Description

October 1944, something strange is happening in Sundäe, a rustic Norwegian town where a mysterious dark moon hangs over the sky, generating uncertainty among its inhabitants.

As World War II continues, the Okkulte-55, a secret division of the Third Reich, arrives in Sundäe to unleash an ancient curse, in a desperate act to twist the course of the war.

Alexei Krakovitz, a quadriplegic professor of occult science and Akiro Kagasawa, his faithful assistant, are sent to Norway on a secret mission to unravel the mystery and save the world from the Okkulte-55 clutches.

An original story with absurd dark humor, riddled with eccentric characters, diabolical inventions, puzzles, occultism, talking dead, witches, worms, a mysterious party, and an ancient curse that threatens the human race.

An adventure so delusional that it will make you delirious to the delirium itself!

Fun title, with few reservations

Nine Witches is a classic-style pixel art point-and-click adventure game, except it's not really point and click. It's World War II and Nazi scientists are planning to release an ancient curse to change the tides of war. You play as Professor Krakovitz, occult sciences erudite, and his loyal assistant Akiro, in order to try to decipher their plans and stop them. Krakovitz is quadraplegic, so he can't physically interact with objects, but can leave his body in an astral form. In this form, no physical barriers can get in his path and he can talk to ghosts. Akiro, on the other hand, handles the inventory and is a good marksman (when his pistol doesn't jam). While the bulk of the game is classic adventure talking and puzzle solving, there are a few mandatory shooting sections, though their difficulty can be toned down. They're fun, if a bit hard. Graphically, the game looks nice, if a bit odd. The impression I get is that the sprites were designed as pixel art while the backgrounds were compressed to look like it. They don't look bad, but there's an obvious disconnect. Notoriously, and perhaps due to its console release, the game cannot be controlled with a mouse. You have to use a gamepad or a keyboard. The controls are good enough, but it's weird they didn't just add mouse controls for the PC version. It's not like it's a competitive game and it would give PC players an unfair advantage. The one thing that's hit or miss is the humor. Sometimes it's hilarious, while others groan inducing. Sometimes it's surprising, and others you can see the punchline coming from miles away. Sure, a few jokes are clearly there to troll the audience, but the self-referential 4th-wall breaking stuff almost never lands and feels just lazy. The story is actually pretty good, though. Overall, all the good far surpasses any negatives and I wholly recommend it.

Underwhelming

Lacking any sense for good storytelling and gameplay, it's not remotely as witty and funny as the creator think it is; the constant fourthwall-breaking and dull jokes are getting annoying quickly, as well as some of the repetitive gameplay elements. The few "action"-scenes are ruined by subpar controls. I give it credit for nice graphics, some decent ideas like switching characters for different skills, and maybe about every third joke that remotely works.

I agree with the critics of Dreadjaws. I can add that the French translation is well done and I thank the developpers for this point. This game is worth playing... However, I must say (like Dreadjaws) that the humor is sometimes very good, sometimes rude and sometimes difficult to understand... It is nevertheless a refreshing title. If you like story driven adventure games buy it.

Not bad, but could have been better

Nine Witches is a decent pixel art, point-and-click style adventure. Pros: - Interesting story. Set in WWII, Nazis are weaponizing an ancient anti-Viking curse in an attempt to win the war. You play a a quadriplegic professor of the occult & his Japanese assistant who are sent undercover to stop them. - Decent length. Took me about 7 hours--long enough to be enjoyable without over-staying its welcome. - Decent, stupid humor. Lots of dumb jokes, puns, & some meta 4th wall stuff. It's not going to win awards for it, but most of the humor aligns with what is typical in these types of games. - Proper difficulty. Some minor 'moon logic' puzzles, but not that bad--and not hard to get around. Cons: - Too much body humor. Poo, pee, vomit, etc...it's just NEVER as funny as people think it is, especially when the balance is off. It's sad because they clearly can write better jokes, but instead chose not to, I guess? Like one major character's personality is essentially only "gets drunk and farts...a lot. HA HA!" - Action sequences. 95% of the game is an inventory-based puzzle adventure, but then there are these weird gun battle bits that scale poorly. First time, you fight one thing. Then later another. Then on like your third exposure you fight 7 or 8 things, in waves, moving at different speeds, in a limited mobility environment. What? The fire lines are also pixel-perfect so you think you've lined up a good shot & it goes right "through" an enemy. The rules also aren't explained (there may randomly be other guns lying around you can use that you just have to notice exist). It got infuriating & I just stopped playing for the day several times when one popped up. - No fast travel. My god, it is 2023. There is no excuse for making us rewalk a half-a-dozen useless interstitial screens after we've unlocked or beaten an area. All in all, this is a good 4-star game. Despite a couple of glaring negatives, the overall experience is still well worth it for fans of the genre.

Odd but fun

Nine Witches truly is an original game. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I honestly can't compare this game to any other I've played before. It's a horror comedy game mixing P&C-adventure-style gameplay with occasional action/combat parts. It's quite cool but the combat gets a bit frustrating in the 2nd half of the game if you keep the setting on "challenging". After suffering several deaths I gave in and set it to easy (which also adds a fun/silly little element to the combat). The pixel art is a little too "low-res" for me but charming nonetheless. I would've liked if they added some character portraits during dialogues but that's just me. Another thing I missed in the later part of the game was a sort of fast travel option as it can get pretty tedious to travel from one part of the map to another because you missed to pick up an item. As others already pointed out, the humor is definitely not for everyone. Some jokes just didn't make sense to me and at times they were a little too forced and immersion breaking. Anyway, I had a good time with the game and if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, it's definitely a breath of fresh air.
