Great Start (in dev review)

Really solid foundation and I am excited to see what the finished product looks like. Not quite a throwback shooter, not quite a roguelite, not quite an rpg. This game nestles itself somewhere in between all three with a set story, but procedural levels, random weapons with different teirs and rarity levels, and a skill point system that is unlocked via a nice little platforming mini game. The shooting feels satisfying, the music (when it kicks in) is solid, which for me are incredibly important for a shooter. Level design is pretty basic, though that is likely a symptom of the procedurally gen'd levels. As far as the difficulty curve goes it feels about right. Though the early levels are very basic and that is because of the rate that they introduce new enemies. So the first few areas don't have as much variety to play with in terms of the encounters. Once you've reached the 3rd or 4th areas is when the action ramps up and gets really fun and frantic imo. On the whole if I could give a 4.5 I would because I have some small issues that can't be chalked up to bugs that will likely be ironed out, but I feel like rounding up is right in this case. Those small issues being the slow build in the early game, and the basic and sometimes very short levels. I would recommend either picking this one up or at least keeping an eye on this one as development continues.

Nails the Feel

If you like old school FPS games, you'll like this. The game plays really nice, and has good level design. There are plenty of fun weapons, upgrades, and various things to shoot at. My only gripe might be if the game is too short for the price. $19 may be steep.

A perfect mix of old and new!

I think I'm going to call Nightmare Reaper my favourite of the current retro FPS games recently added to the digital marketplace. There's DUSK, Ion Fury, AMID EVIL, Project Warlock, as well as Wrath and Prodeus around there corner; but Nightmare Reaper just feels the most well rounded to me so far. The blend of level design, art style, weapon selection, gameplay mechanics and diversity just all come together so well it's hard to describe unless you actually play the game. The graphics might not be to everyones taste, and at first I too was apprehensive until I started to see them more. There's pretty good detail in the enemy sprites and the cardboard cutout way they die is a great little touch! The lighting and textures all look suitably nice yet still retain a retro feel in the way they are put together, and the atmosphere some stages can portray is really quite unexpected from the inital look at the games screenshots. Sound is where I could see some improvement, yet what's there is great as well. The music that kicks in during combat is as good as Andrew's work always is, I just sometimes wished there was more of it. It can sometimes feel a bit stale with the music kicking up again or lingering before going back to silence. It works with the shorter level design, but perhaps a few more triggers could get some music playing (like challenge room music for example). The sound of the weapons is mostly pretty good, with a few maybe being weak... But who am I to judge what a Gem Staff would sound like for real? I can't really sum up the gameplay beyond telling you to play it! It plays wonderfully with an amazing selection of weapons that all feel as they should. The upgrade system is refreshing an unique, and the perks all feel as if they have a use. For me performance was fine albeit one area with the graphics cranked to max; most of the game ran fine with them way up though! Overall I can't recommend Nightmare Reaper enough... It's too unique to be ignored!

Will haunt you while you sleep

I am honest, I did not expect much. The graphics looked too flashy, although I really like retro shooting games. But this game has a rather addictive loop, the loot is amazing, the RNG levels always feel fresh and the horror atmosphere is a nice touch. Really I have played this game for days straight and it continued in my dreams. Can highly recommend this experience, even as early access, for anyone who likes retro shooting, loot and/or Andrew Hulshult.

I've got a fever... more Retro Fps

Just outstanding... amazing blend of retro graphics, vicious and addictive gameplay mixing old and new gameplay concepts, superb soundtrack that flows as the gameplay escalates. this is way better than most os modern AAA shooters, just like almost every concept of the and based on the 80's and 90's.
