Includes Orwell and Orwell: Ignorance is Strength.

Big Brother has arrived - and it’s you. Investigate the lives of citizens to find those responsible for a series of terror attacks. Information from the internet, personal communications and private files are all accessible to you. But, be warned, the information you supply will have consequences…

Orwell is a new governmental security program that has the power to survey the online presence of every person in The Nation. It can monitor all personal communications and access any computer. To preserve the privacy of citizens, human researchers examine the data Orwell finds and decide which pieces of information should be passed on to the security forces, and which should be rejected.

Selected from thousands of candidates, you are Orwell’s first human researcher. And when a terror attack rocks the Nation’s capital city of Bonton, Orwell, and you, are immediately put to the test. Starting with a single person of interest, you'll help the security forces build out and profile a network of potential culprits.

But are these people really terrorists? What does the information you reveal to Orwell say about them? What if you find out things about them that not even their loved ones know? What is the real price of maintaining the security that the Nation is yearning for?

MATURE CONTENT WARNING

Please note, Orwell includes mature language at multiple points throughout the game as well as mature themes and is not suitable for younger players.

Orwell: Ignorance is Strength

Step into the shoes of a government official in a top-secret department of the Orwell surveillance program. A political crisis has arisen across borders, threatening to plunge neighbouring Parges into violent civil unrest and embarrass the ruling Party of the Nation. Given the power to both uncover and fabricate "the truth", you must decide for yourself how far you will go in the service of your country and whether the truth is sacred or ignorance is strength.

Orwell: Ignorance is Strength is the second season of the award winning surveillance thriller - Orwell. It will release as a weekly episodic series and will introduce new mechanics and features to the series, providing players with greater agency to direct their investigation and even the power to use information they gather to influence public opinion. The story takes place in parallel to the events of the first season and reveals a darker, more secret side to the Orwell program.

Bad game and many confusing versions

I know we're supposed to critique the game itself, and the guideline say to "avoid noise" about pricing, etc, but in this case I think it is warranted. This purchase contains the two Orwell games, which I have already rated. My complaint with the different versions is that there are so many to choose that it actually causes confusion. The case is that while looking for highly rated games this showed up, with a 5 star rating. However, this pack actually contains two games that are rated as 3.9 stars. When I started seeing what was all about, I ended up finding so many versions that is was a problem to choose, and the ratings would be misleading. I dislike the sales strategy for this game, as they are rebundling and reselling the same things over and over: two games, and their soundtracks. Instead of making so many combinations, it would be better if they just had some discount when purchasing multiple games or soundtrack bits, like I've seen done with other games. The games are rather unremarkable, see my reviews in Orwell and Orwell: Ignorance is strength for details.

A disappointing sequel to 'Orwell'

The first 'Orwell' game is one of my favourites of all time. Despite its ludicrous premise, the game mechanics and story worked really well together. To me, it was a complete experience; so to hear that there would be a sequel got me curious. Where else could the 'Orwell' story go? 'Orwell: Ignorance is Strength', is set during the same time frame as 'O1'. In 'O2', you play as another new recruit, tasked with profiling persons of interest in a political scandal. The story of 'O2' runs in parallel with that of 'O1', and that is one of the weaknesses of the game. 'O2' seems to expect you to remember the politics of 'O1', which I don't. The setting and politics of 'O1' to me were merely dressing and reasons for snooping on people. However in 'O2', you need to have a keener awareness of the players in the politics of The Nation, Parges, The Party, etc. Without a proper review of these background information, it's hard to get into the story. Intersecting the story of 'O2' with that of 'O1' just highlights how uninteresting, unlikeable and unsympathetic the main players are in 'O2'. My decisions in 'O1' were in part based on how much I liked or empathized with the characters. But in 'O2', I couldn't care less. That meant the twist at the end of the 'O2' suddenly became less impactful because I felt all characters deserved some form of retribution. The most interesting thing about 'O2' is a new game mechanic called Influencer, which allows you to construct a narrative to combat an opposing one to change the direction of the dominating online conversation. Unfortunately, this mechanic doesn't appear until the last of 3 chapters, while the first 2 is spent on building profiles like in 'O1'. It's a shame that such novel game mechanic and opportunity were wasted. It pains me to say that 'O2' is not that great. It's interesting, but it's nowhere near the brillance of 'O1'. It's worth a try if you're a fan of the first game, but it's overall worth passing over or ignoring.

A Fun Dystopia Simulator

The Orwell series is a really cool dystopian state sim. I bought it off Steam and was surprised at the low rating on here. Yes, you will be doing a lot of reading whilst you scour your target’s social media pages. Yes, it can be frustrating. But if you know what you’re getting into— and you’re into it: Orwell might be a choice pick for such individuals.
