Version: 1.1.0
Played on: Windows 10
In theory you have two separate versions: Arcade and Expert, but the second one is unplayable.
Arcade:
If you set the resolution in the game settings too high, the game may hang a few seconds after the race starts. But 1024x768x32 worked like a charm for me.
Expert:
Regardless of the settings, the game menu runs below 15 FPS, and even if you start a new race, the game will crash immediately after loading.
This game has two modes, which are essentially two different games (with different menus even): "Arcade" and "Expert".
"Arcade" works (even in resolutions as high as 1920x1080 at 32bit) if you go to "Setup" and disable the "Software engine" checkbox. I don't know why GOG decided to use a DirectX wrapper (dgVoodoo) and then enable the use of the game's internal software renderer, but fortunately, you can disable it.
"Expert" flat-out doesn't work. I can't even get through the menus, I tried with and without "Software engine" and even 640x480 resolution at 16-bit, it just doesn't work. Which is a shame, because "Expert" has the game's career mode. There is a "patch-1-0-4a" out there, but apparently, the GOG release has it pre-applied, so it has no effect.
I guess there is a reason this game was a bargain bin special from launch, but I expected GOG to either apply compatibility fixes or warn us about the fact that more than half the game doesn't work.
to all ppl who have crashes, just make sure the color depth is 16-bit, and if you have gpu you can switch off the software renderer; both with/wthout software renderer work fine on my machine, and im able to achieve 240fps (vsync).
not sure if it matters, but i use my admin account for this game.
everything just works, both standard/expert and arcade modes. (*)
tested with few resolution upto 2560x1440 (2k), but hud elements dont scale e.g. mirror, so highest res i recommend is 1024x768 (xga), but a lower res such as 800x600 (svga) works best for my taste.
(*) played std/expert for 1 hour without crashes, however at extreme rare conditions and only when aborting current training or race it can trigger a crash. the crash upon aborting race is random with very low probability of crashing, even aborting 10 times wasnt enough for me to trigger it.
p.s. i first played nice2 in 2000 (on vga res), including nice1, greatest racing game i have ever seen on pc.
I think N.I.C.E. 2 (aka, 'Breakneck') is a very good game for it's time. I had thought of playing it again more than once lately, and wondered about buying something else 'old' on GOG here that I still have on disk or file: I am very pleased with this version. And to those who complained that the 'Expert' application of the game does not work, I don't like this either but it never did work since release: I have the original CD, and exception errors were already there; even included troubleshooting in the original readme detailed these, with no help but "update your graphic drivers". Lol. And as soon as I would click on 'Championship Game' in Expert it always jumped to highlight 'just for fun'; I think it is only for a multiplayer mode I've never set up or played, not what most would call 'Career Mode'. It has an Arcade Game option in Arcade that's more like a career mode; one can win and gain rank. However this may be, it IS the game being sold here; no different, or worse, or better, than the original when it was released. And, since Windows XP at least, when I first owned the game, there's no music. And there appear to be no music files on the orginal cd; I would also appreciate mainly THIS not to be true.
It otherwise plays well: hard to win at normal difficulty, but looks great for it's time in 'generic directx' through dgvoodoo's included settings in the root folder. I'm enjoying playing this again, as I have over the years: I give it four stars, mainly because it never had a music soundtrack -- but also at least not a BAD soundtrack, which is WORSE! Lol... I'm playing this on a Win 10 i5, with a nvidia gt1050 display and joystick: If you liked the Need For Speed III era, you should like this -- it has replays, early damage modeling and environmental effects, and no glitches. I point my shortcut to the 'n2_ arc' program after setup in the launcher, and everything works FINE: Tweak a LITTLE, and ENJOY! :-)
