Description
Outlast 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed survival horror game Outlast. Set in the same universe as the first game, but with different characters and a different setting, Outlast 2 is a twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets.

Outlast 2 introduces you to Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization. Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you’re right in the thick of it.

You are Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with your wife, Lynn. The two of you are investigative journalists willing to take risks and dig deep to uncover the stories no one else will dare touch.

You're following a trail of clues that started with the seemingly impossible murder of a pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe. The investigation has lead you miles into the Arizona desert, to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do.

An exercise in frustration.

The first game was waaay better. While I can appreciate another avoidance game, more often than not you will keep dying repeatedly in one section or a chase scene. This completely ruined the immersion for me such that the game wasn't really scary at all. There's plenty of gore, but you've seen it all before in other horror games. The one extreme scene which got the game initially banned from rating in Australia doesn't even seem to be in the game anymore. Unless you read every single scrap of paper you find in the game the ending will likely not make much sense. You'll see shovels, boards, all manner of potential weapons to use to knock at least one isolated foe down - but you can't touch any. You can only operate your highly technical 1080p camera. Many of the outdoor areas you're in have so much brush that along with darkness you're trying to move through obstacles you cannot see at times. In one particular chase scene after racing down some stairs to move a cupboard to get away, I watched one of the baddies defy game physics and drop right through solid stairs to the spot right in front of me and proceeded to thwack me. Go for the first Outlast and the DLC, much better experience. This game only seems to make people angry including me. Dying over and over and over is just a burglar for feeling any kind of immersive fear.

Looks great, plays not so great

Astonishing visuals, but let down by all-too-frequent insta-kills, ropey narrative and constantly having to sate your cameras ravenous appetite for batteries.

A different approach that fell flat.

I was a huge fan of the first game, and don't get me wrong, there are some very good moments in this game, but they just relied way to much on the chase sequences. There were a few of those moments in the first game, but that wans't really what made the first game so great. This game really is all about trial and error. You run then die run and die until you find exactely were you are supposed to go. This becomes tedious and repetitive fast. There were some things that they got right like graphics and more hiding spots, but many times these were less than useful. It's not that they just put out a crap game or just didn't try, it's just they tried a defferent approach that just didn't work; at least in my opinion. I would definitely pay more for the first game than I would this one.

Too much error and trial mechanic

Nice graphics and atmosphere cant save from fail this hide and seek game with very repetitive gameplay and superhuman enemies. You will die a lot not knowing where exactly to run when enemies see you from 100m in the night hiding in the dark corner. Too much trial and error mechanics and way too much of bible preaching for anyone's taste . I lost will to complete game after 3-4 hours of playing.

A great horror game

I play it through with my two cousins. We all three agree its a really good, atmospheric game. As a critic i have to say: Outlast 2 make some aspects better then the previous titles, like the visuals or the sound, and some worse . The antagonists are not as memorable like the doctor or the lover from Outlast 1 and the DLC. Still the main villain from Outlast 2 is good (but not as good as this two i mentioned). On the other hand the game is more linear and scripted. I would gave 5 stars if we could stealth through it and avoid most of the combat stations, instead of being forced too run when a script is triggered. More freedom of movement within the locations would also be appreciated. I would love to collect more items related to the story and the universe of Outlast then the pages alone. Overall the game is definitely worth playing. Its a high quality product from a small studio which can stay alongside such big companies like Capcom with its Resident Evil VII. Even if the game mechanic are different in this two games, they are one of the best of their genre. Personal Note: I watched the first Outlast on youtube. The temptation was high too do it again. But i have split the cost with my cousins and we played it together. For the company it would be better if there were three sales instead of one, but then again i fight with myself to not see it on youtube. Instead i decided to support the developer. I would encourage you to do the same. The Reasons: - If you split, it cost you like a ticket to the cinema, and as i said its a really good horror game. - Its a type of game that is good to play with one or two of your best friends. Just play it through in two or three sessions. Make some cookies as well ;) to discuss the plot when you take a break. - The developer will get the money and can produce the next Outlast game for us all.
