Qauke 3 is a beautifully fast paced arena multiplayer fps that has a really high ceiling for skilled players. The movement and level design allows players to improve dramatically over time. It's just amazing and so is blowing your friends into meaty chunks across the room! What blows my mind is this game is 15 years old and has a F2P version out now and they still charge $20 for it. What? Why? Stop it.
As other reviewers have pointed out, 18 EUR for game of this age may seem unreasonable, especially when you consider the fact that Quake Live is free. However, Quake III provides so much more enjoyable experience than QL. Q3A offers *drastically* more freedom, there still are lots of private servers, many of them use really marvelous mods, strange maps and so on.
Mods introduce so many different twists to gameplay that original game creators wouldn't even be able imagine. InstaUnlagged, Excessive, CPMA, OSP, FreezePlus, eFreeze, noghost, defrag and many, many others. Quake Live has freeze tag and instagib, but it's awfully stripped compared to what Quake III with PR 1.16n offers, not to mention that instagib community in QL is minuscule. Freedom!
Quake Live doesn't even allow servers to play custom maps, Q3A community has produces thousands of miscellaneous map. Some of them are terrible, some are just a novelty and others are perfect for serious matches. Freedom!
Did I mention that you can switch between versions (point releases) of Quake III? Every point release has different community, different servers, different mods, different people. 1.32 that is installed by default is just the tip of an iceberg. Google ofxq3switch205f.exe to get convenient application that allows you to switch between versions. Freedom!
Quake 3 is an amazing fast paced multiplayer arena shooter (is what I would be saying if i didn't totally suck arse at it) nuff said, you already know that, we all know it.
However there's a reason you should get this instead of quake live,
you see... much like many other "free" shooters, quake live uses a horrible virus like drm/anti cheat program called GameGuard, just look it up and you will find page after page of disgruntled players warning you about it
This is a common technique, and while it is mostly used in korean/chinese online fpsses only sometimes a western game will adopt this horrible system
Quake 3 however, does not have this as far as I know (unless Bethesda sneakily added it in in which case expect an edit of this review)
In my opinion £13 is worth not downloading a virus... nuff said.
Linux Users: Just make sure to download the Quake 3 Script and XQF multiplayer server browser from the Ubuntu Store to play this game native, then you're good to go!
Other than that, it is a great game as people still play it surprisingly! It is just pure fun!
