Childhood classics

In the late 90s, Humongous Entertainment was the premier developer of children's PC games. The company had four flagship series, each of which targeted a slightly different age range: Putt-Putt for the youngest players, Spy Fox for the oldest, and Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam for those in between. All four series were charming, but Pajama Sam is the best-written, most imaginative, and most memorable. In the first game, our protagonist stumbles into a fantastical world inside his closet to do battle with the sinister forces of Darkness, capital D. However, in true adventure-game form, he is mugged (by trees!) and stripped of his superhero gear. Your primary goal throughout the game is to explore Darkness' mansion and the surrounding areas to reclaim his gear once and for all. Along the way, you'll encounter likable characters, a mad scientist's laboratory, a cheesy take on Tic-Tac-Toe, and a truly addictive iteration of Snake. All of this is wonderfully animated in the style of a 1990s cartoon. The game is short; if memory serves, it can be easily completed in three to five hours. However, the game is worth replaying because of an ingenious gimmick: certain aspects of the game are randomized. Some dialogues and puzzles change whenever you start a new game. It's surprising to me that so few adventure games implement this value-adding feature. The sequel sees Sam tackling the forces of thunder and lightning. To me, it's not as memorable as the first game, but still fun. Its writing and production values are on par with the original. Lost & Found a bonus feature to the two relatively meaty adventures. These games have aged well, but they do benefit from nostalgia goggles. If you didn't experience these in your youth, you might be put off by their genteel atmosphere and simplicity of play. If that's the case, try introducing them to a niece or nephew -- preferably one who hasn't been playing COD and GTA since birth. Their enjoyment might prove contagious. :)

My kids' favorite story game, still

My 12 year old still plays these for fun from time to time, and this is, hands down, still the best kids game series I've ever seen.

Humongous's superhero

A classic series in the realm of gaming back in the 90s as well as today! Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside is the first game in the collection. Pajama Sam's journey into the Land of Darkness to find and capture Darkness is by far the best. It has a great sense of imagination and mystery to keep the player on their toes as they explore. Meeting fun characters, solving puzzles, and playing games along the way. Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren't so Frightening is the second game in the collection. Pajama Sam travels to World Wide Weather to confront Thunder and Lightning is a solid but mundane follow-up to the first. In that the main plot of the story has Sam fixing a mess that he created. Due to this, it lacks the mystery that made the first so good. Sam feels more of a handyman than a superhero in this game. Regardless, it still contains fun characters and puzzles to solve. As well as a fun board game you can play at any time. Pajama Sam's Lost & Found is the last game on offer in this volume and its the weakest. Not that its bad, it offer some fun little mini games. However these never hold my interest as the other games in this collection. Not only that but the other Junior Arcades from Humongous are more fun to play. Overall, I say this is a solid pack for everyone to play. All three games have insanely replay value in that they change the layout and outcomes with each play through. Its a must have for any fan of adventure and puzzle games.

Nice for children / Good nostalgia

This game would still be a good game for children even now. You can see the elements from the original creator of Monkey Island but on a more cute and even educational note.

Awesome Adventure

This was a flash from my past! I love all the games like this, Pajama Sam, Spy Fox and more. This was a fun aventure that actually makes you think a little, not massively but still I got stumped a couple of times. A solid story with good gameplay and the ability to choose which set of puzzles you want to play, makes it so much easier to explore the many options this game has! Overall, I highly recommend this game especially if you have never played it!
