A Painkiller fan-game thats Ok.
Phew, I bought this on CD on impulse after I saw it in EB Games. I was a huge fan of the original so, I thought this was more of the same, I was both right and wrong. What I got amounts to a Painkiller fan-game that at times is a real joy to play and at other times is a real slog. You do not play as Daniel in Overdose, you play a half-demon/half-angel named Belial if memory serves and you have to escape from your prison and get out of purgatory like in the original Painkiller. You do this by murdering tons of dudes with weapons that are largely exactly the same in function from the original game but have new models so they look different, some remodels are pretty cool but others are unappealing. Belial also now delivers one-liners but the voice acting is kinda lame and some of what he says may illicit a chuckle but is generally not very funny and so thus you will be very familiar with his half angel ass by the end of the experience. The level design is really hit or miss, some of it is fantastic and will make your jaw drop, other times it just...standard, some levels are real combat slogs though and can be quite difficult due to some new enemies that make an appearance and have nigh unavoidable and damaging attacks, but the original shares this issue (imho) to a degree so I kinda saw through it, some levels are similar to levels from painkiller and battle out of hell. Though the worst nagging issue is the level loading can be a extreme though somewhat modern hardware should reduce it. All in all, as far as I am concerned Overdose was the BEST of the FAN-MADE (notice the emphasis here) expansions for Painkiller and if you enjoyed Painkiller Black Edition, I encourage you to pick this one up as well. You should get some enjoyment out of it and gasp! even fun! I hope you found my review helpful, if you have any issues feel free to message me on the forums. -Lord_Kane
