The first roguelike in which you play as the devil, which means you can change some of the game's rules to your advantage! Run after run, manage your team of famous evil geniuses as they encounter unforeseen events and turn-based combat. Unlock new skills, create powerful synergies and use your powers to turn the situation in your favour at critical moments. Only by collecting ancient artefacts can you finally take your revenge on the Demon Hunters.
A DARK TALE
Weakened from defeat to the forces of good, you fled the world and sought refuge in hell to survive. Decades later, you have returned with your most faithful Disciples to exact revenge on those wretched Demon Hunters. But the world has changed in your absence. Your enemies have become all-powerful, and a new religion – the Sanctua Lumen – has become very influential. It mercilessly hunts down all those who serve you. To reinstate your hold over the world of humans, you must first regain the strength you previously wielded by taking possession of artefacts with legendary power.
CONTROL FAMOUS EVIL GENIUSES
Create your team of 3 Disciples from Dracula, the Headless Horsemen, Bloody Mary, the White Lady, Lilith, Hecate, Baron Samedi, and Frankenstein and his Creature.
Each Disciple has their own unique story, abilities and gameplay: combine their skills to create devastating synergies, and deal with the mortals that dare stand in your way.
Collect souls and exchange them for new skills, upgrades and powerful relics that can strengthen your Disciples.
THE DEVIL PLAYS BY HIS OWN RULES
Sacrifice some of your health to control the game interface: nothing will stop you – and certainly not the rules imposed on mortals.
Manipulate the health bars of your Disciples and enemies, optimise status effects to suit your fight tactics, open portals on the map, tip the odds in your favour during events… there are many occasions to use your diabolical powers throughout your run.
TAKE BACK YOUR RIGHTFUL PLACE
Increase the terror gauge by winning fights and completing interactive events to earn valuable bonuses for your Disciples.
Complete each event to your liking to reduce the influence of the Sanctua Lumen, give mortals good reason to fear you, and decide the fate of traitors who have allied themselves with your enemies.
Take revenge on the Demon Hunters in epic turn-based fights.
After about 15 hours in the game, I never faced a single bug. Stylish graphics, and nice audio. Gameplay has no random (except maps/bonuses, etc), everything on the battlefield is up to you. And one mistake could cost you a lot. If you like roguelikes/likes and party skills combinations - this game is for you.
A devilish strategy RPG that I've enjoyed and found challenging to beat, so far, on apprentice mode.
The game is complete as is, though I wish there were more meta elements to make the game easier for those who find the complex skills and potential strategies too difficult. It feels underdeveloped in some respects - worldbuilding, world map, disciple interactions...
Many more positives than negatives, for me.
I found the game more time consuming than I would have liked; though a run depends somewhat on RNG for relics and the disciples you put together. All the characters are effective when you learn suitable skill synergies.
Love the soundtrack and artwork.
I'll be supporting the developer by purchasing their upcoming game Synergy.
3 hours in, I'm going to chalk my having not heard of this one up to it's super generic title and a crowded market, but for the sale price I bought it at, this a damn fine little game.
The basic concept - killing puritan withhunters with the help of famous (public domain) monsters in service of the devil works fine. The structure of the game is like any of a hundred other deckbuilders and card battler roguelites you've played a bunch and are sick of.
What stands out to me is threefold:
1) The presentation here is just excellent. Great animations, voicework and music. The interface is not the best I've seen, a bit busy but I always appreciate being able to roll over status conditions and terms and get the explanation right on screen. The game doesn't feel like it costs ten bucks.
2) Two different "health" bars in HP and Spirit. Attacking either will kill an enemy, but building too much in one direction means some fights are trivial and some are impossible. It's not much of an innovation, but it's mechanically new enough to add some wrinkles.
3) Devil Powers. The real hook of the game is that you can use your powers to "cheat". Your main health bar can be drained to heal your characters, move status effects around and refresh your skills. It's limited in some fashions for balance reasons - if a boss character has a unique buff that is the hook of that fight, don't expect to be able to steal it - but it makes me feel like every fight has more options which is nice.
The writing is good. The presentation is good. The mechanics are good. Frankly, its kind of sad that this game has so much competition in the space that it'll probably never become a big hit. It doesn't have that "X" factor., but it doesn't really need it at 10 bucks (or the 5 I paid on sale). Pick it up, play with it for 10 or 12 hours, boom, you got your money out of it, easy.
