Epic RPG? No, but a time killer.

Risen 3 is the very definition of trying to make everyone happy, ending up pleasing nobody. At its core, Risen 3 is a solid cRPG with a pirate-y, caribbean-y touch where you can hack and slash your way through various quests and level ups. The fighting works just fine. Not often will you encounter enemies you will have trouble with. The quests are fine. While rarely memorable, they are also rarely upsetting. Minor mechanics, like lock-picking, or the ability to turn into a bird and fly to previously inaccessible parts of the world are just fine as well. They come up enough times to not be wasted, and you will never fight with them. The story is probably the weakest part, but since you spend most of the game not dealing with it, that is fine too. So, out of this sea of "meh", how did the developer try to bind you to the game? By placing monsters to fight everywhere. And plants to pick up. And treasure to find. And simple, same-y quests to do. Everything increases some kind of stat, gives you some kind of reward. A lot of simple quests are even broken down into mini quest-series, so that every single step of the way you get XP and gold, so don't leave game, please! Did you look into this corner yet? I'm sure there is a bag of coins somewhere around here, adding to your insane fortune that you can not reasonably spend anyway! Personally I find this upsetting as I have seen this type of game done so much better in the first two Gothic games - even in the first Risen (which, by all accounts, is a remake of Gothic 2). Therefore I must ask, why are there no real surprises? Memorable quests? Challenging enemies? Situations that require unconventional thinking? Friendships, rivalries, character development, impossible odds? Excitement? Humanity? Gothic 2 (2002) had these things, and I do not think it is too much to ask for. Instead I get to fight a ton of the same spider enemies from the last island, only now they are green. Well, I guess I have some time to kill.

Old Gothic charm

I love this game and why do I love it? Is it a perfect game? No. Well I've never really seen a perfect game but then again is it a very good game? Not really. But why do I love this game? I love this game because I loved playing it and I enjoyed every last minute I played this game. Yes it is cheesy but to me that's what I expected. More than in any other Risen game I feel the energy of the old Gothic games. To me the Gothic series is what got me into playing RPGs. And playing Risen 3 reminded me of these old games and there are so many "Gothic Moments" - little easter eggs for those who played the Gothic series. It just feels like a solid game. To me as a Gothic fan the Risen franchise is what I enjoy and thus I enjoyed Risen 3. The gameplay works fine and is easy to understand. The story, well is cheesy yeah but the atmosphere and the mood and the setting is perfect. Risen 3 is a mixture of Risen 1 and Risen 3. It's not 100% Pirates but it's not 100% Medieval Fantasy either. It's something between and to me this combination worked perfectly. I just had fun playing the game and I think that's what's important when you play and rate a game.

Beautiful, a great deal of fun

Risen 3 is absolutely beautiful, taking you from tropical islands to abandoned ancient ruins to a volcanic lava-spewing hellscape. The world is completely open right from the start. Each area has enemies in a range of difficulty. The world is stuffed from end to end with hidden areas, rewards, quests, monsters and loot. You can go where you want, when you want, and it's always worthwhile. In terms of world building, Piranha Bytes has done a great job! Character development works well. You have many choices for what skills to invest in, and different character builds play differently. The experience ("glory") system lets you train abilities at any time in a way that is fluid, fun, and engaging. You do have to choose a faction eventually: guardians/mages, demon hunters, or voodoo pirates. The spells from other factions are available as scrolls for use by anyone, so you don't miss out on much by choosing one over the other. Any of the three factions are viable. Combat is varied and generally fun. You can fight with swords, guns, thrown/shooting weapons, magic spells, or a mix. The options play differently and all _work_. This is quite an achievement! This game is a solid 4.5 stars. I'm rounding up because the game gets so much right. The downsides: There's not much customization for the main character's appearance. He looks how he looks, and you either like it or you don't. About halfway through the game, there is a lot of slogging through small combats and minor quests to progress. You keep earning glory points, and there's enough to invest them in to keep improving your character in interesting ways, but it's still a lot of effort. The two boss battles are downright painful to get through. Ultimately, this game stays true to its Piranha Bytes roots while smoothing over many rough edges of earlier titles. If you like any of the Gothic or Risen series, you'll probably like this.

Imperfect, but fun game

This game is much better than Risen 2, which was a huge disappointment. It has its issues and some jank, but if you've played Gothic or Risen, then you know what to expect. I would have given this 3.5 if that were possible. Not a masterpiece by any means, but recaptures enough of that old Gothic feel to have a lot of fun with.

Risen 2.5

I don't know why people complain about it not being a good RPG: it doesn't even try to be an RPG. It is an open world pirate/fantasy action adventure game with character skill progression, focused on exploration. RPG is not even mentioned in the categories. The biggest pros: Piranha fixed 85% of the annoying bugs and glitches from Risen 2. Gameplay-wise there weren't too big changes, only the skills/crafting were streamlined in a positive direction. We've got a new story in an interesting world. The game is still atmospheric beautiful (not in a photo-realistic way like new titles), even in 2021. Swordplay was improved and balanced, now I didn't feel the need to switch to muskets at the half of the game. You have the map of every island, so no blind starts. Now the negatives: Dodging is set to avoid falls from cliffs due to the minor platforming elements, but this causes you to get stuck in battle on every small obstacle, like a patch of grass. The story-telling is pretty bad (voice acting and script), but at least mostly skippable. We didn't get a new world, which were interesting sometimes (how those islands changed in a few years), but mostly boring. The challenge went to the bottom. The game is simply too easy. The Fog Island DLC is kinda OK, but the Isle of thieves is only ~1 hour, and the equipment addon only makes the game even easier. The permanent skill potions now count towards the XP scale of the skills. This means if you want all your attributes at 105, you need to wait a lot before using them. Completely unnecessary restriction. I would give the game a 3.5 or even 4 because I really liked it, but objectively for a new player it would be mediocre.
