Description
OpenTTD is a business simulation game in which players earn money by transporting passengers and cargo via road, rail, water, and air. It is an open-source remake and expansion of the 1995 Chris Sawyer video game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

Build

Connect industries and cities on procedurally-generated maps of up to 4096 x 4096 tiles by building a network of roads, railways, docks, and airports. Navigate dense city streets, cross oceans and rivers, and conquer high mountains in one of four climates.

Transport

Work alone or with friends to complete production chains and transport finished goods to towns. Assemble a fleet of hundreds of vehicles, transferring cargo as needed in an interconnected, multimodal network with optional cargo destinations.

Upgrade

Keep up with technological improvements through the years as towns grow; new modes of transport are invented; and industries appear, change production, or fail. Expand stations and build network capacity to keep up with demand and avoid delays.

Extend

Customize your OpenTTD experience via community-made mods downloaded through an in-game content service, including real-world vehicles, new industry sets, custom scenarios, and more.

Free and open-source

OpenTTD is free and open-source software, licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2.0. OpenTTD is under ongoing development. OpenTTD is not an abbreviation of anything.

15+ years of coding quality

OpenTTD is an old project. This comes with good and bad. This project is incredibly code mature. I would doubt it's ability to crash. Except when dealing with the AI; whose scripting has failed to keep up with newer code. On the flipside, the developers can be incredibly obstinate about adding new features or obsoleting old features. There are a lot of options. And settings. Confusedly, they've seperated Settings and Options into two separate realms presumably due to one being patches rather than options. In fact, there are (AotW) FOUR settings buttons, and yet lacks for customization such as typeface selection. In the context of the original game, TTD has the strange legacy of being a game that obsoleted and outstripped the sequel, Locomotion. This is probably what gave Chris Sawyer his complex with game modding. There is an absolute plethora of mods via the inbuilt content download system. Rather confusingly (AotW) there's no way to sort the content by date; what I would cite as the biggest flaw of the download system second to the lack of any preview. But at the end of the day, this is all open source, so maybe you could be the one to fix the problems or completely change the game so none of this review makes sense anymore. ;)

finally they got it in gog

few years ago talked with a developer from gog and asked if it was possible to add the game in gog becasue it was free and so good - it would give a positive vibe to the game list gog achieved to make so far. He said that they had to consider some legal things and that maybe in future it could be done ..... I see now they kept word and thanks so much to have added this classic game with a very good community to gog. The game is like the transport tycoon deluxe but with much bigger maps and much more options of modding and adding textures and buidlings - a classic

House Rule: No Airplanes

I'm gonna start with the bad. This is a game based off code and game design from the mid 90s. There's some things that are obtuse as hell to understand and get right, yet once you get it, you get it. I've been playing this for years and I still don't fully understand signals. However, this is one of the most detailed "tycoon" games ever made. The original TTD created the main mechanics that OTTD then built off of, and what has been added to the core game is far more than what is offered in similar games from its time like Railroad Tycoon or even Chris Sawyer's very own followups, Rollercoaster Tycoon and Locomotion. Not to say that RCT is by any means an inferior game, but compared to OTTD, RCT is much simpler to understand. Besides the point, OpenTTD is an excellent game that if you aren't careful will cause you to succumb to Civilization Syndrome and continue redesigning railroad systems well beyond the sunset and eventual sunrise.

Legendarily brilliant.

You remember the awesome TTD, right? From your PC, or maybe even your PS1! Well, this is a totally free open sourced remake of that game. It can be a bit fiddly - the menus could do with a refresh, and you'll need to go in and change the menu scale as soon as you load it up - but it's all here, in all it's glory, but faster, smoother and better than you remember the OG game it's based on. You have so many options for graphics, AI and more, all wrapped up in a confusing but exhaustive list of modifications that are accessed from in game. Even today, people are coming up with new AIs and scenarios all the time. There's no better way to play TTD today than this - and I've been saying that for the last 15 years.

Would be happy to pay for it

I remember playing the original game, Transport Tycoon, on a windows 95 machine my friend had. OpenTTD is an amazing recreation of the game and the devs deserve support. As for the game, I'd like to say it's timeless but it isn't. The gameplay itself appears to be well balanced and fun, at least to me it does. I found most fun in creating giant complex railway networks across the entire map, making sure there are no deadlocks. Graphics on the other hand have aged a bit. Luckily if I remember correctly there are HD graphic packs that are fairly easy to install if you feel like the pixels aren't enough.
