), visually so much clearer. I turned the antialiasing and multisampling on max and chose widescreen. Works perfectly, smooth movements using a controller, adjustments the vertical/horizontal and sound can be changed.

Good port, flawed game

It's AWESOME that more GameCube/PS2 era platformers are being ported to PC. This game, in many ways, have lots of the cool aspects of those games It also has some of the absolute worst aspects, which is 1. save points miles apart, and 2. Super crap unnecessary combat Those two things combined, means that instead of just focusing on the nice movement and puzzles, you have to slog through extremely samey dull fights, that nonetheless have a high chance of killing you and forcing you to redo a huge section. Add to that that animations, cutscenes and hey, simply traversing the huge maps are all unskippable and very long, and it all just starts to grate. Which is a shame, as especially the puzzley segments as a mummy are pretty fun and clever, with some nice surprises I'm not gonna spoil. Simply adding the option to turn on frequent checkpoints or manual saves wherever (which should be toggleable of course for purists) would make this a way smoother experience. If you own a gamepad, and you want to relive the exact game you played this is a 5/5. As someone without nostalgia for this particular title, it's 3 stars judging this as a game that came out today.

A GameCube gem in 1440p !

I've just finished the game today, in around 20 hours, trying to get all the golden ankhs before defeating the final boss. The game is brilliant, no too long, not to hard, and very enjoyable with this advanced version remastered (in 1440p for me, just amazing). What I liked the most is the two playable characters, one pure jumper and fighter, the second one (the mummy) more in sneaking and puzzling. A great (not so) old game, typical of this era (Starfox Adventures, Rare productions, etc.). You could buy it blind faith !
