Good roguelike! Soundtrack really helps to set the mood as well. Word of caution!: Don't expect complexity levels of games like Barony or Delver, but stuff that is here feels very solid. This is a good ol "yank the Yendor amulet" there and back adventure dungeon crawling game.
In the age of disappointing remakes and subpar "remasters," Rogue-FP in an unexpectedly delightful gem. This game may not be ambitious as the contemporary indie rogueliek games, but the visual redesign of the typical ASCII-style dungeon crawling game converting it into a gorgeos yet minimalistic game design with intuitive controls and distinguishable enemy sprites.
The devs behind this game improved certain aspects of the roguelike formula by adding the "Dig mode," which has literal pitfalls and foreboding ruin architecture.
The devs also deliberately replicate some of the flaws found in the original rogue game by offering players workarounds. Rogue (1980) occassionally has dead-end passages where suual keybaording skills wont get you through. Rogeu-FP includes a prompt which informs you that it's possible to press the Q button to unlock secret passageways and traps, making this game intuitive for players new to the roguelike genre.
This game is an excellent arcade-like game for new players and a nostalgic treat for long-time players fo roguelikes.
I don't really have anything negative to say about this game, the closest to issues I have with this game is I wish you didn't have to open up the overworld map everytime you opened it up and I wish you had the option to play only the original 1980 version, other then that for 5 dollars this is one good deal
If you enjoy roguelikes and immersive dungeon crawling, Rogue-FP is pure candy for both your eyes and heart. Its beautiful, distinct graphic modes alone justify the purchase—experiencing the thrills and cruelties of the game that gave its name to the myriads of roguelikes that would follow, in stunning neo-retro 3D ASCII art, is more than worth the modest price. But this game is also something new. While offering you the option of playing the classic Rogue, the modern Rogue-FP version includes a series of enhancements, variations, and additions that expand on the original while remaining 100% respectful and true to its spirit and magic. Rogue-FP is a labor of love and a wonderful gift to all of us dungeon crawlers.
As any fan of Roguelikes know most of the best of them are free, so when new ones with way less to them feature and especially content wise (specifically monster/weapon/armour/accessory/etc counts/variety and lacking in cool loot systems like randarts and such)come around and daring to want money for the experience it can be hard to really want them. I mean, you could buy something overpriced and wrong like Barony (eww btw imo, don't like that one), or you could play something like DCSS, Frogcomposband, IVAN, or the endless SlashemExtended. Back to Rogue-FP though the few reviews that can be found probably are one of the things holding people back from buying but considering it still gets updates pretty frequently, worthy ones too more than mere fixes and such I hope people catch on that it's probably the best way to play the game that started the whole genre, in a way that more people should be able to like. Barely have even got too far honestly but the graphics alone will probably keep my attention for a good while.
