Who Dares Wins

The Special Air Service, or S.A.S., is a highly classified elite special forces unit with a stunning array of specialized combat and reconnaissance capabilities. They are tactical experts called in to handle the most difficult missions where the odds of success are considered remote under even the most optimistic assessment. Now, they’re being summoned to complete five new counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and search and destroy missions under your command!

Sabre Team is an isometric squad-level turn-based infiltration simulation developed by Krisalis Software Ltd. that lets you assemble and take command of a Sabre Team unit of four hand-picked elite S.A.S. agents as they confront delicate and dangerous scenarios involving terrorist threats and hostage situations. Planning ahead and skillful improvisation in the heat of battle are necessary when one wrong move can mean the difference between success and failure. Put your strategic leadership to the test and achieve victory before your enemies even know what hit them.

  • Dive into five harrowing missions, including an embassy siege, hostage rescues, and search and destroy missions.
  • Assemble your elite four-member team, selecting each member with the right stats, experience, and specialties for the job.
  • Customize each squad member’s loadout before each mission, including various types of weapons, grenades, and armor modeled after equipment used by the real-life S.A.S.
  • Listen to a voiced briefing before each mission and get a closer look at events during the missions with cutscene artwork.
  • Test your mettle against terrorists and opposing forces who act intelligently to counter your actions.

Turn Based Tactical Strategy game

I played this game almost exclusively on the Atari ST. Very similar version to the DOS one, with differences mainly in the music and graphics, but not enough to matter. Having said that, this appears to be the CDROM version of the PC version, so it has better overall presentation. The game was never an impressive looking game, but it was better than average for the genre. In terms of gameplay, you have 5 missions to complete with a limited pool of available soldiers and limited number of weapons/accessories you can use for each mission. If a soldier (or more) die, they are not available to pick for the next mission, etc. While this strategy/business theme is not exactly UFO Enemy Unknown or Jagged Alliance, it does provide an extra incentive to WATCH OUT! The GUI while simple, is different than most games had and if one is only accustomed to modern games might find it a bit weird. Not difficult (as long as you read the manual), just weird. So, after you pick your soldiers and their weapons/accessories, you enter the mission, picking where to start each soldier depending on the map, the mission, your plan, etc. After that the mission starts in a turn based format. You play first, followed by the other one or two sides. Enemies and neutrals. The later UFO Enemy Unknown is close to this one in the tactical aspect. You spend action points for each action. Move, turn, operate, shoot, reload, etc. The number of AP per soldier depends on the soldier's stats AND how much they carry. Heavier load = fewer AP. There are fields of view for each soldier and each enemy character on the map. There are obstacles which can block the view and the shots, both friendly and enemy. You can choose how to shoot which can cost different AP, etc. Basically if you have played UFO or say Laser Squad, you will quickly feel at home here. It's a very good game, especially for the time. I did an unboxing/quick look of the ST version few years ago. https://youtu.be/lj6_9CYD8pg

Never forgotten classic, in my mind

This is a game I have fond memories of. I played the DOS CD Rom version to completion (probably on easy). I just remember the very posh English voice over, especially when the mission is over "Let's get out of here". I remember that keeping points over per round, meant that you had a bit of "credit" if you were surprised when the enemy suddenly was sighted - that is, you get an opportunity to shoot first etc. I can imagine the interface is very clunky by today's standards - but back in the day, "standards" were looser and you had more patience with GUI quirks as you bought a game a played it "to death".

Great for fans of UFO/Laser Squad

Had this back in the day on the Amiga and it's an absolute classic to my mind. Very similar to the combat section of UFO (X-COM), admittedly the UI is clunky and the fog of war effect inside buildings takes some getting used to, but there is a lot of gameplay value here. If you're new to the game, persevere beyond the first mission as it's actually the worst one. Use the map view to scan about and get a clearer picture of what your guys can actually see. Also take your time, use cover and flashbangs to your advantage, saving some time units to react in the enemy turn. If you just go in all guns blazing you'll get wiped out, but employ some tactics and the game is really rewarding.

Does not messure up

Very clunky UI, unintuitive game-play and lack of depth explains why this game has gone under the radar. The overall premise is solid. But just like any turn based strategy game, if the overall experience doesn't run smoothly, then the game can become a chore to get through. There are too many games that were released in this era that do a much better job, hence it's hard to recommend you give up your time to Sabre Team.
