Description
The Seal of Evil story is set in the twilight years of the Warring States period of Chinese history (476 ? 206 BC). This turbulent time marks the disintegration of the longest lived of all imperial dynasties, the Zhou. Out of the strife and chaos emerges a nobleman possessed of an indomitable spirit and an uncompromising vision of the future: Ying Zheng, ruler of the Qin state. He will stop at nothing to reunite the disparate Chinese kingdoms. Combining ancient legends and mythic storytelling with historical fact, Seal of Evil sets the stage for an epic adventure wherein the players struggle to thwart the Qin invasion of their peaceful homeland, East Baiyue. Ferocious beasts, merciless enemy soldiers, wicked bandits, and terrifying supernatural foes are hazards they must face in order to achieve this goal. There is still hope for them, however, for along the way they will also make many friends and acquire powerful weapons and equipment. And armed with mighty elemental magic, they may yet come face to face with the very Gods themselves.

Cute, Strange, but atmospheric!

This is an odd little game but clearly had a lot of care poured into it. The first thing that will hit you is the voice acting which is legendarily bad, but it's only in cutscenes and most of the dialogue isn't poorly translated thankfully with a lot of nuance. The other interesting thing: you don't pick a character. This is a Diablo game from the perspective of one person, a woman named Lan Wei, although you can find companions to follow you into battle and on your adventures. This is much less a hack and slash game as it is an action RPG with a lot of emphasis on varied quests for NPCs and just walking around enjoying the atmosphere and talking to the inhabitants. Everyone seems to have a little story which even Diablo can't claim to often. For all the voice acting might tug you out, the charming graphics and interactions can pull you in. This is NOT a thrill a minute game although thankfully the combat systems are fairly easy to understand. You need to look around, interpret clues, talk to everyone you see. This actually reminded me more of Dark Earth than an ARG: a world to explore more than wandering mobs to crush for gold and upgrades. It sits uneasily in the gap between action and roleplaying, but the unique setting and clear care than went into this game won me over. Also you can set the voices to Japanese for better performances.

At long last

This game is one of my childhood gems. It has been on my list of "old games to experience again" list for a very long time. Time to remove that entry. I remember that this game started with a solid story with emotional elements, continued with endless and most of the time frustrating battles, and ended with another memorable piece of story. I still remember how I felt after the game ended. Emotional like in the beginning. I agree with Bloodrunsclear's review, well put. I deduct one star due to combat implementation. I'm not sure what could be better but it definitely had its flaws, mainly imbalance.

Good old chinese arpg

I pick SOE back then out of curiosity after played Sacred but oh boy it did better unexpectedly. First of all, you can pause in game, not "pause but you can't do anything with the characters" but pause like KOTOR and Mass Effect where you can cast spell like buff, debuff, heal, or AOE or drinking potions. You can also craft here to create and upgrade the equipment and also create potions. The story is one of better than other ARPG, some action we did or quest that we didn't do will affecting the ending, it's like playing JRPG but not turn based. The elements like water defeat fire defeat wood defeat earth defeat metal cycle also gave a nice touch, the elements also affecting the equipment that support each other, like water shoes strengthen wood armor. And then the bad, skill must be obtained throughout the story and the skill's final upgrade must be chose only one in each character. the english voice character is bad, thankfully GOG version has chinese one that is better. 80% music in this game is also bad, problem is music and voice acting have the same slider in option. The enemies didn't scale with character's level, but level's progression is slow so maybe it doesn't matter much anyway. Speaking about character, you can only play 5 characters and class, no hybrid class that you can combine, it's fixed because of the main story in this game. I still playing this game, and I glad it's in GOG now. Because ARPG need something like a good story and gameplay, and not everything about good graphics IMHO.

Thanks.

This game is a loose and open sequel of Prince of Qin. Super fun hack'n'slash. The first game is more real time with pause, about the whole party power. This is more a Divine Divinity style. Fun to play, very fun, there was even a online mmo of this game. Keep in mind everything is raw translated from chinese, giving a very amateur voice acting, and all the translated text is more Wuxia oriented than western rpg fantasy we might be used to.
