Description

No Place for Bravery is a 2D top-down action RPG which weaves together high-quality visuals, a stirring soundtrack and intense combat moments into a deep and affecting tale of moral dilemmas and personal reflection of choices. YOUR choices.

The game will focus on parries and fast-paced combat. Making mistakes will be punishing and you’ll experience a lingering sense of fragility while facing the dangers of Bravery's world.

Thorn, a retired warrior plagued by nightmares, stumbles on an opportunity for redemption after finding clues to his daughter's disappearance from long ago. With the company of his disabled foster son, Phid, it will be up to the player to decide how far Thorn will go, not only to rescue his daughter but also to fulfill his ambitions.

The story of Bravery carries a strong message on the role of parental figures and the consequences of their choices in a troubled world. This message is informed by the developers' personal life experiences, and the game aims to impart these real, resonant feelings with competence and depth.

Thorn is a competent warrior in a world where people like him perish all the time. Under your control, Thorn will have the capacity to kill and survive from the word go, but you should expect to find Thorn’s fragility starkly reflected in your own series of likely defeats.

A captivating blend of the low fantasy setting, highly detailed pixel art, and beautiful hand-painted textures makes this decrepit world croak with breathtaking life, as Thorn carves his path through it. Every second that passes in No Place for Bravery pulses with an immersive, intense atmosphere that you’ll feel in your veins.

Promising and unfinished.

I'm writing this review roughly half an hour into the game, which is early; but that's because I've decided to pause there. Graphics are lovely, action has good heft and weight to it, combat seems to be very skill-based and allow for a lot of mastery. That's great stuff. I really want to like this game. The reason I'm giving it a 2/5 is because I'm playing with a Controller, and currently, the game doesn't allow for any type of changes to the control scheme. By that I mean the game technically has an option for it, but if you actually try to rebind any controls, your game is --fucked-- *Example 1:* I want to dodge on A, not B. But since "B" also is the button to go "Back" in all menus, it will also back out of the keybind assignment. Hence, I can't assign B to any new button since it won't let me. B is forever-dodge. *Example 2: I want to swap places of Block (Y) and Interact (A). The menu lets me do that at least. I now block on A, and I interact with Y. Wrong choice. Since "A" is the button to "Confirm" in menus, it no longer works. Does "Y" work to "Confirm"? No. Neither button works. All ingame prompts and options still say "A to Interact", but pressing it does nothing. Y can be used to do all the ingame function of A, but all the menu navigation is screwed over. Could I use the keyboard to navigate the menus? Yeah, I could! But it's annoying to swap between keyboard and controller all the time, especially if I wish to navigate menues or pull up items quickly. Could I also choose not to make any changes to the controls? Yeah, I might get used in time to what I think is a weird control layout. But eh, I'm the type of person that wants a tested and finished product when I buy it. Currently, this game doesn't let me rebind the keys as I want it to even though it's supposed to allow it. Luckily, this is something that should be an "easy" fix, so I'm just going to wait until it is fixed. Disregard this review if new patches come.

UPDATE IS MISSING

The Guardian Edition update that exists on Steam does not exist here on GOG. That's why the bad review. Is a good game. Promise. But it stagnates with its playability problems and that it has some errors with the joysticks. That's why the Guardian Edition update would fix everything (supposedly). It even promises to improve the design and playability. But it's my surprise that there isn't one on GOG. Until the update is available I will not change my two star review. Because it is fatal that the update is not here on GOG. Greetings. Saludos.

No Excuse For Incompetency

This game is broken. Do not reward failure. Do not buy. NoPlace is supposed to be an action RPG. Since the mechanics of this genre are flushed out over several years of iterations of this gaming style, there are few variables that can still be modulated a developer to express their creativity: style, characters, and story. NoPlace's appeal is in its style: towns nestled within the bones of giants, ruins of times long past, swarms of monsters and you —A weary and bitter man with his sword against the big bad world in search of his daughter. It sounds like it could be a great story but, you will never know because THIS GAME DOES NOT WORK. The game routinely glitches out leaving you stuck in lock screens, unable to obtain key items, or just crashes out right. The fighting and the dash puzzles are complete drag. Controls for this game are not as responsive as they need to be for this genre. Attacks and blocks show up just a bit too late at the smack of a button. Moving on screen is needlessly slow as running is activated passively by continuous walking. The enemies are spongy and "special" moves do little to tilt the course of a battle. Aiming is cumbersome being keyed to the same button as switching your weapon and must be released before firing. I get it, I too would be exhausted if I was fighting with social governance points strapped to my back at all times. That gets me to the characters of this game: Thorn's relations are so fickle that they disintegrate nearly instantly as the game starts. Somehow I am supposed to believe this guy who gives absolutely no fucks at all at anytime in any place, cares about a foster child by exposing him needlessly to death, leaves his ailing wife without provision of care, but also still wants to find his daughter. Thorn's friends are no better they are bitter, resentful, and antisocial to one another which seems antithetical to survival in a harsh world. I found the whole lot repulsive. Right Garbage/10

Issues

Seems ambitious and could have been good. Need more polish. Also, why is the dev here in comments giving a 5/5 review to the game?

Really Cool game!

Hey folks! I just gotta say, "No Place for Bravery" is seriously awesome! Like, seriously, I can't even right now. I'm kind of attached to it for some reason. This game looks sick! The graphics are like, super cool pixel art stuff that makes you feel like you're back in the old days, but in a totally amazing way. Everything looks so, so good, and it feels like they put, like, a zillion hours into making it perfect. About the story. It's like a rollercoaster of feelings, man! You play as Thorn, this older warrior dude looking for his lost daughter. It's like watching a movie, but you're in control. There are some deep moments, and you'll be like, "Whoa!" The talking parts are written so well, and you'll remember what they say. Playing this game is a blast. The fighting is super intense, and you gotta be smart about it. It's not too easy, but when you win, you feel like a champion. You get all kinds of cool weapons and moves to use, so it never gets boring. Oh, and the music! Dude, the music is rad. It totally fits the game and gets you pumped up for battles. You might even catch yourself humming some of those tunes when you're not playing. And there's so much stuff to find in the game. Like, secrets and cool stories hiding everywhere. You could spend forever exploring, and it's always a surprise.
