Tight pakage and action that feels good.
This isn't an exceptionally long game, but it's cheap, and the gameplay mechanics are executed really well for an action platformer that has a lot of mobility and quick strategy. Along with a small set of melee skills and projectile weapons, your main tool is a harpoon that acts as both a spear melee weapon and a mobility device like a Legend of Zelda hookshot You can bash your way in close combat with the harpoon, or lob it into a distant enemy and teleport yourself towards them to get in a few good hits. It also grapples to non-hostile objects ,letting you work your way around the screen. The harpoon teleportation is also the primary focus of the platforming in the game. All the action feels good in this game to execute. The difficulty had a few frantic moments for me, and I died a fair amount of times, but I never felt cheated. My only real complaint with the game is the exceptionally lo-fi pixel art. It's a couple notches too much. The are moments of the game that show off a really cool style and a unique world, but become obscured by being made of only a handful of pixels. It can also make some of the chaotic moments or platforming hard to read. I also wish the autosave is more generous than a single slot. There were a few times I was having trouble with boss fights and wish I went into it wearing a different one of the magic hats that give you apecial combat abilities, and no older save to go back to be better prepared. Other than that, it was really fun while it lasted and left me wanting more. I'll be keeping an eye out to see what Skeleton Crew does next. Buy this game so they get money to make something bigger.
