Perfect for what it is
Almost nine years after the original release of this game, the Kickstarter promise of a DRM free version is finally fulfilled. Congratulations, ASH, slow clap. Better late than never. And what a brilliant little aventure game this turned out to be. Animation and dialog is mostly the work of one man with a bright red mane and no eyebrows to speak of, so you probably won't spend a two digit number of hours on the game. But all of the crucial aspects turned out fantastic. The dialog is very witty, extremely original and strictly limits Monkey Island references to a total of two (the respective character is banned from the scene and never seen again). Another gold medal goes to background design. The art itself is sometimes a little basic, but you really get the feeling that these backgrounds were crafted with an adventure game in mind. The Fowl Fleet also excels in puzzle design – instead of forcing you to walk back and forth between a lot of screens, most of the puzzles can be solved within two or three screens. And a good deal of puzzles can be solved within the same screen, which might seem oddly counterintuitive to the hardcore adventure gamer crowd. We could argue whether the music is a little too repetitive or the bobblehead characters could be better designed, but that would be a foul feat for the Fowl Fleet. This is a meticulously planned, lovingly and artfully crafted adventure game on a hamstring budget. It's frankly perfect. Sometimes I lie awake at night wishing we had more of those.
