OK-ish short game, nothing special

First of all, the game is a bit short, I've finished it in > 2 hours. There are 8 tressures to collect and 3 bosses to kill (and that is very easy). At the beginning you will need to adapt to its clunky controls and weird system where you need to make sure your air or health levels don't go to zero, and they both go quickly. That is, you only have few hits before death (or just one if you hit certain enemies), and there are items (hearts) that regenerate health, but you need to be strategic about using them, since there are not many of them. For not dying because of air shortage you just need to time well your ventures, to be sure that you can go back in enough time to the nearest air pocket generator thing. Other items are bombs, but I didn't use them much since they can hurt you, they are just too random for me, but I might have used them wrong. There are also power-ups (or more precisely one type of them) that doubles your fire power and makes your faster, but I don't think I have seen it more than once per map, and it goes away after some time (or simply put just enough to get back to your air pocket generator). As for enemies, they have clear patterns and should not cause much problems, well maybe except sharks (I have no idea how to kill them without them hitting me not depending on luck or bombs). Level design is OK-ish, but it looks like developers have given up after level with 3rd tressure, first levels are most complex and the rest is a mix between easy levels with simple design or slightly more complex ones. As for me, the 3rd level was the hardest to beat, I might have spent there nearly half of my playtime, just because you need to be very strategic about your resources. In conclusion: Unless you are fan of this kind of games, you are nostalgic about this one, or want to check this game for historical understanding, there is not much content to enjoy. There are far better games to play and most importantly longer ones, so my final rating is: meh.

Excellent Game (Wish It Was HD)

Apogee made some of the best games back in the early 90's, but after playing the remastered versions of Secret Agent, Crystal Caves and Monster Bash, I can't help thinking that this game is in desperate need of a remaster. While I do agree that the game is a bit short, I strongly believe that if Emberheart remastered this game in the same fashion as the other Apogee classics, I don't see why they couldn't add on a few extra stages. That being said, it's well worth a try in it's original form. Highly recommended!
