Time Travel is real and history is up for grabs! In this point-and-click, you play Fia Quinn, a time agent for the ChronoZen agency. Your job is to keep close watch on seven travelers who have the desire (and the bank accounts) to sightsee in the past. Some are simply curious. Others have unfinished business to resolve. And they’ve all put down a lot of money for the trip, so it’s vital that you keep them happy while ensuring they follow the rules. But what could go wrong? It's only time travel, after all.

Features:

  • Seven eras of history to visit! From the speakeasies of Prohibition to the gangs of the Gilded Age to the morning of September 11th.
  • High resolution 1920 x 1080 graphics! That's 3x higher than Unavowed.
  • Lots of puzzles that require temporal thinking to solve.
  • Death! You CAN die in this adventure game, but time travel means you can try again. And again. And again.
  • Musical score by Thomas Regin (composer for Unavowed and the Blackwell series)
  • Full voice acting! Our largest cast yet.

Time-travel is difficult to write

They mostly managed to explain it in a kind of mundane way that makes time travel feel as really just another job for somebody, sans office politics. I liked Nozzo's and Fia's conversations. As for the point-click adventure it is a nice game. Sprite animation looks a little roboscoped and not too detailed, but environments are very lovely and puzzles are fine, not too complicated, and logical; sometimes they involve switching between two time periods or going through a time loop, but about half of them is pretty straightforward. I wish puzzles were a bit more complex in places, especially at the end. The whole game took me about 10 hours to finish, I think. The game is fully voiced, and by itself the voicework is very good but the dialogue flow is a bit stilted; it was clearly not two voice actors talking to each other most of the times, but lines strung together. I also wish there were ambient noises (car noises, rain), as without them New York environments feel bare. There are some callbacks to other series (Blackwell, Unavowed) but if all this happens in the same universe, there is a drastic lack of ghosts in this one. Overall as a fan of Wadjet Eye I am glad to play this game. But the very last second as the credit roll? That moment with the picture? This was a bit cruel.

Possible the weakest Wadjet Eye game

I'm not even sure what to say about it. From the first two chapters I was wary that it wasn't going anywhere interesting. Unfortunately, after beating it, that proved to be true. The plot will fall apart if you ask too many questions, individual stories are not super engaging, and main characters have very strange reasons for behaving the way they do. The music is good and the background art is nice enough (but the rotoscoped animation looks VERY wonky). Voice acting itself is mostly good, but the quality of the sound varies by quite a bit, some voice actors sound way better than others (and the main actress could really use some de-esser on her lines). It's still a cozy adventure you can beat in 3-4 evenings... if you've beaten every other adventure and have nothing else in your backlog. I honestly don't understand other reviews saying that THIS is their favorite WGE game, but to each their own, I suppose. Maybe get it on sale.

A lot to like, some not so much

I've played all of Dave Gilbert's previous adventure games (the Blackwell series and Unavowed being particular favorites of mine), and if you've also played his previous then you pretty much know what you're getting here. The story is excellent as always dealing more with the personal and emotional issues of the protagonist than with some grand overarching threat and doesn't bombard you with exposition despite its sci-fi time travel plot. The voice acting is good, the main character Fia's line delivery took some getting used to but it fits the character so it's fine. The puzzles are not too difficult, due to the time travel story the game actually does the save/reload thing FOR you at certain points so screwing up is actually woven into gameplay. Take notes though, the game does expect you to remember names, dates and numbers for certain puzzles. My experience wasn't entirely without complaint though, the story relies a little too much on irrational behavior to set up puzzles sometimes which can be annoying, also the aformentioned in-game save/reload system can get a bit tedious when you have to watch the exact scene over and over as you figure the puzzle out. There's also a slight nihilistic streak to some of the writing which I can understand given the time it was written and the times we're in now, but a little optimism can help brighten otherwise dark times and is sorely needed right now. The story is also completely linear and the lack of a branching narrative in a time travel game seems like a waste of potential. In all I'd recommend this game to existing fans and newcomers alike.

An incredible story and a game

I don't like time travel stories, and much to my annoyance I have to give Old Skies a 5 star score. The more I tried to tell myself this game is not that great, the more I had to admit this is an incredible game and features one of the best stories I've experienced in a while. I don't know which to applaud more in Old Skies - the story or the design. The story has a few issues with odd coincidences, but even now that the credits have rolled, I'm not sure if I still quite comprehend the nuances. Were those really coincidences, or just how time travel works? Argh, my head. I really felt for the characters who experienced the horror of knowing that at any moment all could not just vanish but never have existed in the first place. One could spend their live dedicating themselves to perfecting a craft, only to have their life's work chronoshifted away, not even knowing it happened. In such a world how hard must it be to find some purpose to exist, to have a dharma if you will? The gameplay is genius in how it teaches the player its the mechanics. The first chapter is a solid tutorial that allows the 2nd story to increase complexity to two parallel timelines, and the fourth story really ramps up the complexity with recursive time travel, only for the sixth story to really hammer home all you learned. There were a lot of great puzzles, although a couple I thought were a bit on the weaker side (the phonetically similar trigger word for the bomb paste for one). The "boss puzzle" where you heal poisoning by growing a tree over a decade in 30 minutes was probably the best puzzle I've seen in a point & click. The artwork for backgrounds was good, but I found myself missing the pixel art characters. The new style eventually grew on me, but I prefer the old ways. Music was incredibly good and suitable. I think I now understand why this game took so many years to make.
