Description

Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

It is designed around the idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.

Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.

GAMEPLAY FEATURES

COHESIVE "LIVED-IN" WORLD
Scorn takes place in an open-ended world with different interconnected regions. Each region is a maze-like structure with various rooms and paths to discover. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open - the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.

FULL BODY AWARENESS
Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with the world is realistic - objects are picked up with your hands (instead of just floating in midair), machines and instruments are operated by grabbing the controls, etc.

INVENTORY AND AMMO MANAGEMENT
Your loadout is defined and limited. This plays a big role in keeping the player in an even greater state of awareness throughout the whole game. Players will have to think about when to fight and when to take cover and how their actions affect the world around them. Different play styles will be needed to advance.

Tough one to review

Hard to review this as a game. In summary it is a short artistic surreal horror, gore game that is heavily influenced by HR Giger's art. So much so that the whole game is basically like being inside his paintings, then whatever gameplay elements are added to make it a game feel a bit like an afterthought. (it's not scary, just horror, as in twisted, weird, etc) The artistic design is definitely the high point if you like surrealism, hypersexual imagery, aliens and Giger's art. The story, or whatever you make out of it is kind of like surreal, uneasy, makes you feel bad kinda story and at the same time feels like a triumph of nature over machine or something like that. But there really isn't much of a story in the traditional sense. As for gameplay, this is the low point. It's a first person walking, getting lost and puzzle solving sim. Then it adds first person shooter into the mix. However, the action is very hit or miss, I'd say it's quite frustrating. The exploration is cool when it's clear where to go, but there are areas where I wanted to pull my hair out of frustration. The mechanics where you do anything in the game is also slow, repetitive and highly frustrating. I can't easily recommend it. I feel like it's a very obscure piece of fiction that I'm proud to put behind me, I don't regret playing it, but it took some willpower to go through the 4-5 hours campaign and I am sure a lot of people are not going to have the patience or the interest of just playing this kind of game. TLDR It's a frustrating game with an interesting surreal world that might intrigue you or you might hate it outright.

A gorgeous game, but poor one.

I really wanted to enjoy this game, it is an artistic masterpiece and the Geiger/Beksinski inspiration is rendered pretty much flawlessly and it is something to behold. Actually playing it though is an onslaught of frustration and tedium. The game is structured in a linear fashion presenting a mix of puzzles and combat to provide meat to the wandering through decaying halls. The puzzles are the better of the two gameplay styles, though they cause problems of their own; each puzzle takes the form of a simple logic test, move the boxes to bring the correct one to a certain point or press the buttons until they all light up are the most common. But while a few have a satisfying context to exist, such as parts of the mechanism are broken meaning youneed to manouver around them, most of them exist on a panel to be interacted with and seem to exist for the sake of being there. In a game where you are intended to immerse yourself in a supposedly once-lived-in world, these puzzles conflict with any sense of logic and fell videogamey. The combat is just terrible. The guns feel OK at best and the melee weapon is just annoying to use. Every so often when killing an enemy in melee your weapon will get stuck in their corpse and you will enter a 10 second where you shake it free, there are only a couple of animations per enemy and you'll see each many times during your playthrough, to add insult to injury the immersion this was supposed to add to is broken if this occurs amidst other foes as they all stop and wait while you shake a corpse about. The three enemies are similarly uninteresting, they all take the form of a shambling fleshy mass that either hits you up close or vomits pain at you. None of them are hard to kite around corners, and that will be your primary means of engagement, though the large melee-only one is capable of comboing you against a wall. Add to this that the asking price is £32 for a five hour game, and you have an utter mess on your hands.

Worth the wait

Definitely a game for a niche audience, but it fills that niche well. Creepy and disturbing as all hell. It's not a shooter or a jump scare game. It is almost a playable piece of art. Recommended.

It looks great, but the combat ruins it

I really want to like this game. The visuals and atmosphere is amazing, they really make you feel like you're in a dying world. There are many scenes that look like something out of a painting. The puzzles while challenging are fair. However its the combat that really ruins this game for me, possible spoilers ahead. The guns look great but do not feel good to use, they really make me want a game as a soldier fighting with these living guns. The reloading and switching guns look amazing, but why are they so weak, its a gun they are meat to kill what kinda of a civilization would make something sobad at that. The poking gun is annoying you need to be on top of enemies so if you miss they are going to spit acid on you. The projectile guns feel like you would be better throwing the bullets at the enemies rather than shooting, they require you to empty half you clip into a single guy. Bullets and heath are extremely rare so any group of enemies will leave you low on either health, ammo or both. I would be ok with this if you could avoid enemies but they spawn surrounding you or in a narrow hallway. This game doesnt have a dodge button only a walk slightly faster sprint. The enemies also look uninspiring and weak like one of the smaller ones look like a plucked chicken. I really think this game would be impoved with either stronger guns, less bullet sponge enemies, or just remove combat all together. The animations, feel, sound, and everything else is so good, but the combat really just ruins it for me.

Great atmosphere - bad gameplay

I really wanted to love the game, but there isn't any good gameplay. The fights are getting on my nerves. The puzzles are annoying. I would rather love this game with a god mode as an option or a truly walk simulator so I can enjoy the atmosphere and move freely inside this alien like world. Please creators, add a walking simulator or a god mode option to the game and give me a part two with more answers/questions to this brilliant universe you created. And by the way, please add an VR-option.
